Description

Import Blu-ray/Region All pressing. John Carpenter's pulp science fiction classic - this brilliantly clever and funny parody of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, follows a warped intergalactic mission to blow up unstable planets. Four bored astronauts fill in time between missions catching up on their tans with the help of a sun-lamp, playing with a suspiciously plastic- looking alien mascot they are taking back to Earth and conversing with their female version of Hal. Things start to go horribly wrong when the spaceship computer misfires and a 'smart bomb' thinks it is God. This new master has been subject to a new grade and extensive manual frame by frame digital restoration. This we believe is the finest presentation ever of this science fiction classic... Contains the theatrical and director's cut versions of the film plus a plethora of bonus features including documentaries, interviews and so much more.

  • Need to buy it again
I loaned my copy to a friend at work who got fired, so now I'll have to buy it again. Any movie that someone buys twice is a pretty good movie. It's a good movie on its own, but what I really appreciated is that it was done on a shoestring budget back in the 70s. I first learned about it from a Thunderfoot video on YouTube. I watched numerous YouTube clips from the movie and I knew I wanted to buy it. It's about astronauts blowing up rogue planets. The bombs they use are sentient. A bomb is released accidentally and their old broken down space ship can't get away. One of the guys has to try to convince the bomb not to explode. It's a hoot, amazing for such a low budget. ... show more

  • For what it was it was a pleasant surprise.
If this wasn’t a student project but rather a well funded movie it could have been one of the best sci-fi movies. However, it wasn’t and it was made in the 70’s so my expectations were much lower and perhaps that’s why we liked it so much. It’s campy, funny and very well done considering the funding and even the props were funny… like a broom and webbed lawn chair in space and a beach ball alien. The ending reminded me of a Kubrick film but saying which one would spoil it. I grew up watching a lot of sci-fi and horror movies in the 60’s and many of the big budget ones paled in comparison to this one. I think if a director accomplishes what they set out to do then the movie is a success and cruising around in space looking for planets to blow up with your talking bombs was not the plot of a serious movie so we didn’t take it as such. It moved along quickly, the cast was good, the effects were cheesy and it was funny… and that’s what we liked about it. ... show more

  • It's Not Lucas' Star Wars But a Good 16mm Student Film
Before approaching this film, it's content or the technical aspects of the Blu-ray transfer, one must remember it started as an undergrad student short done by John Carpenter while he was at the USC film school. Carpenter kept working on it for several years to make it a full length feature film. Bottom Line: it was done in 16mm with nearly zero budget or any other resources. The screenplay was created by John Carpenter and Dan O'Bannon (of Alien screenplay fame), with Dan also playing one of the roles. Don't take this movie seriously as it was intended to be a dark comedy. There are clues dropped, particularly with some of the dialog, especially with the seemingly sentient bombs, and if you don't pick up on that, you should with the "alien" they've taken on board as a mascot and its errant behavior. The ending is straight out of a Ray Bradbury novel (won't reveal which here as it would be a spoiler). My expectations weren't all that high for a movie that took years to shoot with a total budget of under $50k using 16mm color film. Add to that the likely condition of the print or negative they were able to use. In spite of this it appears to be fairly clean without too much dust or debris. The grain is quite evident and fine details are soft. Having seen other 16mm transfers to Blu-ray, this is to be expected. Overall, it's a "student" film and a harbinger of things to come for John Carpenter as a director and Dan O'Bannon as a writer. Sit back and enjoy it for what it is, particularly the goofy dark humor. ... show more

  • The movie that inspired both "Alien" and "Red Dwarf"
There's an unfortunate glitch in the restoration which seems to be caused by a bad film splice. The audio could use some noise removal via modern software. There was also a hair in the gate at one point. But on the plus side, the composite shots showing the ship's computer with the bomb on its display look as if they were redone for HD. Given that we're talking about a student film shot on 16mm in the early 1970s and turned into a cult late night movie, this is as good as you're ever likely to see it. Special features are OK, though unfortunately John Carpenter declined to participate. He has said "I don’t like to look at the whole thing anymore, it’s an amateur film". ... show more

  • Good flick!
John Carpenter's first movie....IIRC, this was a college project that was expanded into a commercial film. Low budget, but considering that...pretty good special effects It stars one actor, Dan O'Bannion, who went on to bigger and better things...writing the initial concept for the movie "Alien" amongst others. This is kind of a "hippy-dippy" flick...fun to watch, especially if one is familiar with that era The quality of the Blu Ray is good, considering the source material was low budget (very low) ... show more

  • If you get this movie be sure and read the ...
If you get this movie be sure and read the statement by the producers before the movie starts. It sets the stage. This comedy was very misunderstood when it first came out-but who could keep from laughing at the "alien"-a large painted beach ball with chicken looking feet glued on. Or the ships computer? Or the talking bombs? Or the crazy crew? It has its darker moments and sometimes moves slowly, but I think the surprise ending makes it worthwhile. ... show more

  • Vci Video vesion is a censored version of Dark Star.
This one star review is for the bluray disc version labeled... Rated: G General Audience Studio: Vci Video I saw this film when it first came out and realized it was a comedy back then. I enjoyed the film. The original film was Unrated. This VCI Entertainment version has been censored to make it G rated. No film should be edited for content after it has been released. The censorship took away some of the humor of this film. As if there was a need for a kid-friendly version of this film. I am giving this censored G rated version a one star rating. I recommend looking for original unrated versions of this film instead. And avoid buying VCI products. ... show more

  • This Film Is Brilliant And Boring And Hilarious; Worth Watching
Watched to see John Carpenter's first movie. It is doughy and boring in some parts, but overall, it works. It's a good movie. There's some insanely fantastic stuff that a bunch of film students were able to pull off better than some studios at the time and a lot of the humor is timelessly hilarious. Reminds me a lot of Catch-22. ... show more
