  • A Parent's Perspective of the Game:(spoiler, it's cute.)
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
I'd like to start out by saying that this is not a comparison review. I have never played the Wii U version of this game. I won't go on about saying how this is just an "HD" or a "Remastered?" version and try to sound all edgy and witty; and use big words, so you can believe I'm a super pro writer. I'm not going to point out the obvious; you already know that the Switch is portable. I got this game, because it's completely new to me, and I wanted to use the excuse of "oh I got it for my kid", when in reality, I got it for myself; thinking that my kid will like it. Since my kid is at the cousin's residence, I took the initiative and responsibility as a parent to play the game and give my thoughts about the game in general. As you boot the game, you straight out start the game; there's no title screen, and you're introduced with an isometric-like small little world, with Toadette signalling at you to begin your journey. As you follow her, directions are given to you on screen, showing you how to play the game. The first thing that you'll do is follow Toadette. As you do this, the game will tell you to use the right analog stick, to navigate the camera. Naturally, you'd use the left analog stick to walk. To my discovery, you can also rotate the camera using the L and R shoulder buttons, but this will not give you the total navigation experience, as the analog stick. Once you acquire the item that's in this level, you will eventually be introduced with a cut scene, and the title screen, which you might have been expecting. It will then officially allow you to begin the game. Toad does move slow enough for no "oopsies", and of course you can make him run by holding the B button we all are familiar with. The first course is rather simple and for good reason; it's still very much of an introductory course. The goal of each course is to find the traditional Star that's found in Mario games. You will encounter several obstacles, to which you'll have to solve, in order to retrieve the treasures. Each of them do become more complicated and challenging, but they're all fun. You'll get a chance to revisit these stages, so you can find all the necessary items, to "100%" the course; so far each course has one star and 3 diamonds that you can find, and certain challenges, like "find the golden mushroom", in course 1. Once you finish the level, you'll be introduced with your best coin run, and the date, when you cleared the stage; this is all presented to you in a nice book-like menu. As a father, I say this is good clean fun and humor; (Toad will fall asleep, if you stay idle for a while). It's a game for all ages; it's beautifully made with rich, bright colors and cute NPC (none playable characters) and enemies. If you like puzzle, and Mario themed games, then this game is right for you. Overall, I consider the game a stress free and cute game for people of all ages. I'll be continuing my analysis of the game, and see how far I can go, with all the great challenges that a player will have a chance to face. The great thing about this game is that you're not completely required to finish all the challenges, or acquire all the gems. You can simply casually play through the game, and collect the main star items in each course. As of right now, it doesn't seem mandatory to collect everything but the star. Thank you for your time, and hope you enjoy the game yourself; I mean, hope you purchase the game for your child. (Shhh, your secret is safe with me.) ... show more

  • Great value
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
A lot of gameplay for the money, levels are not so hard but sometimes a little tricky if you want to obtain all achievements. Nice sounds and beautiful picture.

  • Charming, delightful platformer
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
I was a bit skeptical at first but came away highly impressed. Captain Toad is a perfect experience for the casual gamer who likes platform and puzzle-type games. The game is simple. Navigate Toad to the gold star. However, he can’t jump so you have to figure out clever ways to avoid enemies and get to where you want to go. What I really liked was that getting the star was often easy. Sometimes you had to go nothing and it was right in front of you. But then they add a challenge of finding 3 diamonds. This adds a layer of depth while still maintaining a relaxed gaming experience. Then each level has one additional challenge (for example getting through unharmed or collecting a certain number of coins). The challenges are nothing ridiculous. It adds some replay value but doesn’t cause levels to wear out their welcome. In fact, these extra challenges let you explore and appreciate the levels in greater detail. Lastly, the game feels robust when it comes to the number and difference in levels. Leave it to Nintendo to take such a simple concept and turn it into gold. This is a must buy. ... show more

  • A very addictive and surprisingly challenging puzzle game
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
Let me start by saying that I have never played the Wii U version of this game so this review is from the perspective of someone who has only played the Switch version. I have been playing this game for the past several weeks and finally completed it this weekend at 100% completion (excluding the post-game bonus levels, which I'll talk about later). The idea of the game is fairly simple. You play as Captain Toad (or Toadette later on) on a miniature stage and need to solve various puzzles in order to reach the stage's power star. Movement is done with the left analog stick and camera rotation is done with the right analog stick. Rotating the camera to check every possible angle is absolutely essential when playing this game so it's good to get in the habit of doing this as soon as possible. There are also three purple diamonds in each stage that you can collect while getting the power star but collecting them is only partially required (I say "partially" here because later stages do require a minimum number of diamonds before the stage is unlocked). Additionally, there is also a hidden objective in each stage that is only revealed once you have collected the stage's power star at least once (These include things like taking no damage and collecting a certain number of coins). Finally, once you beat the stage the first time, you can play through it again to find the stage's Pixel Toad. This is an 8-bit version of Toad that is hidden (usually quite well) somewhere in the stage. Pixel Toad will make his signature cry when you have moved close to his location so that's how you know where he is. The game has three main books (or "episodes" as the game calls them). In the first book, you play as Captain Toad. In the second book, you play as Toadette. In the third book, you switch between Captain Toad and Toadette among the various levels. There is also a "bonus" book, which contains bonus levels available after you've beaten the main story. Among these are four Super Mario Odyssey-themed levels whose level designs look like they were taken straight from Super Mario Odyssey itself. Overall, this game is very fun and entertaining to play casually but it can get surprisingly challenging if your goal is to achieve 100% completion. Even so, this is a great game for all ages so I highly recommend purchasing it! ... show more
