  • Wow. This really works.
I got this mostly as a curiosity. I got some plug cutters to make plugs, and thought I'd get this as well to see how it worked. It's thicker steel than I realized. Heavy duty bit of kit. I clamped it in a vise, I didn't mount it with screws. It works! Turns out a nice dowel. Many more sizes than the plug cutter set, so that's good. It's a bit slower, so that's a tradeoff. I'm glad I got it, worth the money. ... show more

  • Works very well and does the job.
I bought this doweling tool when other methods of making dowels failed. Deep plug cutters dulled very quickly. I use this for making hard wood dowels of the same species as my main project. The key to making quality dowels is getting the wood stock centered in your drill bit. If it's off, there's a lot of travel and vibration, causing uneven cuts and an inconsistent size in your dowels. I start cutting with the larger diameters and work my way down to one size just larger than I need. Then I finish the dowels, still using the drill to sand down to the exact diameter i need. If you're using the dowels for joinery, you can just cut down to the actual size you need. The tool is keeping the original sharpness and I've no issues with dullness anywhere. To be honest, I haven't tried the smallest dowel sizes yet. Everything I've done is 1/2 inch and larger. But I don't see how they would be different other than really needing to center your stock to start to prevent breakage. Like most things, it takes a little practice to get the results you're looking for, but I'll be using this method to create my dowels in the future. ... show more

  • Master Woodworker review
Quickly, this is a perfectly made tool for making dowel/peg that is used as a tree nail in woodworking. The cutting burr is extremely sharp and durable. The bottom has a larger exit hole about half way down the thickness of the steel, which provides ease of exit either by moving the exiting peg. The sides of the steel have a shoulder, which sits perfectly in the workbench vise jaws. The secret of getting a straight peg is to chop the blank with a chisel and find the straightest grain, otherwise the peg will not be straight. The benefit of having the holes in small increments is that there is a minimal pounding needed for the operation—that is, by starting from a slightly larger diameter, I can easily size the peg. I can’t find any disadvantages or defects… and for that I’d like to thank the whole team—from idea givers, to engineers, to machinists—thank you!!! Oh and the price is way too low for the quality of the workmanship being made right here in the USA! ... show more

  • First try went well
My first attempt, using paduk, was 70 % perfect. Some of the finished dowel had a bit of tear out. I started out with 2 sizes larger and progressed to the 1/4 sized hole and it passed through twice. My caliper showed the dowel to be right at 0.25" except on the tear out portion. Much better than store bought dowels which are available in only a few wood types. Having only made one dowel, I like this dowel plate, it's heavy solid steel. The instructions were pretty good. It is a bit pricey for my budget, but I think it will do what I need. ... show more

  • Truly a Premium Dowel Maker Tool
Truly impressed with the quality and overall tool. I've used it mainly with maple wood but it has performed so much better that expected. I was surprised by the weight and thickness and high recommend this for your wood working.

  • Tough and reasonably sharp
Made some dowels out of Paduak and Bloodwood, they were straight enough! I don’t have experience with other similar tools so I can’t compare, but I’m happy with the results. IMO it’s worth paying the extra $$$ for USA made and super tough steel.

  • Works great!
It works exactly how you'd expect it to. Quality product and very precise. Every time I'd step down I'd measure with calipers and the dowels are spot on. I DO wish the plate was a little bigger so the holes would be a little more spaced out. That way there would be more meat between the guide holes you drill into the block you build (if you go that route). I guess that would require more material and would drive the price up though. I still give it 5 stars because it does exactly what it's supposed to very well. More than twice as many holes as the lie-nielsen plate and it still costs less. I love Lie-nielsen products, but this offers the same precision with more options at a lower price, still being an American built product. ... show more

  • It's a lifetime tool so don't go cheap
Since I received this dowel cutter I have been hammering out douglas fir pegs for a mortise and tenon railing. Thankfully I have some nice, tight grain old wood. Works great and is quite satisfying. IMO it is well worth the extra cost. The plate is extremely well made.
