So essentially this is decent if you can get it cheaply (say, under $70) . . . but if I had paid $100 or more I would have probably looked into sending it back. At the cost I paid for it, packing it back up and sending it back would be more work than it is worth, and I'll still definitely be able to use the heck out of it. Pros: I really wanted an inexpensive fire pit to tide me over this winter until I can get a better one (I actually have one ordered, but it won't be here until February or so). This fits the bill for that rather well. The design of this (aesthetically and engineering-wise) this is well-designed and from any sort of distance it looks great. Unlike many I've seen, it is large enough to not have to cut wood into really tiny pieces. It came with a poker and a cover. It has a shelf all the way around to hold drinks (presumably hot ones) or prop your feet up. It has nice ridges that hold the wood slightly off the floor, although they recommend putting an inch or so of sand in which renders those a bit moot (other than to provide added stiffness to the base). While you DO have to put it together, it is pretty easy. The ONLY thing you need is a screwdriver. There is only one size of screw, and there is an included wrench for the nuts. There are only 20 screws total, and the instructions are very simple. It probably took me 10 minutes to put together and have it outside. Cons: While it IS well-designed, the manufacturing process leaves a lot to be desired. The shelf is made up of 4 sections that bolt together. Each is a stamped piece of metal with each side bent 90° down approx. an inch to make a sort of upside-down box. This is a really strong design and works well . . . except for the fact that the automatic machine that is bending/welding them is WAY out of adjustment. It didn't bend them down 90° but just short of that so that the sides don't actually meet. It is still welded, which means you can't bend them down further. It also means that each section bolts to the next one at an angle, creating a bit of a wave design to the shelf. No part of it is flat, nor does it meet the burning parts/lid in a smooth way. I took two pictures, hopefully it will show what I'm talking about. I could have cut each weld, bent the pieces correctly, and welded it back together . . . but that's more work than I'm willing to put into a $67 fire pit. There are 4 tabs to hold the lid on, all four were bent down far enough as to be almost useless. I was able to bend them back without cracking the welds or metal, but shouldn't have needed to. The lid itself is pretty flimsy, but works great . . . it showed up a bit warped and wouldn't sit on the pit correctly until I flexed it back into the correct shape. While the instructions are very simple . . . they are wrong in one part. It shows putting on the bottom ring (which holds up the base of the fire pit itself) on with the metal tabs at the top. This is incorrect, they go on the bottom (if not, the pit doesn't actually sit on the ring, which defeats the purpose). I also found it easier to attach the legs to the upper ring first (opposite of directions), which I found out once I removed the bottom ring and put it back on correctly. While I listed the poker as a pro (since it is an extra that most don't come with), it is also a bit of a con. It is short, has a hollow plastic handle, and feels more like a child's toy. I will likely use it to open the top when there is a fire going, and it will get you started . . . but you'll definitely want to buy a normal poker/tongs if you use it much. While not a "con" (and it is an actual bonus for me), to further show the assembly plant issues mine came with two covers. I'm not going to complain, though. :) I won't know about the longevity until next year, so I may add to this at that point. In closing, I would just say that if you want a fire pit that costs under $70 and that you plan to only last a season or two, this is probably perfect for you. Check out my assembly tips above, and you should have it together and using it in no time (make sure to buy sand while waiting for the arrival). If it costs significantly more (as I write this I see the price went up to $107), I would probably advise looking for a different one. I noticed in another review the owner said that they have improved the design and that it is a lot more solid, and that may be since I *just* received mine. It seems very solid for the price and I'm sure it will withstand plenty of use. It just doesn't go together as nicely as it should. ... show more

This is my first fire pit. I bought this particular model after reviewing more than 100 others for a handful of reasons listed under PRO below, and the product delivered well on every expectation. PRO: ==== 1. It's a large diameter model. I need it big enough to hold whatever firewood I can buy locally, and this model handles it all well. I don't have to chop normal firewood into littler pieces. 2. It's a deep model. Those little pan models are out of the question. This model holds several pieces of wood and all the newspaper I care to ball up underneath. When I'm ready to light it, a single match takes care of everything for the first couple hours. Instead of giving the fire my constant attention, I can enjoy my family and guests. 3. There's a wonderful flat surface ringing the pit, and it's tall enough to be useful. The ring stays cool, perfect for plates and drinks. We particularly like keeping mugs of hot chocolate on the ring as we settle around the fire after dark, having eaten dinner there when it was light out. We also bought marshmallow roasting sticks that work beautifully with this fire pit. 4. The diamond mesh allows superior air flow. A fire cannot thrive without air, and this pit provides far more than other models. I could wish that the pan's bottom allowed air also, but that would allow debris (and hot coals) to fall through. 5. The mesh lid is solid and effective. I have no worries about safety when the lid is in place. 6. The entire unit is solid. Some friends have a more rickety model. This fire pit's legs are sturdily attached, but their real stability comes from their wide base. 7. Absolutely zero maintenance is required after initial assumbly. Just park this fire pit in your back yard and pull up a few of those soccer-mom sideline chairs. The firewood itself requires a bit of attention of course, but there's nothing to turn or tighten on the fire pit itself. 8. It comes with a cover! That's something you definitely want, and this model saves you that expense. My cover lasted until the lawnmowing service started a few months later, but I expect that any cover of any quality would not have survived that weed-eater treatment. Shame on me for leaving the fire pit in my suburban backyard grass instead of building a patio or laying out some bricks. CON: ==== 1. Assembly was a bit more difficult than I expected, but not bad really. All the parts are black, so it's hard even to see the holes and alignments. The metal edges aren't sharp exactly, but neither are they smooth and comfortable like rolled edges. The instructinos are clearly written in real English. But legs were attachable curving inward instead of outward, and the big ring was attachable upside-down. I could imagine v2.0 of this model ensuring that parts can only be assembled correctly. This one minor point almost gave this product less than a perfect score, but ultimately the finished product is what I rated - not the assembly. 2. After six months of occasional use, the wire mesh lid looks a little burned in one place. I expect that the fire got too hot once, and that a steel wire brush would make it look new again. But I'm still in zero-maintenance mode, and I care far more about the function than continuing the like-new look. Overall Summary: It's bigger than it looks, and quite solid. The size allows pre-building a long-lasting fire, and the mesh allows air to feed that fire so you don't need to tend it constantly. The wide, flat ring surface makes the whole unit more functional. ... show more
