Description

Ergon took it upon themselves to focus on all kinds of persistent seating problems in mountain biking. Based on the the great success of the SM saddle series now come additonal models for 2020 - further refined for even more comfort. The orthopedic foam is thicker, softer and creates a large contact area. Features a flat seat for dynamic sitting in different postitions without tilting effects. In typical Ergon fashion there are gender specific versions of the new SMC saddles, each one anatomically designed for fitting male and female riders. Womens typically ride with high pressure in the genital area, which is exactly where the specific relief channel makes things right. In the male specific model the pronounced, rearward postitioned relfief channel provided maximum relief in the sensitive perineal area.

  • Best saddle I've ever used
Color: Black Size: medium/large(38-44)
69 y.o., 6'2", 225 lbs., 140mm sit bones. I've been through a LOT of saddles: Fizik, Specialized, Bontrager, Brooks, Rivet, SMP, SQ labs, WTB, Selle Anatomica, Fabric . . . and probably others I've forgotten. There were saddles that were instantly wrong, and others that seemed promising but got uncomfortable after an hour or more of riding. And, over the decade that I've been riding more seriously, my body has changed. I'm lighter, which is a good thing except that there's less cushion in my posterior. That is also a consequence of aging, along with more sensitivity back there. As a result, I've found that saddles that used to seem pretty ideal -- like the Specialized Power -- now don't have enough cushioning for my bonier butt. A year ago I landed -- figuratively and literally -- on Ergon saddles. Both the SR and the SM instantly felt more comfortable than anything else I had tried. They have a somewhat unusual shape -- flat and wide with a generous relief channel down the middle of the saddle. I could have lived with either, but ordered the SMC in the hope it would be just the little bit softer I wanted. Voila! It's the first combination of right shape -- including a generous 160mm width -- and cushion that I'd been searching for. Unlike a short nose saddle (like the Power), it's long enough to move around on for relief. Three hour rides -- my longest so far -- don't leave me in discomfort. The saddle never "disappears" -- I no longer believe such a thing happens. But my tail never complains, and that's more than good enough for me. Let me finish with my discovery of why leather saddles like the Rivet, Brooks B17, and Selle Anatomica didn't work for me. All of them are around 175mm wide, which theoretically should work for my 140mm sit bones. With all of them, I never felt like they broke in. Finally I turned the B17 over and measured the distance between the horns of the cantle -- the metal bracket to which the leather is riveted. It turned out to be about 125mm. The SA and Rivet are about the same. They never broke in for me because I was literally sitting on the frame. I really, really wanted to like all those saddles, and read many rapturous testimonies to their comfort. My bet is that all those leather freaks have skinnier butts than mine. The SMC -- and pretty much all modern saddles -- eliminate the frame for a more monocoque construction. So, if you're a widebody like me, caveat emptor. ... show more

  • I hope my review can help other mtb riders
Color: Black Size: small/medium/men's 3.5-7.5/women's 5-9
I'm 5.9ft height (1.76m) and weight 174lb (79kg) and ride mtb trail (20 miles average per ride). During the last six years, I have owned the following saddles: WTB (Pure, Silverado and Rocket), SDG (Duster, Bel Air)... These all are great saddles, however at the end of every ride, somehow I've ended with minor bottom sore, chafing or discomfort. At the beginning, I thought it was my padded chamois, so I also kept changing brands and using different chamois creams or powder... After many different combinations, I decided to give it a try to an Ergon saddle... I didn't do it before because I thought their "square shape" and flat profile (visually less padded and rounded than my other saddles) wouldn't be the best option for me... But I was sooooooo mistaken... After visiting the saddle selection tool at Ergon website, I got the Ergon SMC small/medium foam saddle and tested it on my hardtail bike as benchmark... What a difference since the first minutes !!! and how great after a 20 mile ride!!! I was really amazed... ZERO sore, chaffing or discomfort. Loved its inner channel and how eliminated groin discomfort when climbing. My other saddles also have this channel but not as pronounced as in the Ergon. If that happened with my hardtail, then I wanted to try it out on my full suspension bike... Even better!!!. And my guess is that the Ergon SMC gel or core are even more comfortable... but for me, the SMC foam is just enough to totally forget about the saddle and enjoy my ride. I'm fully aware that a saddle is a total personal preference and depends on your bike discipline, milage, body shape and weight, etc. But if someone is searching for a different alternative to saddle discomfort, I would definitely recommend the Ergon SMC. I hope this review can help other riders... Enjoy the outdoors!!! ... show more

  • Most comfortable saddle I have owned!
Color: Black Size: medium/large(38-44)
I have ridden MTB for years, but never really paid attention to "proper fit" for things like a saddle. I was replacing the stock Marin saddle that came with my Marin Rift Zone 2, which was never super comfortable as it seemed skinny, and I didnt like the way the sides dropped off. I measured my sit bones (as best I could), and read numerous reviews and "best of" lists. It was between a name I knew WTB, and this one. I took a chance, and was rewarded. When I received this one, I was a bit skeptical as it didn't seem much wider than the one I was replacing. But after mounting this, and riding it is super comfortable, and unobtrusive! The shape, the jewel canal, and padding make for a super comfortable all day saddle. I liken it to the first time I sat in a German car. The seats seemed stiff, but they were actually supportive. One of the best investments I have made for this bike so far! ... show more
