    • Great Little Motor
The media could not be loaded. I purchased this little motor to power our 10 foot inflatable dinghy on short trips from anchorages to land (when we are unable to dock our boat for whatever reason). I was curious as to whether it would be a good purchase, considering that name brand engines of the same horsepower (Honda, Mercury, etc.), generally sell for more than triple the price of this motor. Today I took the motor for its first sea trial. I pulled the start cord slowly three times to make sure that the engine was well lubricated (it ships without engine oil, which must be added). When I pulled hard and fast the fourth time, which was my first attempt to actually start the motor, it started immediately and ran perfectly. Once I saw that the motor was running well, I took the dinghy through our marina, up and down the small river on which our marina is located, and then out into Long Island’s Great South Bay. For the heck of it, I shut the motor down three or four times, waited a few minutes, and each time it started up again immediately. The motor performed flawlessly! Things to bear in mind: The motor did not move our dinghy very fast. Using an app on my phone (which may not be perfectly accurate) it moved the dinghy effortlessly at about 5 mph. Applying full throttle did not result in much more speed. I never had a motor for this or any dinghy before, and I have no idea how fast a 5 hp motor would be expected to move it. But approximately 5 mph is fine for our purposes. (I suspect that the motor would move a hard-hulled dinghy faster than the our full inflatable, since full inflatables by their very nature do not move through the water easily.) The brand name on the motor is different than the brand name stated here on Amazon. However, the specs and the appearance of it are exactly the same as advertised, so I really don’t care what name is stamped on the motor. A rose by any other name …. The printed manuals that come with the engine are very poor English (I assume translations of Chinese), and might be difficult to follow for someone not mechanically inclined. Although I gave the motor five stars (because I really didn’t need the manuals), the manufacturer/seller should consider producing manuals more easily read by English readers. I note that the engine required very slight assembly, and I literally could not find anywhere in the manual instructions on how to complete that assembly (which was not immediately obvious). However, as mentioned above, I am mechanically inclined, and it was not difficult for me to figure it out. Again, somebody who is not as mechanically inclined might have had difficulty completing that assembly, and the seller/manufacturer should include those instructions in clear English. I ran the motor today for about an hour. Obviously I don’t know how it will stand up over time, but it seems to be very well made.
