In the northern California valley, the summer sun is intense. Temps are often over 100 deg F in the summer and the afternoon sun will heat up your home through any western facing windows. This shade does a very good job at blocking much of the sun and keeping the heat on the outside of the window. It is lightweight, simple to install and has lasted two summers. The sun has not melted the material, but I don't have anything reflecting on it either. The mechanism to raise/lower works well, but can get dislodged if you mount it slightly off. It does have plastic hardware, so will see how much longer it will last. Purchased some optional bungy clips that help to secure it at the bottom. ... show more

This is my second shade from this company. Others that say the size is misleading must have ordered wrong. Both 8’ and 10” wide shades I’ve ordered are just that. Price difference going 2’ wider is exponentially more however. After having the 8’ shade for 5ish years, my complaint is it would unroll at times due to Kansas winds and storms and had to finally devise a locking system for the handle. After receiving the new 10’ shade, the clutch drive is much stiffer and may have been worn on the old one by comparison. Which seems to be readily available to replace. I’m sure there are other shades that perform and operate better but starting at least triple the price for the larger sizes per my research. Final note, I had to mount the bungee anchors a bit unconventional for this install as I needed about an 11’ shade but didn’t want to custom order. This put excessive horizontal strain and popped an end cap off. I drove a #6 screw to hold it in the bottom tube permanently. ... show more

Product is sturdy. Replaced a roller shade that the wind constantly unsprung. The roll up mechanism is strong and the shade cloth is durable. Shade provided is just right in our application. I just installed this on my back deck and it seems to be pretty much exactly what I hoped for. Time will tell, but at least initially, I am very happy with both the appearance and the functionality. (And the size matched what I ordered: 6' wide by 8' tall.) If you want extra bungee receivers so that you can secure the bottom of the shade at different heights, they are inexpensive, but as far as I can see they can only be ordered direct from Coolaroo's web site. (They're listed in the "replacement parts" section.) I do have a few other notes: 1) I found the appropriate drill bit size for the pilot hole in my softwood beam to be 1/8" (might want slightly larger for hardwood). The instructions specified a larger drill bit size (3/16") but I tested first and that was much too large for the screws that came with the shade — had I drilled pilot holes before checking, I would have been very unhappy. (Their specified size might be appropriate if using the optional anchors, but I didn't need them.) 2) When I mounted the end units, I was very slightly higher on one end than the other. When extended all the way, the bottom of my shade is visibly not level. I'm guessing this is because of my end unit placement error, so I recommend being very precise with the vertical placement when mounting the end units. (Due to the slotted screw guides instead of screw holes, you have some leeway horizontally. It might be a challenge, but in an ideal world one of the end caps would have some kind of control letting you fine tune the vertical position too.) 3) I initially attempted to swap the clutch to the left side but to do that you have to swap the end plugs on the shade tube, and I was unable to pull those end plugs out. It wasn't important in my case, so I simply gave up and used it as-is, but for anyone who needs to do this, it might be a struggle unless there's some trick which simply eluded me. ... show more

I have had since 2018, they are still in perfect shape. Mine are under a porch but get hit with a lot of sun. You could spray some scotch guard on them if your sun is really brutal, but mine as still like new. The only bad part is, I was using a gas blower around one of them and didn't pay attention to where my exhaust was coming out. Sadly, it was very close to one of the shades and melted a hole in it :( But that is 100% my fault. Other than that they are great. Been through a lot of wind, rolled up 100's of times, and still in perfect shape(but for what I did). They are even cheaper now than when I bought them :P Will 100% buy more when I need it. ... show more

I ordered two of the 4x8' in teak wood to see if installing them would cut down on the thermal load inside the house from two windows in my bedroom which get blasted with summer afternoon sun. We had a stretch of some hot weather 95-100degrees of late. I left one window shade up, and one down....you'll see the temperature reading on the INSIDE window covering is nearly 20 degrees cooler. Coolaroo is working clearly. However, we have a nest thermometer puck in the same bedroom, and before installing these shades, the bedroom and main living area would read the exact same with AC on. I expected with the shades, the bedroom would stay cooler with the AC on, but it doesn't make enough of a difference to decrease air temp in the bedroom. You can feel the difference right next to the inner window shade, but ultimately isn't that big a deal it seems. Given my particular window installation process...12' in the air, very tough brick to drill in to, I will not be purchasing more. However, the product itself is nice. Let's see how it stands up to the desert ☀️ over time. ... show more
