Description

Powerful and universal retellings of seventy-eight divine stories, legends, and myths from around the world, each accompanied by a gorgeous illustration from acclaimed artist Yoshi Yoshitani. Many of the lessons we learn are shared stories passed among cultures and generations. In this riveting collection of fables and folktales from cultures across the globe, characters from beloved fairytales, cultural fables, ancient mythologies, and inspirational deities are brought to life, including Sleeping Beauty (Italy), Rapunzel (Germany), Jack and the Beanstalk (England), Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexico), Sun God Ra (Egypt), the Crane Wife (Japan), and dozens more. Lesser-known stories introduce characters such as the volcano goddess Pele from Hawaii; Mwindo, the wise and powerful king of the Nyanga people; and the strong and resilient Yennenga, mother of the Mossi people in Burkina Faso. The recurring themes of conquering evil, overcoming adversity, and finding love and companionship are woven throughout this collection. Yoshi Yoshitani's art style is fresh and unique, featuring diverse and multicultural characters. Each story features a lush and vibrant illustration. Read more

  • Great Stories and Great Illustrations
The stories are wonderful and some deserve a further deep dive! I loved learning about different stories from all around the world and what different stories have in common!

  • Happy Companion
I purchased the digital version of the book as a companion to the deck made by the author. It was an wonderful introduction to tales from around the world. The illustrations are beautiful and the each of the stories are a simplified summary of the tale. This was like an appetizer that makes you crave the full meal, it was just enough to send me searching to find copies of the whole stories. As a companion book with the goal of giving deeper meaning and context to the artwork it's fantastic. ... show more

The author has created a world of her own with the dynamic colors and beautiful artwork that accompany stories from around the word. Whether you purchase this book as a companion to the tarot, or to enjoy on it's own, you'll hardly be able to put it down. This will be one of your favorite purchases.

  • Five Stars or the Stunning Artwork!
I found a deck of tarot cards designed by this artist, Yoshi Yoshitani, in a hobby store. They were so intriguing that I wanted to research the various stories Ms. Yoshitani was drawing on for the images and their potential meanings. And then I found this little book that put it all together in one place! I believe the artwork was predominant in the author/artist's mind when she compiled the stories. In some cases, the story is only sketched in, as it is too long and complex to fit in to a book of her desired scope. And no doubt, a more literary retelling of any of these stories could be found separately elsewhere. But the number and beauty of Ms Yoshitani's artwork, and their evocative power, make this little book priceless. For those wanting more emphasis on the literary aspect, her short versions could prompt you to search for other sources, while you have her illustrations to enjoy as well, at a very modest price. ... show more

  • Simplified Tales with Gorgeous Illustrations
This book has gorgeous, vividly colored illustrations with some of them reminding me of a tarot deck with coins, swords, etc. I also enjoyed the skin-tones matching the story's origin. The stories themselves are very simplified versions of many popular tales, which would work well for a very young child's bedtime story. Some tales were new to me and I am mildly curious about the full tale. A nice easy read for adults wishing to clear their brains before falling sleep. Very much enjoyed it. ... show more

  • Great Book (though bizarrely organized)
I purchased the related tarot deck and loved the cards and though the included LWB hinted at the accompanying tales, I just had to get this book to find out the stories behind the fantastic art. I love having larger versions of the arts and knowing the full stories helps in both connecting with and reading the cards. The book is high quality with crisp printing on good paper. The stories in some cases are a bit succinct and some definitely could benefit from being drawn out more, as each story consists of just two pages (one for the art and one for the actual story) but it captures the essence of each fable well enough. My one major complaint (and the reason I deducted a star) is the stories are not arranged in the same sequence as the deck and seem to be in no particular order. Therefore, if using with the deck, looking up the story for the card(s) drawn is rather complicated. If one doesn’t immediately recognize the story portrayed on the card (many will probably be familiar but many more will not be so) they then must refer to the LWB (as the story is not referenced on the card by name) and then go find the “full” story in this book by using the index in the back where stories are listed by title and then turn to that page. This would have been so much easier if the stories were organized in the same manner as the deck. It is still though a very good purchase and necessary to fully appreciate the deck. ... show more

  • Beautiful aetwork, great stories!
I likely would not have bought this book, if it wasn't for the reviews. I was looking at a Tarot deck and one thing led to another. I am SO happy that I read the reviews and added this to my cart. The artwork is beautiful, the stories are well told and the book is sturdy and beautiful as well! Everyone should have a copy of this on their shelf! ... show more
