  • Comfortable
Size: 10.5 X-Wide Color: Black
Very comfortable

  • Well made, comfortable and seemingly durable, but ran a bit large for me.
Size: 12 Color: Black
The good: This is a well-made and good-looking boot that seems to be a hybrid tactical boot and sneaker. It is very comfortable and feels secure. The toe cap meets the ASTM standard and is very solid. I'm impressed with the lacing system which holds my feet securely in the boots, even when the boot seems a bit large. It starts with a decorative deubré between the bottom eyelets and the top three sets of eyelets have a loop attached to the tongue so the tongue stays in place. The bad: 1. A bellowes tongue, that is the type of tongue that is attached to the side of the shoe, would be useful and preferable to this plain tongue. 2. The shoe sizing did not work for me. I've worn size 12 and sometimes 12 1/2 shoes for about 40 years. I ordered a size 12 and they seem a bit large - I feel like the front of my foot is floating inside the shoe. Bottom line: these are very good boots and I will use them, but they are not quite perfect for me. ... show more

  • Like most good quality shoes, you need to break these in
Size: 8.5 Color: Sage
Updated Review 22 Apr 2022: I've continued wearing this pair of shoes for several weeks and I still really like them. The catalyst for updating my review was the experience with the sprinklers this spring. I activated the sprinkler system, a process that previously had left me with wet shoes (and socks). After walking through the wet lawn and being sprayed multiple times, water did NOT ingress and my socks remained dry! I'm even more happy with this pair of shoes from Bates. Original Review 7 Apr 2022: These Bates Men's Rush Mid Work Composite Toe shoes are very stiff and need to be broken in. I had to loosen the laces in order to get my foot in. When I got my foot in, it felt like a large, spacious cavern, as if it was 1/2 size too big...BUT...when the shoe laces are pulled back up, the material comes in and holds snug against my foot, ankle, heel, etc. It is important to properly lace the shoes otherwise an ankle injury may occur. When properly laced, the laces are too long and I trip on them, so I have to double-knot. The shoes were pre-laced but I had to re-lace the top section so that the ends would come through the final eyelets going outward, because the lace was uncomfortable and cut into the top of my ankle before. I included some pictures that hopefully makes it easier to understand what I'm trying to say. I've been wearing these shoes for 3 full days and they still aren't fully broken in yet, but I'm sure that in another day or two they will be. As for the composite toe, I didn't feel like dropping a hammer on my foot to try it out, but it does seem sturdy enough to provide protection. ... show more

  • Comfortable, need breaking in. Snug upper fit.
Size: 10.5 Color: Grey
These look like someone merged a work boot and athletic shoes. They are larger in overall size than a typical athletic shoe. One obvious reason is the composite toe - this adds a lot of volume. But I have to say - wearing these, I have no idea there's a toe cup - there's no seam, edge or bump. I have boots with composite and steel toes, and they require special socks with thicker toe areas. Not here. Regular old socks. The soles have the least "aggressive" treads I have seen in a while. The grooves are just over 1/8" deep. Most of my boots and shows are three times that. There's also no pronounced heel. That means that these will not be good on ladders. After wearing for a few days, mostly sitting at my desk, driving a few miles and walking a bit, I've found them really comfortable from the ankle down. Above that needs some breaking in. Size: Depending on the shoe/boot, I need a 10.5 or an 11. A 10.5 in these is perfect, even with mid-weight socks. ... show more

  • Good for safety
Size: 8.5 Color: Grey
These boots worked out well for my work where a safety toe is required. They fit ok, I have odd sized feet so I won't hold the shoes accountable for that. It took a few days of constant use to really break them in, but once they relaxed they were comfortable. The worst thing about them is how fast they get dirty, but they are shoes and staying clean isn't something they really need to do. The higher ankle support is also nice if you tend to roll your ankle easily. I do work around slippery conditions occasionally and thankfully I haven't had any serious slips, these shoes keep traction pretty well. Probably not the best for winter conditions, but I have separate boots for that. ... show more

  • Comfortable, well made, nice looking boot
Size: 10 Color: Grey
My son hasn't ever worn a shoe with a hard toe so it took him some time to get used to that aspect of these boots. The first time he tried them on he said that they were comfortable but strange because they are more room-y than he's used to. After the first couple of days he decided they were one of the more comfortable boots he's worn and he loves them. They are very well made and he loves the sneaker look. The material is thick, breathable, and keep his feet both warm and dry. They are slightly heavier than anything he's ever worn but that was only noticable the first few times he wore them. The sole is thick and and has a nice tread, he says they give him the stability he needs when working on wet surfaces. One thing that he did change out are the laces. They are slightly longer than he's comfortable with, but that's more a personal preference and doesn't affect how he feels about the boots. ... show more

  • I thought it was Bates, but it is made by Wolverine in CCP.
Size: 12 Color: Sage
These boots aren't truly Bates, nor are they American made. They are made by Wolverine in CCP. They are not cushioned very well either. They ran pretty long. I usually buy a 12, and don't have much room left, but these were at least one size too big. They are harder than what you'd expect from looking at them. The sole is pretty flat, and there isn't much for grip on them. For the money, and what I knew of the brand, I'd expect better, or at least be assembled here. They aren't horrible though. If you need a cheap work boot, and don't mind the colors, they might be what you need. They do have a safety toe. Since they ran big, there is room for thicker socks. I'd save my money and buy a, "Berry Compliant" American made boot for three times the cost, but a lot of folks can't. ... show more
