  • Violin replaced due to very weak bow
Size: 1/4
Bought this one for about $103 when I saw the 1/4 Cremona SV-130 was at around $135. Thought I got a good deal. But a bit disappointed when received it. First of all the chinrest is not as shown in the only item picture at Amazon.com. It is a smaller piece that is attached to the left side of the tailpiece, instead of on the top of the endpin (the so-called Guarneri). Therefore it does not cover the end of the tailpiece. An indication of overall lower quality and being cheap. The paint job and overall appearance of the body are also not impressive. The bow has fewer hairs than I would like to see. The rosin is a bit broken on the edge, like having been dropped on the ground by someone already. Tuning is harder than it should be, because the pegs are a bit slippery. I have to apply peg drops to make them work. However these are all not big issues, at least not enough for me to return the violin. The strings are decent. The initial sound is a bit scratchy, but not bad. So I decided to keep it. I will update with the sound quality of the violin after it breaks in. Update: The bow broke after several months of use, about 2/3 of the bow hair came out of the bow tip. Not surprising to me. It is a very weak bow to start with. The good thing is Amazon replaced the whole violin with a new one. I just realize that the case, although nicely made, has only one bow holder. Therefore I can't put in a back-up bow there. The case has another problem, there is no space for a shoulder rest inside, although it is bigger from outside than the previous 1/8 violin case. Therefore this case is not very practical. Further update: The sound of this new violin is slightly better than the one it replaces. The pegs hold the tunes better too. So is the paint and finish. For the initial price paid, I am happy with the replacement. I have added one more star to my original review. ... show more

  • seems like a nice starter violin
Size: 1/2
I'm no expert on violins, but my kids were taking piano and guitar lessons and expressed an interest in strings, so I browsed Amazon and settled on this Cremona. It comes in an attractive green felt- (or some synthetic material) lined carrying case with an embedded humidity detector, bridge, strings, bow, and rosin block. I watched a YouTube video to install the bridge, downloaded a violin tuner from iTunes and tuned up. The pegs slipped a bit, so I bought a bottle of peg drops a few weeks later and now they hold firmly as intended. Embarrassing but I learned a violin makes no sound except scratching noises until you rosin the bow! Now everything's set up, and while I couldn't tell a Stradivarius from a Cremona to save my life, this violin sounds just fine for a starter, and kid's are comfortable with the 1/2 size. Paid $136.50 in March 2011. ... show more

  • Lovely little violin for the price, nice sound for a violin so small.
Size: 1/10
I purchased the SV-150 Premier Student Violin 1/10-size for my 3.5 year old as her first violin. We just got it today and tuned it and I did a little playing (as much as I could since my hands are way too big for it). I was impressed with the sound from such a small instrument. I showed her how to hold the violin and bow and it is the perfect size for her (her neck to palm was approximately 15 inches). She is excited that it looks as pretty and *real* as my much more expensive full size violin. When putting rosin on the new bow I had to use my "broken in" rosin to really get it coated properly instead of the new rosin included. If my daughter keeps up an interest in playing we will purchase the same violin in the next size up. ... show more

  • Nice violin for the price paid
Size: 1/8
This is a pretty good violin with a nice sound compared to ones before she had. I gave 4 stars due to her teacher always needing to tune it as it comes out of tune easily. Other than that, as a parent I liked the price and felt it was worth paying for it as opposed to renting, which I would be hesitant about since we travel and wouldn't want her to take with her like she does. Renting has so many stipulations and I can't see spending a lot on a child's violin when one doesn't know how long their child will stay with lessons. ... show more

  • So pleased with my purchase!
Size: 1/2
The violin arrived only two days after I ordered it. This violin is quite beautifully made. (We own 3 other violins)The case is fantastic--nicely padded, with plenty of extra storage room! The bow is excellent. (just like my 50$ bow, but smaller to fit 1/2 size instrument The bridge comes wrapped and secured under the tailpiece (not installed), which is the way a violin SHOULD be shipped, by the way. If a buyer is not familiar with violins, they would do well to let a store technician or a teacher install the bridge and do the first tuning and adjusting, because this instrument is NOT ready to play right out of the box. That's typical of any string purchase. The customers who wrote poor reviews of this instrument, in my humble estimation, didn't know much about violins or how to get the adjustments done. A new bridge costs less than 2 dollars and can be expertly fitted by someone qualified. Anyway, I am VERY pleased with this purchase and got an excellent price because it was in a damaged outer box. Thanks Amazon. My son is thrilled with his new instrument. ... show more
