  • pastel pencils
Color: Black
I am a beginner at pastel work. I wanted these to add details to my pastel drawings. As others have mentioned, these need to be sharpened with sand paper (i use a course Emory board). I haven't used a pencil sharpener but can see how that would break these easily. I will mention that the reason for a star removal is because some of the pencils have chalk that is very hard. I have to press very hard to use those and it makes grooves in the paper. To me that is a big draw back. I was hoping for soft chalk to work with my pan pastels. ... show more

  • Soft Enough for Deep Black Shading yet Firm Enough for Tiny Details
Color: Black
The General's 6B extra soft charcoal pencils produce a very deep, rich black, but you can get a nice range of values on the darker side of the gray scale with them as well. I love the feel of these pencils when they glide over soft textured paper. You can blend and smudge them for a lot of nice painterly effects, but they also allow for bold, crisp lines and darker details. I want a box of 12 now! The two I bought are just little nubs already. One thing you should know- don't be rough while sharpening them. I was able to use my crank pencil sharpener, but I didn't push the pencil in too hard or crank the handle too fast. Just use the tips of your index finger and thumb to hold the pencil and the sharpener, and it really helps if you are good at the craft knife type of sharpening. I bungled that, but the pencils held up to my clumsy attempts rather well, so I wasted very little of the pencil. I have other brands of charcoal pencils, and I can say that the General's pencils are the best out of all of them. ... show more

  • Broke easily
Color: Black
Got these pencils for an art class and they started breaking immediately. I don’t have a heavy hand and I’ve bought pencils like this before and they don’t break that easily. Must have been dropped or slammed against the wall before I got them

  • Great charcoal pencil
Color: Black
I like the charcoal pencil; easy to use. I prefer over using a charcoal stick. However, I have problems sharpening them to the correct point so that it doesn't break off when I use it. However, the price is good and I like the product so I will be buying it again.

  • Son needed these for his class...
Color: Black
He says "They work good enough, but can't tell much between this and another set." so give them a try, but know there are other brands and prices out there.

  • Great product!
Color: Black
These pencils are great! They are super soft so it is hard to create a light line when trying to create line sensitivity but they are consistent.
