I am discovering non-espresso coffee rather late in life this past couple months, and I road trip pretty regularly, so this mug looked like a good option. The filter is impressively fine. The stainless steel is smooth and easy to clean, and the polycarbonate lid was the happy surprise being easy to clean as well--I have an oversensitive nose and most travel mug lids drive me nuts with residual odors. This one does not, although I have not tried cinnamon or tea yet. They do not recommend the dishwasher, which I would ignore if I didn't like the mug so much. I have not yet knocked it over but there are NO leaks or dribbles when drinking through the lid. It seals better than anything else unthreaded I have ever tried. The lid has the drinking hole and the steam/pressure hole, and there are closures for BOTH, which is quite cool. You want both open when drinking so your coffee doesn't get airlocked, but if it's going to be a while or you are on the move between sips, you can close both and it can't slosh or drip. Plus having both openings sealed holds the heat in longer. And it really holds heat! I can take 2-3 hours to get through my cup before it starts getting down to lukewarm. This is my first pourover setup so I can't compare other filters. I did see a couple reviews that disliked that they couldn't fill the cup up through the filter because it sits down inside. These folks must like really strong coffee, because I had to cut back on both water and grounds to 75% of their suggested recipe. But that doesn't mean my mug is empty--the remainder of the 2c of water I heat goes in after I take the filter out. Since I started with espresso and then Aeropress the remaining water at the end was obvious, but it is not mentioned as an option in the instructions. Works well for me! I was so surprised. Usually things like this are gimmicky or flimsy or have some major design flaw that spills coffee all over the place. THIS. JUST. WORKS. I love coffee that stays hot and I love being able to adjust the strength of the brew. The screen is fine enough that I don't get as many grounds as I did in a French press, and this makes way better coffee than my high-end countertop drip model. I bought it for travel, but I see myself using this at home as I can quickly brew a couple of cups to my specific taste, pour one into a regular mug, put the top on the Coffee Gator, and come back and pour a piping hot refill in my favorite mug. Two things: First, the Coffee Gator will keep your coffee hot. VERY hot. If you use it as a travel mug in the car, be careful. Second, the mug is a little wide for some hands. If you don't have long fingers, it may feel clumsy in your grip. It's not slippery (or hot to the touch), but the large diameter as it flares to the top doesn't inspire a lot of confidence for some with smaller hands--this can be bad, because again . . . VERY hot coffee! I've seen a lot of reviews on here about how the top could be different. I like that the top is pretty sturdy and can be sealed completely so it doesn't spill. I haven't seen a "perfect" top on a travel mug yet, but I haven't had any trouble drinking from this. I only have to remind myself the coffee is still going to be toasty for longer than I'm used to. I put a sandwich bag full of fresh ground coffee in it, put the strainer and the top on with a rubber band and threw it into my backpack for a weekend. I love this brand and that's why I ordered a second set. It makes great coffee and keeps coffee very hot for hours if the lid is on and it's 100% closed. One thing I would highly suggest people to not use "ground coffee" in this filter. It requires significantly coarser grounds somewhere between ground coffee and french press. If you use ground coffee, small grounds will be stuck in the filter and it will block the filter requiring way way coarser grounds to be used which will affect the quality of coffee. That being said there are a few issues for me: 1- The filter that came with my second set 2 years ago has its seam started separating 6 month after the purchase. I have been using it because it doesn't affect the performance in any way but my first filter doesn't have this issue. It probably collects some left over coffee in there. 2- Despite washing the tumbler by hand the exterior paint started to come off. 3- Stainless steel interior is stained. I have another random stainless still tumbler and inside of that tumbler is still shiny as new. I suspect the problem is that Gator tumbler has some type of coating or material differences.
