  • Excellent Keyboard, Meh Software
Size: Epomaker Flamingo Switch Color: RT100 Pink
One thing that i wish i knew was if the miniTV could display multiple gifs (since there is a key combination that literally says "Switch images") but it turns out that only 1 gif and the epomaker logo can be shown so yeah. The keyboard is good, nice sound, got the one with flamingo switches and it feels amazing. The only problem i could find about the keyboard is not with the keyboard, but with the software, its half-baked, if i set it to start as an admin on windows startup (or even within the software) it just doesnt start, i always have to manually start it up so i can finally get my weather temperature to show, but then, if i want my cpu usage to also show up, i have to manually synchronize it, the software can bug out from time to time if i connect the cable while the 2.4 Ghz mode is still active. Luckily these things can be sorted out with updates. ... show more

  • Great keyboard for the money, but software/screen still beta level
Size: Gateron Pro Yellow Color: RT100 Retro
I wrote a review that never showed up here, so I wanted to try to leave another. For perspective, I’ve bought about 20 different mechanical keyboards in the past decade, ranging from $40 to over $400, and I also enjoy collecting keycap sets at various price points. I’m not an elite hobbyist, but more of a hard core casual. For the money, I think this is overall a great keyboard, especially when considering the various features (lubed stabilizers and switches, gasket mounting, sound dampening, hot swap, tri-mode, dust cover, coordinating cable), and the addition of the screen. This could have been a five star keyboard, but some questionable decisions, and the beta quality of the screen functioning, cost it star. The “smart” screen is the feature that pushed me to buy this keyboard despite the bland retro colors, and I have no regrets. I also didn’t have an “1800” layout keyboard yet, so it made a nice addition to my collection. The footprint is larger than I generally prefer (65% or even 68% keyboards are my sweet spot between too small and too big), but it’s sometimes nice to have a full number pad, and this saves at least some space vs. a standard, full-sized keyboard. I started using computers in elementary school in the late 1970s, so I am completely over “computer beige”. Thankfully, I have a colorful, retro, PimpMyKeyboard.com (Signature Plastics) 1976 SA Row 3 keycap set, so I knew I could put this board to good use (highly recommend the set!). I was able to make the non-standard layout work with my original 1976 keycap “kits”, but went back and ordered the novelty keycap pack, so I could do so more attractively. If you shop for keycaps, you’ll want to make sure there is support for the smaller, non-standard 1.75u right shift and 1u Ctrl, Alt and Fn keys. Thankfully, all but the most basic sets should, these days. I prefer aluminum cases for my keyboards, but don’t mind the plastic used for the RT100. It feels like a solid keyboard overall, and it is a DREAM to type on. Given the wireless nature of the keyboard, aluminum would also make it weigh a ton! I bought mine with Gateron Pro Yellow switches, and it’s smooth as butter to type on the RT100 with them. The keyboard also SOUNDS amazing, possessing a quiet thockiness, both with the stock keycaps, and with the row 3 SA keycaps I replaced them with. DO be aware that the stems on the stock keycaps are very tight. Removing the keycaps, no matter how carefully, usually also pulled out the switch. The Gateron Pro Yellow switches used are 3-pin, not 5-pin, so it may not be as much of an issue with 5-pin switches. I was careful to pull straight up, and none of the switch pins were damaged, so it was simply a matter of re-inserting them. If you were planning on swapping out the switches anyway (I actually LOVE Gateron Pro Yellows in their various iterations) this may be more of a feature than a bug. Be aware that upon arrival, you may need to remove the space bar and re-insert the sound dampening rubber underneath, as it had worked loose from their slots on mine. I actually had to fiddle with it twice before it was correctly installed (and my space bar was operating properly), but it’s been fine, since. Note that it’s always a good idea to use one of the many free keyboard testing websites to check all the keys on a new keyboard, straight out of the box. My Mini Cat 64 (also sold here, and a fun little keyboard!) actually had a space bar “stabilizer insert” placed into the housing backwards, requiring me to dismantle and reassemble it properly; with limited return windows, it’s good to rule out any potential issues asap so you have time to troubleshoot, and if necessary, return or replace. As for the stock keycaps, they’re actually quite decent. If I hadn’t already had my own set lined up for use, I would have happily left them. The legends were crisp in my set, I enjoyed the look and feel of the profile and smooth texture (ymmv), they went great with the keyboard’s neutral retro-yet-playful theme, and typing sounded great with them installed. The plug-in mini “smart” monitor is unfortunately NOT very smart. Every time I boot my PC, I have to re-launch the keyboard software and repeat the awkward process to make the CPU feature work. I was *completely* unable to get the temperature feature working (and have not seen it working in ANY review) despite following the instructions several different times. I’m also not a fan of the time being 24 hour instead of 12 - which cannot be altered - but thankfully, I primarily care about the ability to display images. In that, it shines. I have played around and installed some pretty hefty animated GIF files (some comprised of over 120 different images!), and while it took a few minutes to load them onto the device, they worked flawlessly. Unlike the CPU feature, it thankfully persists between power ups. I hope Epomaker continues to improve the functionality of the screen software, including the ability to move, hide or edit the clock, temperature and CPU frames as desired. I would really love to make my animated GIF files take up the entire screen. Perhaps they could make it so pressing a function key shows a second screen, with the informational data, including battery/power status. I’ve used this keyboard mostly wired, but also used the 2.4 Ghz wireless feature to connect to a secondary PC, as well as Bluetooth for my phone. The initial connection was trouble-free, and swapping over is pretty much instant. As with any wireless keyboard, battery life will be heavily affected by RGB lighting, but I haven’t done any testing to report on how long things last with or without RGB lighting on, or with/without the smart monitor attached and running. It’s disappointing that using the screen doohickey leaves you with nowhere to store the wireless dongle or the cover for it. I stuck the dongle in my secondary PC, and the cover is stored in the keyboard box, but there really should have been a dedicated spot. The media knob is great. I love that any RGB themes also shine through it, in a unique touch. The keyboard has two different pullouts at the bottom back of the keyboard to adjust the rear height. Ergonomically, it’s generally NOT good to use those, and I don’t. One thing I’ve noticed is that the keyboard in general is particularly tall, and typical wrist rests aren’t high enough, so you’ll want to take measurements before buying a wrist rest. ... show more

  • Different screen?
Size: Sea Salt Silent Switch Color: RT100 Retro
The seasalt switches are soft and easy to type on. It works with the Ranked Coiled Cable i bought for it. The software isn't complicated, but it is slow. you can download other peoples' gifs, which makes It feel like a little community in there. Overall, its a fun keyboard, and i like fun but I had to order 2, because the knob didn't work. It works now, and i got a different monitor to go with it? This one has glare and some extra bezel. I thought it died on me after a firmware update, but it fixed itself with another repeated firmware update. iffy quality control, but a 5/5 when its all behaving. very creative and stylish.
