Top Amazon Reviews

  • Bait and switch
I’m not a regular reviewer of products on Amazon—typically I only review things that have greatly exceeded or missed expectations by a significant margin. In this case, I can say my purchase missed expectations considerably. I own a small consulting business and time is money for me. I purchased a laptop from this vendor with the title “Dell XPS 15 None Touch 15.6" Ultra HD (1920 x 1080) 6th Gen Intel Skylake Core i7-6700HQ (up to 3.5 GHz) 8GB Memory Bluetooth 4.1 NVIDIA Ge”. To me, that was pretty clear—this was an i7 laptop (which I need because my employees regularly run multiple programs that can be pretty demanding). What I didn’t notice was that the seller had a *different* product description—specifically, that the description noted this was an i5 laptop (albeit with a nicer screen) and even noted that it was NOT what the product title said (why would you not change the product title if you knew it was wrong?) Since I am a small business, I can’t stockpile laptops—and I order them as I need them. I ordered this laptop in plenty of time for a new employee starting so I could load the software necessary to get them working. This takes several hours (I do not have an IT staff—I do it all myself). When it arrived and I realized that this was not an i7 but rather an i5, I quickly realized I was stuck—I had a substandard laptop with no time to return it before my new employee started. The seller at best was very sloppy in posting his product—at worst, was pulling a bait and switch. He offered to refund my money if I sent the laptop back (thus putting me in the position of not having a laptop ready for a new employee starting). I suggested he refund the difference between the i5 and i7 chip (about $100) but he refused saying the nicer screen should make up for it (I see a touch screen as a downside for the laptop—not a bonus feature). The deal he offered worked great for him (it puts the burden on me to fix things) or I could just suck it up—I guess he won because that’s what I was forced to do. I would not recommend this seller—as I said at best he’s sloppy, at worst, he’s deceitful. ... show more

  • Bad battery- It swells and makes the touchpad unusable
The Dell XPS 15 is no doubt a powerful machine. I paid over $2000 for it a little over a year ago, and had pretty good success with it. Then for some reason the touchpad became harder and harder to push and eventually stopped working. I took it in to have it looked at and they immediately knew what the problem was, had seen it dozens of times, and asked me to power the unit down for safety reasons. Apparently the battery, which sits directly below the touchpad, goes bad after about a year. It then begins to swell (see my pictures) and potentiates rupture, especially as you put more and more pressure on the touchpad trying to make it work. I wondered if it was a fire hazard similar to the Galaxy note 7 battery problem. I spent an hour on the phone with Dell and spoke to 5 different representatives. They denied there being any known problems but could fix it for $250. Then they said they had no batteries and wouldn't have for months. I researched the issue and found dozens of other cases, and also found that Dell will not be replacing the battery ever, due to the design flaw. Bottom line is I now have a non-functioning year-old $2000 Dell laptop that the manufacturer can't (won't) fix, with a potentially dangerous or catastrophic design flaw. ... show more

  • Great laptop,though be careful!!
Excellent laptop, the first gaming laptop for adults who have good taste and dislike going to public places with a machine that looks like a tacky space ship. It is sleek fast and functional, and has great gaming performance. BEWARE THOUGH!! My laptop came with windows 10 pre installed and apparently there is a bug with the version it came with it blue screened and had to reset to factory settings, happened again and then I wisend up and updated windows 10 as soon as I cot it back up, it hasn't happened since so this is a 5 star laptop. About me: Engineer student who codes and works on the laptop all day and game when I can (though I also have a desktop for heavy duty gaming). ... show more

  • Ok laptop but company does not stand by its premium branded product
I generally do not write reviews but my experience with Dell warranty and customer support was that bad and warrants a warning for others. As a qualifier, I work in the IT field and have two engineering degrees so I think I understand technology well enough to make an informed assessment. I bought the xps 15 for my wife to use based on the spec and overall design. She is also in the IT field and takes care of laptops very well. About six months in the laptop experience power issues at the connection to the laptop and would not charge. Bought new power supply to troubleshoot and still had issues. Spent a couple of hours on phone with tech support walking through their process while trying not to explode as they implied I was a total newbie and knows nothing about computers. Finally convinced them that it was not my fault that there is no power and the laptop will not boot. They finally agree to let me return it to depot for troubleshooting and repair. Once at the depot I got an email from them saying that the problem is not warranty although it is only about 6 months into a one year warranty. They claimed it was a damaged product rather than defect so it would cost me 200 dollars to replace the motherboard. I tried to tell them there is no sign of damage externally and we did not abused the product but they stood their ground and referred me to read the warranty on their website. So much for standing by their "premium" product. Product itself worked as well as others on the market but had some unique features that is hard to find so I gave it two stars to be fair. However I can not in good conscience recommend another Dell product for home or work based on how they handled this relatively easy fix. They want you to by the expensive insurance coverage which is about a 20% premium to the cost of the laptop now I understand why...poor quality and service warrants additional coverage. Buyers beware! ... show more

  • Great Laptop
I really like this laptop. I wish though that it had the numbers on the right side instead of just at the top. I guess that has to be done that way due to the size of the laptop.
