  • Very nice speaker/mic
Style: Speaker
I was expecting something more in line with what I have been reading. That this was going to be some piece of junk, yet those who write like that... "you get what you pay for"... just aren't very good at expressing themselves. I have to agree and disagree with them on this product. I got what I paid for and I am glad. This is a very nice speaker/mic. So, is it cheap plastic? It might be but it feels sturdy in my hands. It has some mass to it so it feels like it is solidly built. Do not feel light weight or cheap to me. I really like it and it fits very comfortably in my hand. I have only used it a few times now. The audio is not an ear piercing screeching sound. The tone is correct for my ears. It may seem a little low for others but for me it was perfect. There is only one thing that gets to me and that is a slight popping sound when the receiver turns on and turns off. I am sure I will become accustomed to that given time. But at this time it is a new sound that will take a little time. I ordered this just a few days ago and got it today. Was not suppose to be here until the 4th. Very fast shipper and excellent price. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Surprising good sound and functionality
Style: Speaker
Dual review, the good and bad. First microphone purchased: Good. (from Bond Telecom). This must be a newer revised version, because there is a definite improvement in transmit audio quality, according to the signal reports I have received over older versions. Also, what stands out as new on this model is that the case is held together with torx screws as opposed to standard phillips screws on previous versions. I did have to take it apart and widen the microphone access port a bit, as this seems to be a common problem others have mentioned. Otherwise, I like it and am quite impressed of the functionality and sound for the price. I would recommend this speaker microphone. (however, see below) Part 2, the second identical (supposedly) speaker microphone purchased (from Myxx): BAD. The first one worked so well that I bought a 2nd one. This one had very bad audio reports on transmit: low muffled audio, noisy, unable to hear me well, however, the speaker section worked perfectly. This one had phillips screws holding the housing together, correlating with the older versions. This second one got returned. Off to look at some Wouxuns. Either that or I'll buy another one from Bond Telecom. Not all speaker mics are equal ! ... show more

Great deal

  • Nope.
Style: Speaker
Everything is fine with this speaker mic EXCEPT the microphone-- the performance is lousy and I received nothing but terrible audio reports. "Again ?" "Negative copy, please repeat" "You're muffled, try again" "Can you get closer to the mic and repeat ?" I took the thing apart and it appears that the primary issue was misalignment of the mic element and the hole through the case to the outside world. I tried to fix this with patience and a dremel tool. It helped, but the audio reports were still pretty bad. I bought two on the same order, both have the same issue. So: Deal breaker, cannot recommend. The PTT is wibbly, it feels cheap and breakable. It worked well nonetheless. The case is cheap lightweight plastic, but again it gets the job done with no problems. The speaker is also okay. The best part is the cable. It's pretty decent quality ! The cable is also the reason I did not return these speaker mics... going through the hassle of returning them so I can get a few bucks back-- and I mean a few, you see how cheap a two-pack of these beasties costs-- wasn't worth the time. Especially since I can unsolder the cable from the speaker mic case and use it to rig up an SSTV cable between my HTs and an iPhone or Win tablet. :-) That project worked out dandy ! Saved a good amount of time and some cash vs. ordering parts from Mouser. Bottom line: Yuck. Cannot recommend unless you need a two-pin Kenwood HT plug + cable for a homebrew project and plan to chuck the rest. I bought two of these mics and gave them every chance and an honest try. I'm sorry to say that this specific model is lousy. I've used other Baofeng brand compact speaker mics that are fine, also have tried the Wouxun and MFJ branded compact speaker mics. No problems with those. ... show more

  • Terrible Mic - Good Sounding Speaker -lol!
Style: Speaker
I gave it three stars because of the price only. This mic is very inexpensive and should not be compared to a professional high quality mic. I plugged it into the Baofeng UV-5R radio and turned on an FM local radio station. The sound was full and clear. It has more low end fullness to it than the internal speaker on the radio, but the internal speaker on the radio seems like it goes a little bit louder due to the higher pitched frequencies that are inherent. The mic on the radio is ten times better, clearer and stronger. The hand-held remote mic sounds muffled and low when transmitting. I recommend doing the "mic hole mod" suggested by another user. Take apart the mic casing by removing the screws. (and separate seam-?) Set the parts aside and notate how they go back together. Drill a small hole into the front cover where the microphone element meets the plastic. This will allow more of your voice to hit the element directly and create a stronger, clearer mic signal, but be careful not to overdrive the mic into distortion by speaking too loud, and also be careful not to spit, drool or spill any liquids into the modified hole! The newer models make it very hard to separate the molded plastic mic housing. A great little cheap-o mic for a great little cheap-o radio! If you plan on listening to this for the FM radio, weather, scanning, etc, the two-way radio speaker mic is a nice cheap addition that will sound better than the internal speaker in the radio, but once again, keep in mind the mic is terrible for transmitting. I'm happy with mine for what it is. I had a contact with a guy using a local repeater and the cheap mic and it worked well enough plus the added convenience of being able to read the LCD screen or not having to hold the radio if you have a mobile or external antenna connected.
