Description

As a leader in teaching, training, and transforming boys in Detroit, Jason Wilson shares his own story of discovering what it means to “be a man” in this life-changing memoir. His grandfather’s lynching in the deep South, the murders of his two older brothers, and his verbally harsh and absent father all worked together to form Jason Wilson’s childhood. But it was his decision to acknowledge his emotions and yield to God’s call on his life that made Wilson the man and leader he is today. As the founder of one of the country’s most esteemed youth organizations, Wilson has decades of experience in strengthening the physical, mental, and emotional spirit of boys and men. In Cry Like a Man, Wilson explains the dangers men face in our culture’s definition of “masculinity” and gives readers hope that healing is possible. As Wilson writes, “My passion is to help boys and men find strength to become courageously transparent about their own brokenness as I shed light on the symptoms and causes of childhood trauma and ‘father wounds.’ I long to see men free themselves from emotional incarceration—to see their minds renewed, souls weaned, and relationships restored.” Read more

  • Every man should read this book
Very powerful book with a lot of very relatable topics that most young men face in one shape or form. I have been recommending it to my friends and will continue to share it.

  • All Young Black Men Need To Read This
I’ve never given a public review for a book I purchased on Amazon. However, after reading “Cry Like A Man,” I felt compelled to do so. From the minute I picked this book up, I didn’t want to sit it down. Daily I woke up early and went to find some quiet place to continue each chapter. This book is for men of all ages who have experienced trauma in their lives. Sometimes we can feel like we’re on a planet all by ourselves, and that not many on this earth, or in our circles understand us. Jason Wilson showed me that there are, in fact, others who go through similar things, and have similar perspectives. Not only did his stories resonate with me because of familiarity, but because each one contained nuggets of liberating truth that I could understand, but also pray to God about applying to my life practically. This book is just amazing. It’s clearly god-ordained, and as a young, black, millennial man, married with children, I will forever appreciate this writing. I highly recommend this book, especially to young, black boys, teens, and men, who come from the inner-cities, or those have experienced trauma that has been challenging to lead a quality life without healing from it. Grace and Peace to all of you. Godspeed. ... show more

  • Reaching the depths of the soul
This book is an absolute gem. After watching the cave of adullam and almost all of Jason Wilson's interviews, I made the decision to buy this book. This autobiography is poetic, speaking to the depths of what I can relate to. I feel the deepest connection to his story especially since it sounds so familiar, Jason's transparency is amazing, and his writing style isn't stale but so captivating. I have not put it down yet, and I'm eager to keep reading. This book is a connection for the healing that I've been searching for. Thank you Mr. Jason Wilson 🙏🏾 #shalom ... show more

  • It’s deeper than shedding physical tears.
It finally came! I am looking forward to reading this book. I to suffer from pain and heartaches I’ve encountered in my life time and most times feel as though I don’t have anyone to talk to. I thought about therapy but strayed away because I didn’t want to be judged the wrong way. For a couple of weeks I’ve been alone and had time to think about the way I’ve been living and treating myself. My father in-law and I had a conversation that made me look at my life different. I normally don’t be on social media, but my wife showed me some feeds and people she followed a while back that sparked Interest to me these past couple of weeks. I came across a video of a sensei by the name of Mr Jason Wilson who posted a video of a young man punching a block with his left hand and then began to cry because he was lacking self confidence, letting the pain take over what he has already accomplished with his right fist. Mr. Wilson gave the young man comfort in knowing what his capabilities were and let him know that it was ok to cry and get that off his chest. He didn’t allow the young man to give up on himself. Shortly later he then accomplished his goal of breaking that board with his left fist. Then he let the boys father know that he appreciate the support he has shown by being there regularly and had the father and son do a meaningful, uplifting exercise together showing strength and love. I was emotionally and spiritually moved. I then went on to do some research to find out more about this man that was giving such a calm but very strong approach at life, and I came across another enlightening video with Mr. Wilson giving his interpretation of what T.H.U.G. Life meant to him. When he broke it down, what his acronym meant (Traumatized Human Unable to Grieve)”a person who wears trauma like it’s a badge of honor”! At that moment I was all in. I quote Mr Wilson “Crying Like A Man is deeper than shedding physical tears. It’s about releasing the trauma and emotional pain held in our harts and minds for years”. It’s a very good read. I think men and women should read it. ... show more

  • Excellent book

  • It was ok
I bought this book to gift to a friend of mine. I decided to read through it to gain some insight and knowledge about how to better help me understand men in the black community specifically. I read it in a few hours. I thought after the stories would come the action plans. How to recognize what challenges you face, what to do, how to overcome those obstacles. It was nothing those of us growing up in an impoverished community don’t already know. I needed more substance. It never gave how to actually become emotionally liberated. I guess one would conclude throughout the book that was implied by his continued “this wasn’t who I was” or the constant “peer pressure”. I’m kind of disappointed. ... show more

  • Excellent Read
I started reading the book immediately when it arrived. I was impressed from the very start. I knew I would essentially make it to the end of the book.. It seemed like death surrounded the author. Death after death he experienced. Not to mention, so many challenges in his life. Which is so surprising to me since he was such a highly believer in “Yah”. But I guess some people need Yah more than others. Sorrowful stories but beautifully written. I would absolutely recommend this book to all - especially to men - specifically to African American men. Excellent read... Thank you for sharing your journey through this world called life. I enjoyed every word. I wish you peace & love. ... show more
