  • Good Instrument, Great Price
I play upright bass and have been interested in improving my bow technique, and always thought a cello would be fun. This is an exceptional price for a good beginner's instrument. There are some minor details that aren't quite perfect, but nothing that affects the playability. The bridge came nicely fitted for great action. Set up was a breeze, and it holds tune well. The sound is well balanced and warm. The fingerboard is listed as ebony. However, I think it is dyed to achieve a nice solid black color. I know many upright basses do this as some ebony has light-colored streaks in it, and solid black ebony is pretty expensive. For the price, I think it is well built - and the bridge being pre-carved and properly cut is a huge bonus - and the aspect I was most concerned about. A terribly cut bridge, or a raw bridge, is not an easy part to fix and shape properly. The instrument came without dings, dents, scratches - packed very well in a nice box. These photos are after I played it for a few hours and didn't dust the rosin off (which is important to keep your finish clean). I think the bow is pretty nice for an entry-level piece, the case is nice, extra strings and a stand are great bonus - not to mention enough rosin to last a very long time. Advice: get an electric clip-on tuner (CHROMATIC) if you don't have one. ... show more

  • Fantastic for the price!
I am a professional cellist, and I got this to use in outdoor wedding gigs so I wouldn’t have to bring my expensive cello into the elements. I took a huge risk ordering this, but it exceeded my expectations. It isn’t great, mind you- it sounds terrible. But it WORKS! Cecilio cellos, for example, don’t keep a tune and literally fall apart. This is much sturdier and lasted just fine during a 4 hour wedding gig. The bow is garbage; it works, but I recommend replacing it with a cheap carbon fiber bow when you can. Same goes for the strings; they stained my fingers, haha. You can replace the strings easy. It comes without the bridge set up (of course,) so if you’re a student, have your teacher or a luthier put it together for you. :) All in all, it is a fantastic cello for the price. I also love the cello stand it comes with and I use it for my main instrument! ... show more

  • Fun and beautiful beginner Cello for young students and beginner adults
Purchased this as a beginner adult, but also for my kids to have another instrument to experiment on and learn from. We've had mostly "band" instruments up until this point, so now we have something more in the standard "orchestra" family. Some key highlights from my initial usage: *Fingerboard points/dots are a great help to those starting out - I've never played a fretless instrument before, so having a visual reference when starting out was very helpful. You'll notice most teachers will add tape to a students cello to help them find the right fingers *Comes with everything you need to get started - case, bow, rosin, extra strings, stand. There was no need to run to the music store to get anything else, I pulled it out of the box, setup the bridge, tuned and was able to play. *Looks and sounds fantastic for the price. This is a real cello and sounds like what I would expect. The cello looks great and has a nice satin, almost antique'd, finish. When you first get the cello you'll have to unpack it and add the bridge, then tune. There are lots of great Youtube videos on how to perform that setup quickly. I believe they send it without the strings tightened and the bridge off so it doesn't damage in transit because of the tension - my guitars are normally shipped that way too. For the tuning, you can find free phone apps for tuning - turn the string low to high to C2, G2, D3 and A3. You only use the large tuning pegs to get in the ballpark, and turn them SLOWLY while pushing in, then use the micro-adjustments to get to the exact pitch. Again, Youtube is your friend for tuning tips. Now that I've had it sitting out at home for awhile and it's been able to acclimate to my room's humidity the tuning has held pretty consistent over the last couple of weeks. Last piece of advice. With the rosin, remember to follow their steps in the Amazon description to scratch it first, then run your bow through it many time to get a good covering of rosin. If you've never played a bow instrument before you'll find out very quickly that the bow won't make the strings vibrate correctly if there's either no rosin, or not an even enough amount of rosin applied. Overall very happy with the purchase, especially given the price. Easy entry point if you want to dip your tows in the water on cello, but also have something that is a real cello. The complete package that Eastar provides is ideal to get started. ... show more

  • Great instrument and better than the rest at this price range!
I was a little nervous about getting this instrument because it is a new product and there weren't any reviews anywhere. I could only find reviews of violins made by Eastar, which were mostly positive. After more research, I decided to go for this instrument, The ebony fingerboard and ebony pegs were important to me and some cellos at this price point did not offer that. I also liked the more natural look of the wood rather than the overly varnished look. Another unique difference between this instrument and the other cellos is the imprinted finger guide which is very helpful for someone starting out. I am not a cello expert by any means. My opinions are coming from a veteran guitar and bass guitarist perspective. I am buying this instrument for my child and myself. Overall the instrument is well constructed and sounds good to my ears. I am very happy with this purchase. My only minor complaint is that the paint could have been applied more thoroughly. Some of the corner edges are bare. It comes also with a decent softcase, a pack of 3 rosins, extra strings, bow and a stand. It is a great first cello for sure! ... show more
