  • The Eluktronics Covert Max-17 is the best computer device I have ever used.
I just recently received my Eluktronics Covert Max-17 laptop a couple days ago (Tues 6/2). I have used many desktop computers in my life; from pre-built, custom built by a company, and custom built by myself. I have also owned many powerful laptops from the likes of Dell (Alienware), Acer (Helios), and MSI. This laptop has become the best PC I have ever owned, hands down. The company that manufacturers it, Eluktronics, have already proven to be superior to me when it comes to customer service with the few things I have needed (question regarding BIOS, ordering an additional power brick), as they took care of everything quickly and professionally. But that means nothing if the laptop itself does not back that up. But it does, in a big way. Before continuing, please note I am not super knowledgeable at many things such as undervolting, overclocking, etc. I followed guides for most of these things. Before purchasing, I had three major concerns that I was hopeful would not be an issue with this laptop, in no particular order: 1. Thermals / temperatures affecting performance / throttling 2. Loud fans during gameplay / activities affecting sound performance from speakers 3. Ability to perform outside of gaming [Office Mode, work tasks, intensive hobby tasks, etc] Here is my full [and long] review of my incredible Max-17. I’m going to try to cover everything and will do my best to answer any questions. Specs: CPU: i7-10875h GPU: RTX 2080 Super Max-Q RAM: 64 GB 2933 Mhz (Overkill for gaming, sure. But I need this much RAM for my work and intensive tasks/hobbies. Plus I won’t complain about the extra couple of frames this gives me.) HD: 2TB (Dual 1TB) PCIe NVME SSD Note: I have a laptop cooling pad I use at home when gaming. First Impressions / Basic Information: Upon opening the box which came nicely packaged, I was surprised by the light weight. It’s listed on their website as the “lightest 17-inch laptop”, but you don’t really understand it until you hold it yourself. I passed it over to my wife and even she was like “Wow that’s really light.” She’s comparing it to her iPad and old Dell laptop which is smaller and weighs more. I loved that I was able to open the lid with one hand without lifting the bottom at all. The look/aesthetics is exactly what I was expecting – and I love it. It’s completely matte-black all the way around, giving it a sleek, professional look. While I certainly use it for gaming, I needed something that isn’t super flashy with gamer lights/markings while at work, but also has some style. This certainly is the best of both worlds. I haven’t used the included Black Swarm sticker, although it’s nice. The screen is smooth as butter and everything is vibrant and colorful. I’ve watched a movie, multiple Youtube videos, and played a bunch of games. This screen is top-notch and the 240 refresh rate is fantastic. 100% brightness is too bright for me, I keep it at 80-90% or so while gaming/plugged in and around 30-40% when unplugged. The sound is good but not great. I’m sure I could tweak it for better performance but I use headphones when gaming and nothing I do on the speakers require anything they can’t handle. I have yet to need to crank the volume up to 100% for any task I’ve done. I also keep them off generally at work. The keyboard is excellent – the keys are smooth and quiet. While it has plenty of options in the included Eluktronics Control Center for changing color/style, I keep it simple. I have the entire keyboard set to dark blue while it’s plugged in and color off while I’m on battery. One thing I noticed too is the lack of fingerprints on the keyboard and chassis. I am a fingerprint magnet. My phone, smartwatch, even my mouse has fingerprints immediately after I use them. Somehow the chassis/keyboard does not leave my prints all over. I will admit after the 3rd day I noticed a little on the spacebar and other keys but easily cleaned it with a cloth. I can’t comment much on the trackpad as I have only used it thus far with a wireless mouse. I am leaving the plastic cover on the trackpad until it comes off on its own to protect and keep it clean. However, the trackpad surprisingly does work through the plastic cover if needed. I tested it once and everything function tried worked fine, except the double-tap to turn it off. I’m guessing I need to remove the cover for that to work. I also want to comment on the webcam. First off, I think for someone who plans on using it for Skype or whatever would probably dislike the location. It’s in an awkward spot and I have to duck down/lean back in order to be in its line of sight. Now with that said, I love that it’s hidden down below the screen because I disable/cover it anyway. So for me, having it tucked and hidden out of sight is a huge plus. I have yet to use the Thunderbolt 3 port and I will be utilizing it often, which I’m extremely pleased to have. I like that it’s on the back of the laptop, along with the power, HDMI, and LAN ports. The front LED-lights are cool but hardly noticeable for me, so I have them disabled as well. The loading speeds in which anything and everything appears is nearly instant. From shutdown to being in a game takes under 1 minute because it loads so quickly. Browsers, office files, images, videos all load so fast it just blows my mind. Prior to using the laptop, the fan sound/volume was a concern as I have read from reviews that they can get very loud. After running a game in “Beast Mode” with fan boost enabled, my mind was quickly put to ease. They do crank up nicely, but not nearly as loud as I expected. My previous laptop was louder. It also pushes an extraordinary amount of warm air out of the vents, which is what you want for better thermal performance. Truth is, I’ve had excellent performance in all games in Game Mode without fan boost enabled. With this setting, the fans are so quiet you wouldn’t even know they’re running half the time. Undervolting CPU: [EDITED 6/16/20]: You do NOT need to use Afterburner to undervolt/overclock the GPU - it can negatively affect your Eluktroboost. After the initial setup, Windows loaded and the Eluktronics logo appeared as the background. I immediately restarted and went into BIOS to check the undervolt. I found that -.80mv was the safest undervolt during all testing / gaming. Battery Life: [EDITED: 6/16/20]: Apparently having Afterburner run at startup and sitting in the background was draining an extreme amount of battery. I still have Rivatuner running and I'm getting 8+ hours without a charge at work. If I let it sit idle, it shows upwards of 12 hours. The battery life on this laptop is AMAZING!!! Just don't let any background apps run that drain it and you're golden. The only real negative is that it does take awhile to charge back to 100%. I’m fine with that as I always plug it in when it’s low or when I’m gaming. An idea of how long it takes: I discharged it down to about 10% battery and plugged it in. The initial time it gave me until full charge was close to 4 hours. This is longer than the amount of battery time it gave me for use. Benchmarks: Cinebench R20 Results [Approx average of 3 attempts]: Office Mode w/ ECO on: 2370 Office Mode w/ ECO off: 2800 Gaming Mode [fan boost off]: 3200 Gaming Mode [w/ Fan Boost]: 3230 Beast Mode [fan boost off]: 4350 Beast Mode [w/ Fan Boost]: 4400 Unigine Superposition [One attempt]: 1080p Medium: 16943 1080p High: 13496 1080p Extreme: 6031 3DMark Time Spy [One attempt]: Total Score: 9238 Graphics Score: 9126 CPU Score: 9929 3DMark Fire Strike [One attempt]: Total Score: 20608 Graphics Score: 24827 Physics Score: 21722 Combined Score: 8764 In-game FPS: I wasn’t using any software to monitor it exactly. I’m mostly going off what I’m seeing from what MSI Afterburner/RivaTurner is displaying. However here are the results: League of Legends: 240 average (Game Mode) CoD: Warzone: 120-140 (Game Mode) Half-Life: Alyx: 80 average? Was hard to check consistently as I was in VR. (Game Mode) [Never once in any game did I notice any lag or throttling. Keep in mind I am playing in Game Mode with fan boost off, not Beast Mode. I wanted to keep the temps down and see if it can still handle pushing out some performance. It did that beyond my expectation.] Thermals / Temperatures: I am extremely impressed so far with CPU / GPU Temps while gaming. Before starting anything up, I went into Power Options and into the Advanced settings. I went to Processor Power Management -> Maximum Processor State and changed it from 100% to 99%. I did not lower frequencies/touch anything in Throttlestop. I set the mode to “Game Mode” (fan boost off) for all three games when pulling these temps: League of Legends: 55-60C GPU, 65-70C CPU CoD: Warzone: 60-65C GPU, 70-75 CPU Half-Life: Alyx: 70-75 GPU, 70-75C CPU No matter what I played, no matter how long, the laptop remained extremely cool the entire time. Since my previous laptop would routinely go 95C+ during load and often throttle, I am seriously impressed by the thermals on the Max-17. HWInfo64 claims a few times during CoD: Warzone the CPU cores got up to 80C but I never saw that. Average was always around 70-75C. [Just for the sake of testing, I played CoD: Warzone in Beast Mode with fan boost on to check performance / thermals for about an hour. While it did boost the FPS quite a bit (can’t remember exactly, but I believe up to a steady 150-160 FPS?) the temps of the CPU went between to 85-92C. It never throttled for me, but HWInfo64 claims it did and showed a max of 94C on a few cores. For laptop longevity, I wouldn’t feel comfortable running those settings long term.] Final Thoughts Eluktronics makes an incredible laptop in the Max-17. I have never been happier with a computer and believe it was worth every penny. I highly recommend considering the Max-17 due to its aesthetics (size for thermals/vibrant 244Hz screen/physical looks), portability (lightweight, battery life on the go, thin size), and performance (gaming, general tasks). But it’s all the additional little things, such as having a TB3, supreme cooling options, modes for extra wattage to CPU/GPU for higher performance, and Eluktronics top-of-the-line support that I believe you can’t go wrong. Please feel free to ask me any questions. ... show more

  • Great for Linux Gaming!
If you are looking for a powerful laptop that can run Linux out of the box, I highly recommend one of these. I received it 2 weeks ago and the first thing I did was install Pop_OS on the 512gb drive it came with. Once setup, I installed rEFInd and then added my 2TB drive and did a fresh Win10 install. The entire process was a breeze. I used the Nvidia ISO that System 76 has available and it ran right perfect right out the box. I'm able to switch between the Intel and Nvidia GPU on the fly or use it in hybrid mode. I haven't run through a full battery test with the different modes, but on Balanced power with the Nvidia GPU and the screen at 50%, I got about 3.5 hours of usage. This was browsing the web and watching Youtube videos and playing some Hypnospace Outlaw which is not a high demand game. I'm sure if I had it on the iGPU and in low power mode I could get an hour or more out of it. In regards to Linux gaming, it can handle everything you throw at it. I mainly use Windows for gaming, but it's getting to the point where I may not need to for much longer. I've been playing the Witcher 3 at Ultra via Proton and averaging FPS's in the low 90's. ... show more

  • Absolutely Amazing
I'm huge fan of gaming laptops. I'm constantly researching about them and stuff. i pick up this baby 3 days ago and OMG this thing is amazing. Since this is a gaming laptop lets get the essential out of the way; This absolutely destroy any game that dare to even look at it. The best part is that the cooling solution is so good. if u rank up electroboost you are going to encounter a bit of thermal throttled on games like dota 2 and overwatch and anything that is keeping the gpu at 30 percent usage. I found that using gaming mode for those games instead gave me gigantic frames without any hiccups. as for anything game that does use the gpu for more than 50 percent of its capability, eluktroboost is ridiculously powerful. As for the rest of what makes it a laptop. Screen is very good, specially since it is an Ips display and 144, plus very good color accuracy from factory. Keyboard is decent, it does take a bit of time to get used to it but once u do it feels good to type on (rgb with it is pretty good, plus), plus i like that the keys are big so u don't press multiple keys at once. One of my favorite parts of this laptop is it super battery life. like i say I'm a big fan of gaming laptops and almost every single one that i owned will last me 1 hour alive. this thing going on for 7 to 9 hours like nothing, is mind blowing at least from my experience.,( the max 17 version is the one that im referring btw since i know the max 15 battery is much smaller). the charging box is actually smaller than anything i also own, in case that matters to some people that want to save a bit more space in their bags. The button that cycles through the power modes in the chassis is pretty useful and instant. pretty nice nvme with a very easy access for panel removal in case u want to upgrade, literally just take the screws out and the panel comes out on its own. Amazing build quality and slick design, almost weightless and pretty thing as well. love that mine came without any logos or anything of the sort, one even gets the I7/gpu stickers on a separate little bag. The little Criticism so far that i have for it: whenever i close the laptop with the lid and i pick up the lid back up, it takes more than what im used to for the screen to turn on, not sure why. the speaker and overall sound quality is pretty good but the volume of it can be a little underwhelming at least in my opinion. Amazing laptop through and through, specially for the price and if you include the bundle the deal is a steal. ... show more
