  • Gargage door opener
Product works well and is holding up well. It has been several years and is still great!

  • Swapped with an old craftsman model
I bought this opener to replace a 20+ year old craftsman model that seems to have trashed internal gears (the motor runs but the drive gear for the chain does not). I found everything in the box as described in the offering on Amazon. Everything works as described and the documentation is quite good - proper English, descriptive, detailed, and accurate. For the installation I cheated. When I removed the old motor and set it next to the new kit I noticed that the drive gear was exactly the same. Looking at the chain I realized that it is really just a long bicycle chain and this may be a standard. On closer inspection, I saw that the mounting bolts for the new and old drive units were in the same places. In fact, the bolts were exactly the same. I read through the directions and saw that the installation matched every existing component in the old opener except for some small differences in the brackets that attached the chain to the traveling slide and that slide to the door. All I did was loosen the chain, attach the motor, tighten the chain, and it just worked with the old chain, rail, and door attachments. I DID have to replace the old opening switch, add the optical interrupt (to keep my dogs from getting squashed when they race the closing door in or out), add the outside programmable switch, configure the trucks and cars to use the onboard openers, and setup the WiFi and apps, but the physical installation was greatly shortened. This took me a good 4-5 hours, but an hour was pulling off the old motor. I know how to do it now and I think I could do the same physical HW part in about 2 hours (mostly running the wires) and take about an hour for all the configurations and adjustments. I suspect I’d take a good 4-5 hours if I’d have done it all from scratch with nothing to remove. Have a good 6 or 7 foot ladder for this. My 5 ft one was a little too low to set the unit on, attach to the rail, and then lift to the brackets. With a 6 or 7 foot and something to set it on you can get the unit to the right height for a bracket, no holding the damned heavy thing up with one arm or shoulder and getting bolts into the brace/bracket with the other. Have a 1/2 inch socket, deep well socket, open-end wrench, and box wrench handy (yep, all 4, and a ratcheting box wrench is especially useful for the chain tension adjustment). Besides that it is mostly Phillips head screwdrivers and a hammer for the staples (I cheated there, too, and used a powered staple gun). The network based opener requires getting myQ installed on your phone and creating an account. It does not work with Alexa out of the box and, do far, the limited attempts I have made at integrating with Alexa using other interfaces like IFTTT have failed. The myQ app works fine, though, and you can use that effectively on its own. It is a bit simple, but have alerts, tells you how long a door has been open or closed, if it is opening or closing, and, of course, opens and closes the door from anywhere. I can go on with other features, but overall it is all it is advertised yo be, opens my door, pretty quiet for a chain drive, and is very feature-full. I don’t actually like them too quiet. I had a very quiet screw drive at another house and I and my dogs did not hear it when it RSM. I like the dogs alerting and my hearing when they open. I am not sure if these two devices, the old Craftsman and this Chamberlain model had a common root manufacturer, maybe Craftsman relabeled or sold the company to Chamberlain, or if these are amazingly standardized (I suspect the former), but I am getting a second one to replace the other Craftsman on my other door. I will have almost 2 full sets of rails, mounting HW, and chains for parts, too. Hmm, what project or toy to use an old 1/2 horsepower opener for .... ... show more

  • I don’t see a problem with this product
I had a 40 year old Sears 1/3 HP that has worked for years which I only had to replace the worm gear inside the unit to keep it working and I would still be using it today BUT I think I my have thrown the remotes I had out when I was cleaning my garage out. So good luck finding a replacement. I tried a few that I ordered from Amazon but no luck and since Sears is now kaput you see my point. So I decided to try this model. It had several options, one I really liked is switching from chain to belt but since E Chaimberlain my old Sears was chain I went that direction. I truly like this model. It isn’t that expensive and it works perfectly with my older garage doors. It was a little difficult to get the first one up and running but with the new chain that was provided in the new kit I simply needed to remove some links and I had it working. I took the old unit down which was easy, removed the top bolts and swung the whole assembly down since the rail is set up on a pivot which really makes it easy. Loosened the chain and slipped it off the main drive, removed both bolts holding the rail on and Sears is no more. The Chamberlain came with a new chain, a new rail, a wall mount wired opener and a wIreless outdoor remote with a number pad for emergencies. It has 2 remotes for cars and, my favorite, a FREE app for my smart phone. I decided to stay with the chain. I put the Chamberlain up to the old rail and the bolt holes lined up perfectly so I then moved to the chain. The chain from the old Sears opener was a little longer so I had to remove some of the links. Now, if you have ever worked with a bicycle chain then you will understand. Included in the kit from Chamberlain was 3 master links si I removed the unneeded links and it fit perfectly. I moved the unit back up in place where the Sears was, connected it to the bracket and then plugged it in. Since the Sears opener had a wired remote I took the wire off the Sears and connected it to the Chamberlain. Took the Sears remote off the wall, connected the wires to the Chamberlain remote, screwed it to the wall and pressed the button. The garage door opened but would not close so I had to connect the infrared door sensors which are included in the kit. I really didn’t want to use these but it is a requirement. Connected the infrared sensors and pressed the button. The garage door closed but a little short. I read the instructions and was able to program the main unit to close properly, no issues. I then downloaded the MyQ app which programmed to the Chamberlain garage door opener very easily and now I can open and close the door with ease from anywhere. I can open it a little to let the cat out and then close it back. I am notified when the door has been left open and can close it from wherever I am. I am not sure why others have had issues with this unit, maybe they were just overthinking it. ... show more
