Excellent book for history of architecture and for drawing the exterior

  • Challenging, but delightful
This book offers a series of great sketches to practice with and breaks it down into segments. By practicing with this book, you can develop your own sketches from observation or imagination getting the structures right and include a balanced level of detail without overworking. Enjoying it very much. ... show more

  • Not for Beginners: Buy if Interested in Architecture
Love this book. I was able to pick it up and immediately draw Fallingwater. This book is not for people trying to learn to draw, but more like an aide for those who already have the basics. Some are super easy, like the Pyramids, others are super difficult. Wish there were more instructions (how much of an angle to draw, how long the line is, etc) but I am definitely satisfied with this book. ... show more

  • Great to get some examples on how to improve your skills
Really nice catalogue of buildings, is not drawing a course from 0, but will help you understand proportion, breaking the white sheet and get started. Definitely recommend getting the Sketch Like An Architect series from the same author first, and later have fun with this one. I did like that.

  • David Drazill's drawings are clean and good sources of inspiration
'Draw Like an Artist: 100 Buildings and Architectural Forms: Step-by-Step Realistic Line Drawing' by David Drazil is an instructional art book on drawing structures. The book starts with fundamental art and architectural concepts, like drawing straight lines without a ruler and shading features on drawings to bring focus. Then there are 600 sketches of all kinds of buildings, towers, bridges and landmarks. It's a good sourcebook for drawing buildings, but I think in this case the readers should have at least a basic grasp of the art concepts. I really marveled at the drawings here. ... show more

  • An Interesting Approach to Drawing
I was unaware that this book was part of a series when I selected it, though that would not have inhibited me from selecting it anyway. I have an interest in drawing and I am technical by nature so I thought this book would be an interesting introduction to drawing more geometrical things, specifically buildings and man-made structures. It’s an interesting resource and I like it but it is not quite what I expected. If you’re looking for a book to teach you drafting techniques, this is the wrong book though its approach will help with drafting later. It does not delve into drawing precision or to-scale structures that are measured but is more of a semi-freehand approach with a straight-edge as a guide. The approach is different than other books on drawing I have seen (and I assume it is very similar to other books in the series but that’s speculation). In the first couple of pages, the author explains the steps to drawing out a structure - framing, adding contextual details, adding textures and shading, and finally cleaning up and adding the finishing details. That’s very straightforward. What’s then surprising is how each structure is presented: the drawings are presented in progressing steps, with no text. I do not have a problem with this but it was startling at first. If you’re looking for a hand-holding approach, this certainly isn’t it. This book covers more than just buildings (and it presents buildings of many different kinds). It presents drawing examples of monuments, bridges, stadiums and more. This is a different kind of drawing book and it works. The presentation style is very different than most others I have seen and it covers a lot of ground. Some may find it to be very sparse in instruction and in some ways that’s true, but if you need just a breakdown of the approach to drawing something you have pictured in your mind this approach might be the key to getting it on paper. ... show more
