The description says they work on benches 2.5 inches or larger. This couldn't be further from the truth. My bench is 3.5 inches and they don't clamp. To establish this was in fact the problem, I drilled a 3/4" hole in a 2x6 (1.5"thick) and they work perfectly in there. If you have a thinner bench probably 2.5 inches OR SMALLER, they will work. They fit in 3/4" holes as they should, I saw another review saying they were too small 5/8", however, this is the correct size as they need to be smaller than the hole to wedge in at an angle, so that part is correct. Also as others stated, the face would need to be ground as to not damage work. I need to find out where to buy quality hold-downs. 4 stars for quality vs. price ratio 1 star for false advertising.

This is an old tool for woodworkers and I'm excited to adding it to my work bench. The hold fasts were just as expected and I think I will get many years of use out of them.

These are not "drop-forged steel". Number 1, they are made of iron. Number 2, they are cast in a mold. Closed die drop forging is a steel shaping process whereby a heated steel billet is placed on a lower die mould block, while an overhead, die-equipped ram hammer drives or “drops” down, forcing the metal to fill the contours of the two die blocks.

Good return of investment, I think. I will receive these in a couple of weeks down in Costa Rica; i will start building my own woodwork workbench with bunch of dog holes to put these in. Hopefully they will serve their purpose just great!

These hold downs were too sturdy. The spring effect I needed. They are tough. Maybe if the were longer they’d have the needed springing tension.
