Description

Filmguard Bags are designed to protect film from exposure to harmful x-rays during airport security and custom checks. These lead lined bags protect unprocessed film and other sensitive media against the low dosage x-ray machines that are used in airports around the world. Without this type of protection, unprocessed film can become fogged or streaked, resulting in lost photographs. The triple layer construction includes and outer shell of water resistant ballistic nylon, a lead-impregnated vinyl sheet and smooth interior nylon lining. Full length 1-1/2" hook and loop closures and water resistant materials keep dust and moisture out.

    • Protected my film through 7 different x-ray machines!
I went from the U.S to the Philippines to Australia to Hawaii without any of my film being ruined in the x-ray machines. Fits two cameras per bag. I was stopped two times at security to have the bag inspected and once to have it swabbed for residue b/c it shows up as a big black square on x-ray.     • Crazy Test: And it works!!!
The media could not be loaded. I bought this Domke film protector bag for an unconventional purpose — to store a collectable piece of Bauer Pottery from the 1930s, 40s, or 50s which has an unusually-high uranium content in its glaze (to give it the burnt orange color). Check out how much the Domke storage bag reduces the radiation levels when tested with a Geiger counter (see video). IT WORKS!!! And it is very well made as well… Background Story: I had helped my daughter do a science experiment a few years ago when she was in 7th grade. We tested typical household items — such as bananas, iodized salt, and granite countertops — for the small amount of radiation content that they may have. We also tested collectibles — like “uranium glass” (green glass) cups and plates, and Fiestaware and Bauer Pottery. The Fiestaware got a medium CPM (clicks per minute) radiation count, but the Bauer Pottery burnt orange glazed plate tested off the charts! From 1936 through 1943 it was typical for the “Fiesta red” Fiestaware (the burnt orange color) to have uranium in the glaze — up to about 14% natural uranium content. That was later changed to “depleted uranium” from 1959 to 1969 (still radioactive), and, according to our research, continued to be used in some of their products until 1973. Important: Any *modern* Fiestaware is perfectly safe and does not use uranium in the glaze. If you have vintage Fiestaware, typically only the “Fiesta red” (burn orange) glaze has higher levels of uranium (but it’s still just a fraction of the Bauer CPM levels we were getting). From what we’ve read, the “Fiesta yellow” glaze *might* have a small amount of radioactive content as well, but in our tests of vintage Fiestaware, only the “red” glaze seemed to have elevated levels. Lucy’s findings in her science report were that none of the household items (bananas, etc.) tested particularly higher than typical background radiation levels in our homes. Uranium glass got a small rise in levels; the “red” Fiestaware slightly higher still, and Bauer was quite high as you can see in our video — worryingly so! Our Conclusions: Any of the items we tested — including the Bauer — would be perfectly safe to have on a shelf or in a collectibles display if you were more than about 24 inches away. However, Lucy and I both concluded that we would not want this Bauer plate in a display cabinet, let alone eat off of it, or certainly not sleep with it under our pillow! ;^)) All of this is unrelated to the Domke storage products, but it should illustrate how the storage bag is likely to function for its intended purpose for protecting photographic film from X-rays! ... show more

Went to Japan for a 10 day trip and filled the bag with films: 135, 120 and Instax. Didn’t run out of film, and even returned with an unused roll. This is where the bag should work because unused films will go with me again to my next flight. It does show up as a black bag in xray machines so it could raise suspicions and rescans but I think I can rest assured. ... show more

    • Simple and Necessary
I've seen some other bags at camera stores that are lead lined, but they were absurdly priced and extremely heavy. This bag is heavy, but not overly heavy. It holds several rolls of film. I put eight rolls in it, but it could probably hold a few more. It's really necessary for when you're traveling with unused or undeveloped film. Plus, the price on Amazon (and Adorama) is much lower than I found at camera stores. ... show more

I just got the film developed that was in this case flying from California. It all came out just as expected. Apparently you don’t need this for ISO800 and lower (or something like that) but I wanted to be sure.

If you’re a photographer and fly often this is the perfect bag. Your film won’t be damaged and it’s lightweight + fits a lot of film inside.
