    • Nice product...wish I had known a few things, though...
I like this as an alternative to the traditional cork board...the dark cork really looks great in my application. I took a star off simply because of inconsistency in the product...most tiles were out of square and slightly off in size from each other...some were very smooth while some were very textured. I am sure that is just the way it is for this kind of product from any manufacturer, which means no one would rate 5 stars in my book! I would like to share some things that I wish I had known to expect or wish I had done...if it helps any of you get a better end product then it is well worth sharing...some of it may be common sense to most of you, but it wasn't to me... 1. I wish I had opened all the packages and laid everything out in my garage instead of ripping open packages as I put them up. There are several reason for that...first of all there was moisture in most of the packages, I am sure due to them being wrapped up when they were still freshly processed, but I wish I had laid them all out and given them a chance to dry for a day or two. Second of all it would have allowed me to look at all the tiles to pull all the best ones (I ordered extra) instead of dealing with a mediocre package in the middle of my wall and be left with my extras being some of the best of the bunch. 2. Since the size was so inconsistent...off as much as 1/8 of an inch in some cases...I wish I had squared them up and corrected the sizes on my table saw. I know I could have found at least one corner that would have been close to perfect, so I could have easily taken a couple of passes across the table saw to square the other corners and make all the tiles truly square. Just a theory, but I would think that a super fine blade would do the job without damaging the sides...I might be wrong on that so make sure to test first if you decide to try it! 3. I skipped the tape squares that came with the tiles as that was the most common complaint, which is not surprising. I opted for construction adhesive in a tube, which worked great, but I think it would have been better to use some sort of adhesive that I could have troweled on the wall with a v-notch trowel, then set the tiles more traditionally. I think having 100% contact between the wall and cork would have been an improvement, and in some ways I think it would have actually been less work. I had considered using contact cement, and I think that would have worked well, but I decided that having a little bit of working time to slide things around might be helpful, and it was. 4. Paint your substrate, whatever it is. You will have slight gaps, and some of them might show the substrate through, so paint the wall brown first! Or I had considered applying them to tempered fiberboard first then hanging it, and that would have been a good color. ... show more

I read the reviews first and definitely made use of the advice that others gave. First, i do agree that the dark cork is pretty unusual and it does lookl ike a nicer product because of it. For thickness, they are almost as deep as the metal part on a pushpin. Maybe just a mm or two too narrow. However, you could still secure something to them with 95% of a push pin and have it hold fine. That being said, I first tried to install these onto a wall using those T pins someone recommended. The problem I ran into were in places where I accidentally hit a stud and then my pin got bent. When I tried to pull it out it tore the cork. I'd say this was 100% my fault, if I had looked for studs first (to avoid), the pins would have worked great. So then I did what another poster recommended and glued these down on a black foam board. I used regular craft glue, applied generously and let dry overnight. I then cut each one out with a razor. Now that they were fully supported, I feel I could have used adhesive strips quite successfully to wall mount. However, since I didn't have any on hand, I used very thin nails and just nailed each corner into the wall. With the added thickness of the foam board they are both easier to secure and have enough depth to more than account for the depth of a push pin. For the two I messed up the corners on I just trimmed down the entire tile. I am very happy with the purchase for the price. I will be ordering another pack for sure to use in another area of my home. ... show more

    • different lots will have slightly different color
order one batch of 4, like them, then ordered 2 more for a total of 12 individual boards. The first four were every so slightly lighter than the 2nd batch, so I just intermingled them when installing to make it look intentional. The 4 pieces of double sided tape enclosed is not close to being enough mounting hardware, even the instructions said to use 6 at a minimum. I bought some heavy duty double sided mounting tape from big box retailer and used about 20 1" squares of double sided tape per board. Any less and the board may still stick to the wall, but the parts without the tape were loose and easy to bump and break off, especially if the boards are actually used and not just on the wall as a decoration. The additional tape was especially important since this went behind a dart board, so pulling darts out with the minimal mounting tape would likely have left me with many damaged and broken boards. The boards themselves are very nice, and do look very nice too, so it still gets 4 stars for that, but loses a star for the lack of proper mounting material. ... show more
