I'm using this to create a desk out of a small sofa table. It's the only one I found that can accommodate an apron under the top. The top being two pieces doesn't affect my use (keyboard and mouse) and the two pieces line up seamlessly. Plus, there are two metal bars that secure the two pieces together. An electric screwdriver is your friend on this one. Quick and easy assembly. Product is secure and folds down/lifts up with ease. I have used it for several months with no issues. I do not think that this is intended to bear a lot of weight especially when not anchored directly to a desk top. I wouldn't want it up permanently holding my printer. Note: You need a standard Philips screwdriver to assemble this (not included). The first thing I noticed about opening up this tightly taped-shut box was that it smelled -strongly- of old mold and mildew, and the paper inside was rippled as if it had gotten wet and dried. There wasn't any discoloration, however. The weather here had been dry so, at a guess, this was a warehouse or storage issue, but it was pungent enough that I wiped down both the desk extender and my workspace with disinfecting wipes during and after assembly. As for the desk extender itself is appears to be REALLY sturdy. Both the pressboard shelf and the metal c-clamps are heavy, and it allows for a decently sized thickness of desk, too which means it can get over that decorative lip that you find on many desks, or perhaps work on a kitchen counter. It's practical that it has two of those large clamps, too, which means it can be anchored solidly but still moved at a later time. Both of the interior sides of the c-clamps have a bit of foam cushioning to prevent scoring the desk surface but be wary of overtightening or that foam won't do you any good. In practice, there is one quality that is both good and bad. In order to collapse the shelf again, after extending it, you need to press upward on both of the levers on the L-bracket supporting the extender. This is easy to do, and it has a light touch. By the same token, depending upon where you place the extender, you can also hit this accidentally with your leg or knee while you're sitting at your desk. This isn't such an issue since you normally need to press -both- levers to collapse the shelf but it may be a thing to watch out for if you're working in tight spaces or place the extender where you may naturally bump it. It does not feel as if it could collapse on its own simply by putting weight on it or pressing down from above. It's a good option for writing or computer desks without a pull-out shelf for writing documents on, like you'd normally find on a full-fledged office desk. I, myself, got this in anticipation of the holiday season that's already starting: this is going into the kitchen to give me some additional workspace that I can move around while cooking and baking! It may seem like it has a small footprint but, let me tell you, every square inch of space counts!!! If I can set up even one more chopping station, place for a pan to cool, or a temporary spot to set a mixing bowl while I stir something together, that's one less headache -- and gives me a way to rest my arms! It sits nice and level, and anchors firmly enough that I can put a bowl with a whole batch of cookie dough on it. What isn't to love about that??? ... show more
