Description

When a standard USB cable cannot transfer enough power to operate an external device, such as a portable 2.5in hard drive, you need a USB 2.0 y-cable. Simply plug this cable's USB Mini-b end into the device, and then plug the two USB A ends into open USB ports on one PC or Mac. This cable then pulls power from both USB ports, and thus increases the output to the external drive. The red molded hood on the auxiliary USB A connector enables the user to quickly distinguish between main and auxiliary power. Foil and braid shielding reduces EMI/RFI interference, and twisted pair construction reduces crosstalk for high speed, error-free data transfer. This cable is compatible with USB 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 specifications. Please Note: This cable is not designed to split USB signals to multiple computers. The two USB A connectors are meant to plug into USB ports on the same computer. Furthermore, thanks to customer feedback, we have extended the length of the arms of the Y from 9 to 12 inches.

  • > Does the Job
Caution: I suspect that many reviewers in fact purchased a different product, and their complaints refer to other brands and other models of Y-cables. The Cables-to-Go brand model 28107 Y-cable works well for the purpose, the quality is good, and the USB connectors fit well. As described, the cable is about 6' long---but that isn't as long as it sounds---measure how much cable you'll need before buying one. 5' to 6' is ideal for me. But since the whole point is maximum power, you want to keep the cables as short as possible. 3' Y-cables are available, and would be preferred, if you can use such a short cable--for example with a portable computer. Try not to use extension USB cables or adapters with a Y-cable---there will be a little loss of power with each connector. The long arm (with the mini-B connector which plugs into your hard drive, or DVD drive, or scanner) is almost 5 feet long. Each of the short arms are about 1 foot long, for a total spread of up to 2 feet and so, should reach USB ports even on the opposite sides of some portable computers. Of the short arms, one is red and labeled "power only"; the black one is power and data. For most users, it doesn't matter which USB plug plugs into which of your computer's USB ports, as long as both are plugged DIRECTLY into your computer's ports. If you happen to have both fast and slow ports---use the black plug in a fast port. Since the whole point of using a Y-cable is maximum power, avoid using spitters with Y-cables. If your computer has only two USB ports, it would be okay to use a splitter for a USB mouse (or other data only or low power device) and the red plug of the Y-cable. If you need more full-power ports, a powered splitter (that has its own little transformer which plugs into an AC outlet) may be a solution. Even so, try to always plug the black plug directly into one of your computer's USB ports. > Click on “Stoney” just below the product title to see my other reviews, or leave a comment to ask a question. ... show more

  • Works fine, but not the solution for me!
I purchased this USB power cable to resolve an issue I was having with my Western Digital Passport external hard drive. My computer would recognize that the drive had been plugged in, but would not assign it a drive letter or let me access it. After researching online I found numerous websites that stated that the problem may be insufficient power from the single USB port. Buying a "Y cable" was suggested as the solution. However, it did not work for me. My solution was to take the housing apart then disconnect and reconnect the adapter board to the drive. It seems that my issue with the drive was due to a poor connection. However, since this review is about the cable, the cable works well, was inexpensive, and the shipping was timely. All in all, a good purchase. ... show more

  • Good quality & practical
I am glad that I ordered 2 of these. The cable that I had with the external hard drive often lost contact, seemingly from nothing & it wasn't long enough to allow free movement on the work surface. This one fits well both to the drive & to the laptop, never a problem with getting disconnected. The long cord is a huge bonus too. The price is very reasonable & this is an item that standard office supplies stores don't carry for some reason. I found it out when I forgot mine at home & thought that I just pick up one... no. So, even if your original cord works fine, it is good to have an extra one. The shipping was extremely fast too. Highly recommended. ... show more

I bought this to try to operate a Samsung ultra thin DVD player to play movies on my Asus X205T laptop. It was not able to do this.

  • This cable is awesome!
I'll be honest, I bought this because it was inexpensive. I bought a 500GB hard drive to load all of my personal stuff off of my work computer, before I had to turn it in. After a few months, I hooked the hard drive up to my Powerbook and I could not access anything. The light on the hard drive just blinked off and on. It was very frustrating. After trying just about everything, I was about to reformat the hard drive and lose the 100+ gig of info, when I saw a post about this cable. I am so happy I decided to give it a try. The cable works great and I can now access my music, photo's and files. ... show more

  • solid cable, works great and is transfers data fairly quickly
I originally got this to use with a simpletech 320Gb external hd, and this was better than the cable that came with the hard drive originally. It was much faster, and the added length made it much easier to find places to set my device. Noe, i use it mostly to run a USB port from 2 wall outlets. It provides plenty of power for a ten slot hub, even if all ten slots are in dire need of juicing up. This cable is working out to be far superior than I expected. ... show more

  • works with Hitachi external drive
I bought this cable as a second cable so I could easily hook my external drive up to my PS3 or my Mac Tower without having to hunt around the back for the two USB jacks. Works fine. Great bargain. Although, the one part of the Y could be a little longer - it won't fit around the other side of my macbook to use the 2nd USB jack, but if you don't need it for that, it works the way it's supposed to. ... show more
