Description

The story of a great airline is the story of people, and nowhere is this more evident than at American Airlines. Thus we meet giants of the industry such as C. R. Smith, the bookkeeper from an impoverished family who, more than any man, made American the colossus it is today, and Robert Lloyd Crandall, who in 1980 took over the presidency of the airline during one of its most troubled times and brought it through flying higher than ever. But we also meet pilots, mechanics, marketing experts, and scores of middle-management executives — all of whom Robert Serling brings alive with vivacity. Eagle is the definitive, action-filled history of the airline that became one of the world’s recognized leaders in air transport—a company of both courage and controversy. It tells the story of the growth of American Airlines, from a hodgepodge of carriers operating biplanes over routes that went virtually nowhere, into a giant admired by even its fiercest competitors. Praise for Robert Serling: ‘Aviation buffs will revel in this thoroughgoing chronicle’ – Kirkus ‘High level of suspense and excitement’ - De Moines Sunday Register ‘Serling has spun another winner’ – Publisher’s Weekly ‘…keeps you guessing til the end’ - Arizona Daily Star Robert J. Serling (1918-2010) was aviation editor of United Press International and won the annual TWA Best Aviation News Reporting Award for four years running. Read more

  • How American became "America's Leading Airline"
While "Eagle..." focuses mainly on the people behind AA (for which it is criticized in one review), the story of the breaking or making of any airline, "then" and now, comes down to leadership (and occasional luck -- good and bad). In telling this story, "Eagle..." rates a 5-stars. Also well covered are the many investments and systems that ultimately lead to success or failure, such as safety, maintenance, training, ancillary services, airport facilities, CAB route awards, and, of course, aircraft. If one is looking for more on these and less on AA's administrative leadership, George Cearley's pictorial history of American Airlines is an outstanding resource as is the same author's Dallas Love Field pictorial. Although not covered in great detail, the history of all aircraft operated (and, in many cases, launched) by AA, up to the date of publication are included, mainly as to why they were acquired and whether they worked well for AA -- or didn't. Especially interesting are the stories behind the DC-3, DC-7 and L-188 "Electra." The detailed account given of the latter's tragic crashes, how the cause was discovered, and how it was corrected, by itself would make "Eagle..." worth reading. ... show more

  • Leadership At Its Best
An in-depth look behind the scenes of how a successful airline should be run. C R Smith was not only a great leader and executive but a rare successful man who possessed courage , integrity, honesty and love of American Airlines and the people who contributed to its success.

Great book

  • Dated but still a great write up of early AA
This book is old now, ancient by airline and legal terms (copyright 1985.) Yet it paints the picture of the beginning of American Airlines and air travel in general. It takes you back to well before airline deregulation, to when there were hardly airlines or airplanes worth anything. And certainly nothing compared to how we travel now in 2024, the effects of Deregulation, mergers, 9/11 and now COVID rendering the current AA very different to the AA of 1985, let alone 1965 or 1945. The early history is fascinating and a product of a different time, different thinking. It’s a great read for the airline and history geeks out there like me. As a pilot for AA, I wish all the current management of AA would read this book and take a few pages from the ideas of CR Smith and the other names in this book. AA was a leader, a trailblazer and popular not just due to its size (which when this book was written, was not even half its current size). Current American could be so much more if the ideas of the past were brought back in a more modern form. A great read for the airline history buff and a lesson on how the “Greatest Generation” did business. ... show more

  • Overall a good history
The overall history is good, but there is way too much focus on individual executives. IMHO, the book could have spent more time on the aircraft and the competitive situation of the airlines as the author goes through the history of the airline. I spent a lot of time skimming the portion (and it is quite a bit) covering individual employees. ... show more

  • Really, Really Boring
This is midly intetesting if you like aviation history, but unless you are referring it in a college paper there is no point in subjecting yourself too it. Its filled with uniteresting facts and character profiles that do not matter.

  • Excellent read
I would recommend this to all airline employees especially those of American Airlines. It is important to know the reasons behind the decisions that the airline leaders made to make American what it became.

  • review of Eagle
First, the book I received came without a cover jacket. Then the content was misleading on the story of American Airlines.
