  • Very impressed with quality vs. Current price point of under $20
Style: 24x0.4 Oz Color: Oil
So far, I’m really enjoying this fine little oil paint set from China. And it’s not so little, either! There are 24 tubes each containing 12 ml of oil paint. That’s plenty to make the novice or hobbyist oil painter feel “spoiled” and explore the craft a little bit. Since I don’t really consider myself either a novice or hobbyist oil painter, but rather a former pro artist and art teacher looking to return to professional artist status, then I will also offer some remarks and observations for those who are or aim to be professional artists. Specifically: Although the advertisement on Amazon states that these paints offer pigment information, I can’t seem to find the type of pigment information that will interest many who have taken an interest in the science ( read: chemistry) of their paints. Yes, there are pigment NAMES, eg, “phthalo blue”, but there doesn’t seem to be the pigment source material:eg, PB 15:3 ( for pthalo blue). Lightfastness information, and degree of opacity/ transparency is offered, though. My own experience with these paints include swatching and then (because I was pressed for time), choosing to work with a limited palette of six primary colors, a warm and cool each of blue, red, and yellow, plus the white provided. I think I opted to use both lemon yellow, and yellow ochre as my cool/ warm yellows., I was trying to stick with the spirit of the Zorn limited palette color choices, but also realized that my objective was to write a review of the paint set, so I included 3 more tubes of paint. I was surprised with how much I like them so far, the colors chosen for my palette mix beautifully into secondary, tertiary colors, neutrals, and earth tones. I thought that many of the resultant desaturated greys, lavenders, violets, and an earthy orangey sienna type color that I achieved were quite pretty. For the novice oil painter, or hobbyist, I would say that I had a lot of fun painting with this set. As of now, it’s only about $15. For the serious or professional artist, my advice would be to tell you to wait until you can afford to buy oil paints from brands that supply pigment source information. The reason why I say this is despite the lightfastness information provided in this set, the source of the pigment is information that tells the artist about tried and true pigment sources that have a known database of records of behaviors that describe things such as durability and toxicity. It is a database of information of many individuals and paint companies experiences with openly stated pigment sources, so that artists can pick and choose their palettes from sources that have the substance and clout that any other peer reviewed entity should and can offer,….it is not just the seller’s affirmation; it’s everybody’s account, usually over the period of decades or even centuries. Pigments and paints chosen this way can afford both the artist and recipient of the artwork that effort and care was taken to make choices aimed at protecting both the longevity of the artwork, and also the environment and all that live in said environment. One other thing: I’ve now had the opportunity to test and use oil paints from Eastern countries, and western countries, and I’ve noted some differences that seem to be regional. The eastern country so termed “professional” oil paints I’ve tried tend to be more oily than the western country “professional” oil paints. This may just be a coincidence that occurred just with the paints I’ve tested, or perhaps it is cultural. All I know is that it may be a little more difficult for the beginner to paint with western style professional oil paints, as they don’t glide as easily without an oil painting medium such as linseed oil. The oil paints from China and India that I’ve tried are more oily, therefore no such medium is necessary to thin the paints out. What all this means for the beginner is that the Elan paint set will probably be a lot easier on your paint brushes, because the paints glide rather than drag. ... show more

  • High quality acrylic paints, good color variety, priced accordingly
Style: 24x2.0 Oz Color: Acrylic
I wasn’t previously familiar with the Elan brand but, as an art teacher, I am always interested in trying new brands to see if their paints are of good quality and good value. It’s difficult to keep a small art studio well stocked at economical prices. This set of 24 bottles of 2 ounces each of premium acrylic paint caught my eye and I was eager to give them a try. These paints are quite bright, smoothly textured and easy to apply. After trying them out myself and allowing a student or two to have a try, we haven’t found any watery bottles or gooey globs in any of the bottles. Overall, each color has been very consistent in quality and thickness. Each bottle has a flip top that allows easy pouring and safe sealing. The set of 24 colors includes: Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Raw Sienna, Crimson Red, Scarlet Red, Vermillion Red, Rose Red, Grey, Cobalt Blue, Phtalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Sky Blue, Yellow Ochre, Lemon Yellow, Mid Yellow, Deep Yellow, Titanium White, Pale Green, Sap Green, Phtalo Green, Emerald Green and Lamp Black. Priced at less than a buck-fifty per bottle, the high quality of the paints in this set makes it well worth the purchase price and a pretty good deal to boot. Currently Amazon is offering a $5 optional coupon at the time of this review which makes it an even better deal than usual. These paints are clearly above average quality, especially for economically interested artists and excellent for use by children, novices, students and recreational painters. As with most acrylic sets, these paints are non-toxic. Even with average or standard quality brushes these paints go on well on the first coat and perform even better if professional quality brushes are used. The acrylics blend well, dry quickly and will retain their color with proper preservation. I always recommended using a spray sealer after a few days to properly preserve an acrylic painting. Artists can use these paints on canvas, panels, wood, stones, ceramics, or just about any surface. For the purposes of this review, my students have only used these on canvases and canvas panels. This set includes only the 24 bottles of paint which surprised me just a little bit since many acrylic paint sets these days also include some kind of a bonus such as a set of brushes or maybe even a plastic blending knife and/or palette. However, considering the amount of paints, the variety of colors and the high quality of the acrylics, the lack of extras doesn’t detract from the overall value at all. ... show more
