Actually the springs on this saddle are not bouncy, but are very firm. I’m still in the break in period and the discomfort is different and minimal compared to the cushy gel saddle that originally came with my bike. Yes, after a ride my bottom is a little tender, but that only lasts a couple of minutes with no lasting discomfort. A long ride on the gel saddle could leave me sore for the day. Worth the investment in comfort for me, and it will only get better with time. I like it so much, I replaced my quick release seat clamp with a bolt-on so the Brooks will still be there when I’m out running my errands. It’s a beautiful piece of leather work. ... show more

The springs are incredibly strong; don't seem to do much to dampen but you'd be surprised - they seriously improve comfort on rough pavement and gravel. Expensive, but worth it.

I bought this used on Amazon. It must have just been a return, because it was still sealed in original packaging! I was going for another B17, but because I’m building a touring bike my research always suggested a Flyer, which is basically a B17 with a spring mechanism attached. It was considerably cheaper, being “used” so I decided to order it. A yes it feels just like a B17. Obviously I’m now at the slightly painful stage of breaking it in and it is 305 grams heavier than its B17 relative, but this bike isn’t about weight anyways! And you will notice the springs! They are definitely very welcome on rough surfaces, but they do squeak a lot! Maybe this is the wearing in stage or maybe some lubricant might help! But it’s minor compared to the luxury of a wonderful iconic brooks saddle! I have B17 and a Swift on my other bikes. They are works of art! ... show more

If you are reading this review, chances are you are trying to figure out if the Brooks saddle is really worth it. The answer for me has been, “sort of.” I have been riding the saddle for almost 2 months and probably 200+ miles. It is a very handsome saddle and does make my bike look awesome. It is finally starting to soften and feel pretty comfortable on longer rides, which is quite frankly a relief because the first several rides were uncomfortable. I am going to stick with it. The spring action is also very nice for the kind of casual, paved trail and neighborhood riding I do, so I am glad I got the springs. A few things to know before you purchase. First off, it’s very heavy. I’m using the saddle on an ebike, so weight is less of a concern. I would think twice about putting such a heavy saddle on a conventional bike and would probably skip the springs if I was committed to a leather saddle of conventional bike (i.e., buy the B-17 if you have a conventional bike). Second, the seat is ridiculously hard out of the box. I’m skeptical of reviews that say it is comfortable from the first moment you ride on it - not true. I found that I needed to really work with the leather to get the stiffness out. I did this by gently bending the sides of the saddle to break the leather in, and also rubbing 2 applications of neatsfoot conditioner on the underside of the saddle, going about a week between each of the two applications. The neatsfoot helped break the saddle in and make it conform to my body shape, which is the key to making the saddle comfortable. I also used the Brooks Proofide on both top and bottom of saddle, but I did this mostly to protect from water damage - I don’t think the Brooks conditioner did anything to soften the leather. Lastly, the POSITION of the saddle is CRITICAL to comfort. I have adjusted my seat at least 8-10 times. Here is what I have learned. The nose of the saddle needs to be pointed slightly upward. This is because the saddle is designed with the intent that you sit further back on it than traditional non-leather saddles. In addition, the saddle is on rails. Again, you will need to slide the seat backward and forward on the rails to find the position that gets your rear-end closer to the back of the saddle. Lastly, you need to tighten the bolt that adjust the saddle with a lot of force. If you don’t get it tight, your adjustments will very subtly be undone during riding and discomfort will occur. I hope this candid review is helpful in your decision, and if you do decide to buy, some of my tips help you achieve a comfortable ride more quickly. ... show more

Low back issues had me looking at a suspension post but when I started adding up the weight of my B17 and a post, it was close if not more to the weight of this saddle. Although this doesn't have same amount of travel, it's just enough to take the edge of. Plus it's a lot simpler with no maintenance (pivot points). I suppose if I had a light weight saddle to begin with, a lightweight post like an eesilk might have been a better option but not riding a Brooks is not an option. I toured on one of these over 20 years ago and one of the springs broke after about 10,000 miles. It was still rideable. It had seen some abuse from someone who weight 220lbs so not totally surprised it happened. ... show more
