I make books and zines and other little bookletized things all the time. It's kind of an obsession that never really goes away. I had a longarm stapler that served me well, but the little plastic guide dealie was forever getting out of alignment, and I'd have to stop what I was doing, take all the misplaced staples out, and reconfigure the slidey guide. (Which, by the way, was pretty imprecise and hard to get calibrated.) I decided to try this one instead, and from the get-go, I knew this is what I'd been missing. Fold your document, put it on the mountain peak bit, press down, and voila! Perfectly-placed saddle-stitch staples with no guesswork or guide-tampering. I swear, for a moment, the angelic chorus sang Hallelujah over my booklets. I sang along. One tip: Ignore suggestions to buy premium standard staples. Buy *heavy duty* ones instead. 1/4" will do about fifteen sheets or so. If you have more pages than that, go for the 3/8". The standard ones are great for other kinds of staplers, but for this one and its power, it can twist regular staples in a weird, pretzel-like way. Once I figured out the heavy duty trick, it's never done that again. (I *almost* returned it until I tried them. It was definitely a pivotal bit of information that I kinda feel like Bostitch should acknowledge.) ... show more

    • Throat depth limited to 7 1/2" - Makes is too short for 11" x 17" folded publications.

While the stapler staplers well, I am totally annoyed Bostich did not see fit to make the throat depth of this stapler just 1" deeper. I truly don't understand the logic of making the throat limited to 7.5" rather than the standard size of 8.5". Had they made the throat depth just a little deeper, it would have made this tool significantly more veritable and useful I bought this stapler specifically to staple our NGO charity MoringaCommunity.Org's 10 year Anniversary Newsletter which consists of 4 printed-two-sides 11" x 17" stock paper collated and then folded in half making the finished folded tabloid document 8.5 x 11". The only way to use this stapler with a half fold 11" x 17" publication is to tightly roll up the 11" long side thus shortening it to 7". While this works, it is incredibly time consuming and requires the curled edge to be run back across the edge of a table opposite the curl to straighten it back out again for distribution. NOTE TO THE "ENGINEER" that designed this tool: Your idea is good but how about just extending the throat depth of your bending die by just another 1" and you would make this tool ever so much better. Really, what would another 2" of 8 gauge sheet metal add to your materials cost? Maybe $0.24 per unit? For anyone interested, Moringa Community is an all unpaid volunteer charity working to fight third world poverty through practical Trade Education. The idea is to not give the desperately third world poor a handout but give them a leg up to empower them to help and feed themselves through the power of education and pride in personal achievement. *UPDATE: I found someone locally who brought it from me at full price, since it’s wasn’t even open. Didn’t lose any money* I saw it’s not long enough for 8 1/2 paper, plus we didn’t need it after all. I didn’t even open or removed it from the Amazon box, but I started a return and if you plan to return it or not sure if you if it will work, this is the return policy: Product price: $ 29.27 Less return shipping label cost: -$6.47 Less re-stocking fee: -$5.85 Total refund: $16.95 Even if it’s not even used at all!     • Frustrating to use for letter-size booklets
Size: Saddle Stapler
If you are making 8.5x11 size booklets (after folding), seriously reconsider purchasing this. While technically it works, it does so by making you curl up the edge of one side of your booklet. Which is fine for a couple of sheets, but doesn't work at all for 4+ sheets of any reasonable thickness. And cover stock will not work at all. And by "fine" I mean that 1/2 the time it won't nudge the paper slightly so that the papers don't align, giving you a crooked result. When it does, it's SUPER frustrating, because now you've pretty much wrecked whatever it was you were trying to staple. The unit is fine for smaller things, but if you want to use this to staple 11x17 sheets down the middle, you'll have to find something else. I wish this was just a little bigger, and then it would be far superior to other long staplers for this kind of work. As it is, those are reluctantly a better choice. ... show more

It blows me away how perfectly this stapler is designed and built. My first project was 5 sheets of 28 lb. letter-sized paper folded in half to make a 20-page booklet; adjust your expectations accordingly. I ordered the recommended staples but ended up using a cheap no-name product we had on hand because they were just a tad shorter and looked better. I had no mis-fires; my technique is to line up and give it a whack rather than a polite push. The gadget is well made. The metal is plenty strong - no sense of flimsy - and the stapler itself opens 180 degrees (and stays open) to fill. There are appropriate anti-slip pads where they need to be. Centering the staple exactly at the fold turned out to be fairly easy. The folded booklet nestles nicely on the ridge and comes close to no-brainer perfect alignment but if you want perfection spread your positioning hand over the booklet, pushing away from the ridge with fingers on one side, thumb on the other, and feel the booklet snug into place. If you're aligning your paper with the edge of the stand to place the staple a reasonable distance from the edge, you can also glance at the "peak" of your booklet relative to the peak of the stapler's ridge. If you don't do that you'll generally be dead on or within a staple-thickess off. A plus for storage between uses - it's more compact that it looked in the picture (and Amazon's stated product dimensions are often meaningless) - but it comes in a re-usable box that's about 5x5x12 or so. ... show more
