  • A Little Tricky, But Works Better With Practice!
I just want to start out by saying I was terrified to try this blood glucose monitor testing set on myself. I hate needles so much, and the thought of pricking my own finger just seemed like something that I would not be able to bring myself to do, not even in the minutes leading up to doing it- but I decided I would attempt it anyhow, and in retrospect, I am so glad that I did!!! I wanted this kit just to be able to check on my own blood sugar from time to time. I am not diabetic at this time, however I might be flirting with it, and I just want to keep an eye on things. But to do that, I had to be able to use the automatic lance in this set, and that was such a scary endeavor for me. I could write a book on this little device, but I just want to stick to a few points here. First of all: you need to have your own alchohol wipes, to clean the spot on your finger before you do this. Those do not come in this kit. Second of all: The automatic lance, is sort of like an epipen. You load the blue tip into the delivery device, by unscrewing the cap and placing it in. Take the blue cap off the needle, so that the lance is exposed, then place the cover back on the pen and twist it back on. You "load" the trigger by pulling down or toggling on the button on the very bottom of the device. When you do, you hear a "click" and the clear button on the front of the delivery device changes from clear to red- this tells you the lance is loaded and ready to use. Do not bump that clear button on the front, that springs the lance!!! I did this by accident prematurely. Several times actually... But if you do -you can just reset it, by toggling the button down on the bottom. ( Note: The lance tip is very short and tiny. The photo actually makes it look a bit scary than it is. ) Now here is one criticism I have of this set, and it is that they tell you to set the "depth" of the lance, by rotating the dial on the cap. And that is all they tell you about that.....The settings for depth go from 1 (most shallow) to 12 (TWELVE!!!) and they say just pick what you want. Well- I don't know what to start with and there is not hint of what number might be right! Obviously I want to do the minimum depth to draw blood. So what I had to do was start at 1 and just start pressing the trigger and changing the dial up until I drew blood finally!! That is like Russian roulette for me, and it was a bit torturous, not knowing what to expect if it would hurt or not! I'm going to save you a bit of time and tell you that 4 was the magic number for me. And to put your mind at rest, if you have not done this before, you can barely feel a thing when it pierces you. It almost is painless. I can't tell you how relieved I was by this!!! Third point: I would like to mention, this does have decent instructions with it, thank goodness. Fourth: (and this is going to backtrack to before you draw any blood,) before you do your first test on your blood you do a "control test" with a bottle of sample solution they provide for that. Just to make sure the device is working right. This is very good, and gives you a trial run of how it works before you have to prick your finger. Fifth: The "S" button they mention is the black button on the side. It is not marked with an "S" in any way. The front button is the "M" button and it IS marked with an M. Sixth point: this does come with the batteries you need . Seventh point: I had to prick my finger 5 times trying to get this to read right, two things I want to point out that will help you avoid having to do it that many times to get it to work: first of all: set up your test strip in the monitor and make sure it is shoved in well. Secondly, just know that the "well" they mention that you put the blood drop on, is the little silver rectangle divot at the top of the blue testing strip. (see my photo with my blood drop) Also know that if you are having trouble getting the monitor to test the blood, you haven't jammed the blue test strip in firmly enough. I think this was my key problem in figuring this out. Also please note: you only get one try with each test strip. If the machine thinks you used it already (and somehow it knows) it will give you an error message when you try to press it back in again to retry. The lance, even though you are only supposed to use it once, you can reset and reload a few times if you need a few pricks to get this working right. After that though throw that tip away, they give you plenty of tips in this set. I think my key problem in in getting this system to work for me, was not getting that strip firmly in enough. If it has worked right when you put your blood drop on the plate, you will see it do a 5 second count down to the results. If you dont' see that 5 second countdown either the test strip wasn't in far enough, or the metal collection "well" didn't register your blood. The photo I took however, shows the proper placement for it to work. Also note, when you prick your finger, they don't want the first drop of blood- you dab that on a cotton ball and then you squeeze out a second drop and that is the one you actually test. Finally on the fifth try, I successfully got a result. And the booklet does tell you what a normal range should be at different times of the day and after or before particular meals. I thought that was nice too. In summary: this set has everything you need except for the alcohol wipes. It doesn't hurt to prick your finger and 4 is the magic depth setting that will draw blood. Be sure to press the blue test strip into the monitor quite firmly, dot your blood on the mini metal rectangle at the top, and this should work out for you fine! ... show more

  • Very nice complete set of blood glucose monitoring kit.
Complete. This is one of the few kits out there that comes with its own testing solution. There are several similar kits out there, but most of them do not come with testing solution. I also appreciate that the replacement strips for this monitor is available, and at a reasonable price. The last monitor kit that I got worked fine, except for the fact that I could not get replacement strips anywhere. This kit does have replacement strips available from the manufacturer, Amazon, as well as other outlets. All in all, this is a nice starter set or a set to keep at work for occassional testing. ... show more
