This is an EXCEPTIONAL product. i have yet to take good pictures but those will be up in the next few days while the whole system gets settled into its new location. Pros: Seemingly aircraft caliber aluminum construction frame built like a tank VERY nice attention to detail Easy installation Breathtaking "floating" screen appearance, with or without the included diffusion velvet. KILLER customer service Cons: Although on the lowest end of the ALR spectrum, it is still a considerable cost when you can buy a lower end 4k LCD with HDR at 40-49 inches for the same cost. this is just a screen. literally, a screen. its 100+ inches (102 if you don't use the included velvet) but its still a glorified screen. This is an outstanding product. I buy from online and in person retailers all the time. I would even consider myself somewhat of a tech junkie, though my budgets keep my habits somewhat in the realm of affordability. This screen performs exceptionally in every area i hoped it would, and then some. The box arrived at my home in typical amazon "how the heck did they get it here so fast?!" fashion. excited i took it up to the media room and did a quick inventory check. Immediately i noticed several things. First was the actual box. other than it being brown, this is by far the nicest box and packaging for a shipped item this large i have ever seen, even the mailman mentioned it "man this feels like a solid box here". He was spot on. the packaging is so well thought out, you would have to go through 3-4 layers of cardboard to even get to anything actually inside the box which is important when dealing with a product that is ruined by any punctures or damage whatsoever. After the box was opened (very easily i might add) i pulled out the two individual "boxes" inside and the accessories boxes as well. one has the tape, one had the right angle attaching rails and one had tools. About those tools...i don't know what made them decide to do it, but these are the nicest tools i have ever received to use with a product. i have never in my life received tools with a product that made me think "ohh I'm keeping and using this screw driver after this". this product did that. they also give you a small mallet that comes in handy and it too is of such good quality it wont just go back into the box and never be touched again, "im'a use that sucker". the material itself looks to be very high quality aluminum. i have absolutely no doubt the frame will last forever. everything that was supposed to be there was in fact there. I opened the manual to see if i needed to do anything different than the very obvious when putting it together and I'm pleased that the answer was "nope". The manual was easily understood and had a clear English section however, in case you couldn't figure any part out. the only thing i could see that would even throw anyone off would be the center support beam. Something to note, as it is installed with its top and bottom hole attached to a different kind of screw then the rest of the unit. it has a head that goes inside the inner rail on the backside of the screen. If i didn't look in the instructions, i might think it was missing something needed to install it, so if your reading this just take note of that, i read several reviews of people knocking down a star because the center support beam "didn't fit". i honestly think there's a more than good chance half of those people (prob all of them honestly) just didn't read how to actually install that section in the manual that is clearly shown. the screen attaches around the frame via Velcro. As a drummer i noticed the attachment pattern was very similar to that of a drum head, you always tighten the opposite side first and move around the frame in a pattern to easily and even tightened the screen around the back. I noticed that many of the high end companies that sell similar screens tend to attach the screen to the frame with eyelets. either snap in, or tension band attachment. for those of you concerned about the Velcro, i wouldn't be, "this sucker ain't goin' no where". Once its attached. and after thinking about it, Velcro is the obvious choice because if the screen de-tensions over time, re tension of the screen is easily done here...MUCH harder if the screen had attachment holes in the actual screen material, so i say "great choice". The wall mounts are more than adequate and come with screws for both going into a wall stud, or going into drywall safely. The screen rests on the wall mounts in a channel at the top of the frames back, so once its up, it can easily slide left and right for finer tuning placement in those directions, sorry but no up and down adjustment, in my opinion though that adjustment is completely unneeded. The screen itself took a little time to get perfect when attaching it to the frame, but no more than expected really. Once on the wall you realize "DANG, that is a BIG screen". the room i put it in is about 16 by 25 but you cant appreciate how huge a screen that's nearly 8 feet wide or bigger is until you are actually physically looking at it. I'm totally convinced that if these ALR screens were more commercially marketed with mid level projectors, that they would actually out sell regular televisions, even 4k models. for right around two grand US, you can truly achieve a mind blowing picture at an even more mind blowing size. Pairing my screen (ALR cinegrey 3d) with the Epson 3500 in a somewhat well lit room with a pretty standard ambient day room light almost made me pee myself. i was hoping beyond hope that the projector technology had improved from what i had seen years ago and would look acceptable in a somewhat well lit room (pictures to follow in the next few days)...it isn't just acceptable, it is absolutely fantastic, and envy inducing to anyone that doesn't have this kind of setup that sees it and likes "big". when the lights lower, and at night, it is breathtaking. i actually use this as my main computer monitor and i am more than pleased to say it looks better than my "old" 65 inch led. I can tell you too, that it isn't just the solid projector I'm using designed for rooms with more ambient light, but the screen as well. in fact, i would give a heavier visual "WOW" to the screen than i would to the actual projector which is outstanding too. What you have in the end is an absolute no brainer buy for anyone who is looking for a fixed frame projector screen. is the black diamond better? the high end Draper better? only until you compare cost to the elite screens, then those screens go from being slightly visually better to being WAY, WAY worse because they are thousands more. I am using a Ultra Short Throw (UST) Epson LS500 with this screen and I have never seen a picture this good. The instructions are very lame and could use a lot of improvements. For $1000, instructions could be better laid out. Example, there is a mallet to use for the center bar. Now depending on which Elite instructions you follow, this mallet might not be necessary. The instructions that come with this says that you install the center bar prior to attaching the screen to the frame. If you go about this way, then there is absolutely no need for the mallet. However if you look up the instructions on their website, then you install the screen first, then install the center bar which will require the use of the mallet. Go figure. There are 2 different types of springs used. You attach the screen to the frame via one type of spring and another spring you attach the small black border frame. Not a bad concept. However a couple of things. First the frame should be marked as to where the spring should be affixed to. The springs are cheap. They have to be stretched to connect the screen and if you disconnect the spring, it does not coil back. It is permanently stretched. Cheap. So if for some reason when you have the screen assembled and it is not laid out correctly to the frame, then the only recourse is to disassemble and then reassemble. If this is needed to fix the screen layout, then all of your springs are stretched for reassembly. Again Cheap. There is a 2nd set of springs which is for the small outer black frame and these springs hook up to a different area in the main frame. Again, this should be marked on the frame as to where it is to be attached. Again, this is a $1000 screen. Hanging the screen. You are practically on your own here. In Epson's case, there is a package - screen and projector together. From their website you can download a PDF to a computer or laptop and then project this file on the wall for alignment and placement of the wall brackets. Nice. This is fine for a Epson screen but for a aftermarket screen, the layout for the brackets are incorrect. This should be provided by the manufacturer of the aftermarket screen company. A simple PDF for bracket placement would simplify things greatly. It is like you hang the screen and then you put the projector where it needs to be to fit the screen. Everyone will have a table for the projector and each table will be a different height, not much but different. When you move the projector in or out to enlarge the display to fit the screen, the display on the wall will also go either up or down as you enlarge it or make it smaller depending on which way you move the projector (in or out). PROS 2 pairs of gloves are provided. It is a 2 person job to hang the screen. Beautiful picture display. HDR is greatly benefited by this display. Packaging was very good. CONS 2 pairs of gloves are needed. They stress how delicate this screen is and that gloves are needed to handle. This is just sad. What happens say 1 year or maybe 2 years go by? Does the quality of the screen display go down? You can't touch it so how do you clean it? Springs are cheap. No PDF download for Wall Bracket placement. They need to clean up and simplify their product lineup. All of these different products are without a la-men's explanation for the different screens. It was already confusing but with the introduction of UST projectors to the mix, it is now twice as confusing when trying to determine what is needed for your needs. Reading the other reviews posted here in which they are very dissatisfied with their purchase because of the poor picture quality, but the problems lies with their purchase. They purchased the incorrect screen for their projector. One reviewer has a UST projector and did not purchase a UST screen but a screen for a regular projector. A hugh screen at that. Well the end result will not be good with regard to picture quality and it is not the fault of Elite screens but it is Elite Screens fault for having this very confusing product lineup. They should at least at a minimum TOTALLY SEPARATE the UST screens from the rest of their lineup. Final Thoughts This screen replaced another Elite screen for another Epson rear mounted projector that died. Instead of going with another rear mount projector, I went with a UST Projector instead. On the old white screen, it has a very good display without any washouts. It was bright though. I knew that this was the incorrect screen for the new projector. After researching I went with this Elite screen in large part because it was an Elite that it was replacing. Once it was hanging on the wall, looking at this was a very dark grey screen. I had my doubts. Not for long. The blacks and the contrast just came alive. It was as if I had replaced the projector again with another. I then realized what all of the TV reviews over the years were always referring to about the blacks with relation to contrast in the display. This holds true to TV's as well as projectors. We watch this all day long with lights on and ambient sunlight from one side of the room. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this display. However at night for a 4K movie, we turn off all of the lights and then this screen really shines. It is something to behold. I got one “used” but the only issue was the box was damaged. The actual screen was brand new and unopened/never used. Set up was extremely easy! I did it by myself in about 30 minutes, though my back was definitely aching by the time I finished. It isn’t super heavy so I even mounted it by myself. The material is definitely much, much nicer than what you’d find on a cheaper brand’s screen. It reflects evenly and doesn’t appear too terribly washed out after having calibrated my projector to the screen, which I did by bringing up my Xbox, several movies both hdr and non-hdr, cartoons, anime, etc.. I’m very pleased with it. I will say that my ONLY gripe is it isn’t really that big of an improvement from my plain white wall. It’s noticeably better but if you’re happy with the image on your white wall then I wouldn’t suggest spending a few hundred dollars on this unless you enjoy the aesthetic of having a huge screen on the wall to say “look at my big giant TV!” ... show more
