I bought this for my son on his eight birthday. We played it all day and he was thrilled with it. I had a slot car race set when I was a kid, a nice one, and this one is much, much better. The cars got better after using them for an hour or so. I think they had kind of a break in period. They began to hug the track even better than at the start. It has a neat feature on the hand control, it's a removable clip that acts as a governor. When the clip is on it keeps max speed to 70% which is still fast. With the clip in I found I still had to slow down for curves. With the clip out the car is really fast and it requires more skill to race well and remain on the track. But whether the clip is in or out there is the turbo boost button which is so much fun, works very well, and makes the cars just fly. But yet, you can still maintain control with proper bursts of turbo at the right moments. The cars will fly off the track if you give it too much speed but that is a big part of the fun. We laughed often when we'd crash at the intersection or fly off the track. Also the looped track (we always called it loopty-loop) works great. The banked curve works great. Both require additional skill but not too much for an 8 year old. I'm very impressed with the fit and finish. Assembly is easy. Track pieces fit tightly together. Nothing slips apart or moves around while racing. I'm impressed with this toy. I'm planning to buy extension components for Christmas gifts. ... show more

This Carrera formula car race set is awesome cars go so very fast and really hug the track. The guard rails kind of suck so I bought the $14 set of tall fence guard rails. The front air foil just slightly touches regular guard rails. Does not hurt the car but I didn't like the offset rails that come with the set. When you hit one of the original rails it comes apart and have to rethread it into the plastic holders. 1:43 scale cars are great. Larger than ho scale (1:64) but not huge like the 1:32 and larger ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I bought for my 9 and 11 year old boys. I did not help them set it up. I gave it to them and said "figure it out". It took them a little time, but they figured it out. They grabbed the screw driver necessary and did everything on their own. They haven't stopped playing with it for 8+ hours. It's like Christmas morning over here. It does take some practice, as you can see. The cars will fly off the track if you take the turns too quickly. It won't make the round about if you're going too slow. It keeps them engaged since it isn't so easy to use. I do not regret the purchase. Only complaint The cars aren't made very durable. A piece of the Mario car has already broken off. Once the tires and cars are warmed up you can go quite fast without going off the track it has a boost button for going to the loops it didn't take my 2-year-old to master it, although both my grandsons don't like to lose 😂

The cars constantly fly off the track and this product is not great for kids unless you want to help them with the cars. The electrical connection works about 50% off the time. You would be much better off going with HO cars that are smaller from brands like AFX. The smaller cars stay on the track and AFX has a speed setting for kids so the cars never come off the track.
