Features

  • Absorbent or semi-absorbent surfaces (such as paper, canvas, other fabrics, Wood, plaster, shells and hardboard) require no special prep before brushing on Daniel Smith watercolor ground
  • Apply straight from container using a soft-haired synthetic brush for a smooth finish, or a hog bristle brush for a more textured finish, one coat will cover most surfaces
  • Curing: to allow watercolor ground to attain the correct degree of absorption, let watercolor ground dry and cure for at least 24 hours
  • Because it creates a surface more absorbent than paper, Daniel Smith works best in conjunction with lower-water paints, such as watercolors and thinned acrylics
  • Finishing: as with all watercolors, your work on Daniel Smith watercolor ground will need to be fixed if it will not be Framed behind glass

Description

For too long, the beautiful medium of watercolor has been confined to a paper- behind-glass niche. Now, with this exciting new ground, anything you've dreamed of painting with watercolor can become a reality. It's easy to use- just brush it on-and incredibly versatile. Daniel Smith watercolor ground is much better than gesso's and matte medium at handling lots of water and protects your paper from getting damaged from the water. It allows watercolors to be used in traditional ways to take advantage of their transparency and granulation, blending and flowing qualities which make watercolors special.

  • Better than expected
Color: Transparent
I needed something to make some gessoed wood panels usable for oil pastels and this added the perfect surface for them, best hack.

  • Received damaged. Leaking

I love the product but very unhappy with a leaking jar.

  • Not Transparent on Glass, but it Works!
Color: Transparent
The media could not be loaded. I waited 24 hours after applying a layer of this ground to a glass ornament. The ground was not transparent on the glass, but it held the watercolor well. I wouldn’t go in with a wet glaze towards the end of your painting as it did start lifting a little.

  • Great medium
Color: Transparent
I applied this to a piece of cut wood and it watercolored perfectly. On another piece I wood burnt an outline, applied this as well. The only issue was the medium filled the outline and the water color seeped into the burn. I just need to be more careful. I love this product.

  • it honestly saves cheap paper
Color: Transparent
it really does make cheap watercolor paper workable

  • Not opaque
Color: Titanium White
It takes multiple coats, with a curing time of 24 hours or so, to obliterate something. Nevertheless, it's a nice surface (once cured! 24 hours or so!)

  • Watercolor

Two coats would work best. Wanted to get the same watercolor effect on canvas.

  • Just what I was looking for
Color: Titanium White
I ordered this product to go over a sketch I had prepared for acylics, but changed my mind and wanted to use my watercolours instead. I only used one light layer I put it on the long way, then went over it again perpendicular , without putting on more product. I wanted the sketch to show through. I wasn't sure at first, if it was enough to make a difference in how my watercolours would behave. I waited 48 hours before trying to paint on it. I was pleasantly surprised that this thin layer worked like a charm. It takes the paint wonderfully. I can also lift it back out almost completely. I was worried the brush strokes of the ground layer would be a problem, since I did not sand it at all, but they don't show at all. Not sure if that's because it was such light layer, or if I am just not that bothered by it. The picture is of the actual project. It is not finished yet, but you can see how the sketch lines were coming through. I did them with my pigma ink marker. Just to give you an idea how dark they were before applying the ground over it. ... show more
