I picked this up as a serving board for charcuterie. It's thick enough for the job without weighing a ton, like some thicker butcher block style cutting boards. The surface finish of the board is smooth, and the edges are crisp. A quick beeswax wipedown with my favorite liquid butcher block conditioner brought out the beautiful color and grain of this dark wood and prepped the board for kitchen use. It's sold as a building piece and not a finished cutting board, so I did run a light pass with a sanding block just to just slightly round out the edges and corners, but it you're using it as a shelf, you may want to keep those sharp. ... show more

I got this board for my wife, who is the woodworker in the family. She has a jointer and planer to glue and plane her own boards, but we were curious about the fit and finish on a pre-made board. For a casual woodworker or hobbyist without access to such tools, this board would be ideal. It shipped loose in a larger box, but luckily wasn't damaged in transit. The dimensions were as advertised and had the "Smooth Four Sides" S4S finish she was expecting. The individual boards making up the larger board were glued and finished true. If you were going to use the board as is (such as a zero-effort cutting board) you'd probably want to sand it a bit smoother, but that would be an expected part of any project. According to my wife (much more the expert), one side of the board had more of a 'rustic' finish-- a couple of unfilled knots, some slight insect damage, etc.-- but the other side was uniform. So depending on the needs of your project you could use the side facing out best suited to your needs. ... show more

Out of the box, this board is already gorgeous. Definitely could benefit from a polishing sanding and some stain, but it is a nice make to begin with. It needs finishing to truly shine, but I only found the tiniest of wood defects on my piece. Bit large for a cutting board or the like, although I plan on mounting items to mine as a display piece. This is a nice piece of DIY board, it's heavy and glued together pretty well. My sample did have a jarring mismatched section of wood, but I think it gives it some character. I ordered it to use as a shelf in a bathroom, so it won't need much other than some stain. As far as cons, my sample had some imperfections, and one side of the board wasn’t as well sanded as the other. I also had to wipe it down as it was full of wood dust. It's four pieces of wood that feels the same as one solid piece. I don't shop for this stuff very much and a price tag of almost $50 for two square feet of 3/4" wood is a bit shocking for me, even being walnut. But it's definitely high quality, had a nice, smooth feel. It feels planed and sanded but it is unfinished. I got a board with no damage but that was after receiving one that was cracked through almost the length of the board. I have to say that I am unimpressed that it arrived the same way I might expect to find it at a lumber yard. It had the UPC barcode sticker on it, but completely bare. No shrinkwrap, no any wrap, no protection from nicks or scratches. No protection from damage on the edges or corners where dropping could ruin the whole board. The cracked board i received may have come from the factory that way, and any amount of retail packaging wouldn't have prevent that, but for $50, I would have expected them to show their product a little more TLC. I never include Amz's poor shipping container choices in my product ratings, but I will make a note here and encourage anyone reading to use Amz's delivery feedback to let them know if you don't feel it was packaged appropriately. ... show more

I used this hobby board to make a CNC milled charcuterie tray. I found that the finish of the board was uniform throughout. It's a natural material and there were about 3 small fills for natural voids in the wood. In my use those were all milled away, so it wasn't an issue for me. $50 for a 2 square foot board is a lot of money no matter how you look at it. Walnut boards of the 3 to 4" variety are not that expensive. However, there is a good amount of work needed to get the boards to this level of finish. To get here you'd have to edge each board, cut to length, glue them up, then plane them to 3/4th of an inch. That would take you the better part of a weekend. In the end, if you have a project that requires a board like this it may be worth the premium in price for all the time you'll save. It was worth it in my situation and I have all the tools to make my own. ... show more
