  • New Character Background Options!
Ghosts of Saltmarsh offers players several new background options that tie in well with the series of classic adventures contained within this book. The new backgrounds include Fisher, Marine, Shipwright, and Smuggler. Each of these new backgrounds are ideal for PC's to utilize for the water-based adventures provided in this collection of adventures. Something new in this book is how the authors take players using the other types of character backgrounds (e.g. Folk Hero, Hermit, Outlander, etc) and tie those backgrounds in to the events, factions, and notable NPC's in the Saltmarsh adventure area and provide adventure hooks and connections available to the PC's at the start of the adventure series. While this book consists of seven formerly published modules (with three of these seven tied in together), tieing each of the adventures together would not be a difficult task for the DM. Also, these adventures are set in the World of Greyhawk, so if you are running a Forgotten Realms campaign, you can choose to integrate these modules into your FR world with a small number of alterations (the authors provide you with options for placing the adventures in the Eberron, FR, and Mystara worlds), or you can choose to run this as written with the Greyhawk setting in mind. However you choose to run these 7 adventures, this series can also tie in nicely with other Wizards of the Coast adventures, such as Tales from the Yawning Portal, or running the higher level adventures in the series after having your players complete "Waterdeep: Dragon Heist" I look forward to running my party through the adventures contained within "Ghosts of Saltmarsh". Remember, much of this is from older modules (The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, 1981; Danger at Dunwater, 1982; Salvage Operations, 2005; Isle of the Abbey, 1992; The Final Enemy, 1983; Tammeraut's Fate, 2004; The Styes, 2005), and similar to many modules written during those eras in D&D, the size, length, and complexity of some of these adventures may seem to be painfully short. But if you have been gaming for a number of years like I have (going back to 1980 and the first edition of D&D), then I think you will have a great deal of enjoyment running (or perhaps, re-running) these adventures with your players. ... show more

  • Binding issues STILL
Book is good. Adds to the collection. But after ALL these years when the PHB and DMG came out and had binding issues, you all at WotC are still having issues with Bindings. Perhaps you all need to switch up printing/binding presses and stop using the same one.

  • Like all WTC just take care opening for the first time
Book itself is nice with good info on ships and npcs / monsters you would want to use in your campaign. Just remember though you cannot just flip these books open suddenly. They are fresh from the printer and you have to be gentle. Set it on a table and open a little at the center, then allow the two covers and halves of the pages to settle down on their own. It takes about a half of minute so don't get impatient. Once that is done press down gently on the two halves. Next time you open it, again be gentle. Eventually you will be open the book no problem. ... show more

  • Lovecraftian Themed D&D Setting
Great overall book and some excellent adventures and locales. I love nautical settings and this has that Lovecraftian feel of Dunwich with fish people, a run down town on the coast, and bigger more terrifying threats beneath the surface. Actually I am convinced “Dunwood” is a play on Lovecraft’s “Dunwich”. Artwork is top notch as usual. My only disappointment is that this isn’t set in the Forgotten Realms. I am not sure why they chose Grayhawk after years of setting adventures in the Realms. ... show more

  • Delicious Greyhawk lore with Lovecraft overtones--what's not to like?
Ghost of Saltmarsh is a great 5E D&D offering. Wizards have stepped up the artwork and production value over the last 5E module I bought, and it's a great looking book. The cover art is so much better than their usual committee-approved drek. By fleshing out the areas around the location of the first module, Wizards added a lot of support for campaigning, especially in Greyhawk. Although pithy, the Greyhawk-centric lore adds a nice touch, mainly because it is faction based rather than a big info dump. I don't have any of the U-modules in my library (I looked), but from my memory, the 5E conversion is faithful to the original, and any added material is present to support the added campaign area content. It's impossible (for me) to read this module without a lot of meta-thinking. Since Wizards set this in Greyhawk in 570-ish area, are they experimenting with a Greyhawk Revival? I took a look at their Forgotten Realms Sword Coast guide. And lo, it is shit. This product is way above that. The Greyhawk-lore is a headscratcher for sure. It doesn't even seem like a bone tossed to fans, but an honest effort to support the campaign environment. Anyway, the added ship rules are good stuff. Don't fall overboard. And the best thing about the module is the Lovecraftian overtones, which become more and more noticeable as the module progresses. Two thumbs up! ... show more

  • Warped pages
I truly want this book, due to my compulsion to have every book for 5th edition. But as with some other books from Wizards there is warping on pages throughout the entire book. Not sure if its from heat or water damage, but this is a known issue and nothing ever seems to get done. Returning it for a new one would be useless as I have done this before and the replacement book also had warping. I love their products, but hate their poor quality control. Be warned. ... show more
