  • Cheap but elegant solution to hiding all our home theater equipment!
I moved into a house that the previous owner had all the home theater components in a closet. He was using an RF system to relay the IR commands from an expensive remote control to a base station. The unit was several years old and would not recognize my newer components. After consulting with the distributor, they recommended an upgrade to the system with a cost of about $500! I already had a Harmony 650 remote and dreaded going through the macro process to get everything working. I found this device (BAFX Wireless IR Repeater Kit) on the BAFX website. There were no reviews. Over at Amazon, no reviews. But I purchased it after viewing their video. It arrived in 2 days. I quickly connected my Yamaha RX-V673 receiver. It worked with my Harmony 650 remote. Next my Apple TV. It worked. Next my Sony Blu-Ray which also worked. Then the Comcast box and after experimenting with the sensor placement (as shown in the BAFX demo video), that also worked. Update: the Comcast box is flakey with this device. I tend to believe it is the Comcast box and not this kit as every other device works flawlessly. I think Comcast prefers an RF signal but also accepts a IR. In this cast the IR does not work as well and takes multiple button entries or does not even respond. If any one has any tips on getting it reliably working, please post! I mounted the antenna/power transmitter box behind my wall mounted Panasonic Plasma 55" TV. The sensor is mounted on the lower right of the TV. No IR interference at all from the Plasma TV. Bottom line, it is simple, works, easy to install and cheap! Great product, well made. I just hope it last a while! ... show more

  • Great for IR devices in a closet
We have all of our AV equipment in a closet about 20’ from our TV. Most of the devices are RF but our receiver is IR. We had been using a universal remote with an RF to IR converter inside the closet, but that remote is not programmable by the user and I was tired of paying someone to program it. I got this and hooked it up in about 5 minutes. It works pretty great, but there’s a slight delay so the remote for sat box (spectrum) fails to turn on the receiver when it turns on the sat box and TV. I expected that and plan on getting a different universal remote later. Right now I’m just using one of the eyes on the receiver. I’ll eventually put the other eyes on our other equipment. This system consistently communicates to the receiver. I mounted the transmitter box behind the TV and the eye on the very top of the TV. I had read about the annoying red light. Ours is not visible since we mounted it with the light pointing towards the ceiling and back on the bezel of the tv. Still gets the signal every time. I like that you have the option to use the usb for power or the supplied plug. Overall, it does the job, was pretty darn inexpensive and extremely easy to install. ... show more

  • Easy setup & works well
Product seems reasonably priced, was easy to set up, and it works as advertised. My unit is just in the next room and so the transmitter only has to send its signal through one interior drywall-covered wall to the receiving unit. It works just fine. I'm glad I had read other reviews, some of which emphasized the importance of covering up or carefully placing any unused emitters. It's mentioned in the instructions provided with the product, but would be easy to miss. I'm only using one of the emitters, so I just bundled up the other three together with the emitters pointed in towards one another, and then wrapped them in masking tape to keep them together. Some critical reviews mentioned that the one-sided tape on the sensors did not stick well. I just installed the product a couple days ago, but they are sticking fine so far. Be sure to clean the surface with alcohol before sticking the sensors. That should help. Other critical reviews mentioned that it can be hard to know where to place the emitters on the device being controlled. I suggest testing the placement to make sure it functions before sticking the emitter to the device. So, all that said, it's only been a couple of days since my installation, but everything is working well. The wires for the sensors are quite thin and could be easily damaged. That concerns me a bit, and is the only reason my rating is a 4 instead of a 5. But again, so far so good. I'm very happy with the product. It allows me to control my CD player (I know...old school) from my listening room, which is next door to the living room where all the AV equipment is located. Love it. My last concern is about durability of the product, since many critical reviews have said that it stopped working after a year or less, and were unable to get it back working again even after working with tech support. If something like that happens, I'll try to update this review (though the absence of such an update does not, of course, necessarily mean that everything's going well!). ADDENDUM AFTER ONE MONTH (3/30/23): Product continues to function well as far at its main function of transmitting commands from the remote, but I can now confirm what others have said: on some surfaces the adhesive on the sensors does not stick well. One sensor was affixed to the plastic surface of my DVR and holds well, but the other sensor was attached to the edge of a vinyl-coated shelf. Despite cleaning the vinyl surface with alcohol before affixing the sensor, it has slid off and will not stay attached. I'm hoping that using double-sided tape will fix the problem. ... show more

  • Had problems but have gotten things to work, but not for long. Quit working altogether.
Nice metal boxes and connectors. Looks like a quality product. Unfortunately they do not perform as advertised. I experimented for a couple hours and I could never get an IR transmission to receiver connection past 10 feet. Actually about 8 feet line of sight was the max dependable range. The boxes would not extend IR across a room, much less from one room to another. Turned out to be a waste of money and time. Find something better. Update 9-19-2017 I kept experimenting with these IR extenders. I was trying to use BAFX extender with a Verizon Arris IPC100 cable box. I ended up ordering an Inteset Technologies INT-IR38TX Infrared Receiver for my Arris cable box. This receiver when plugged into my cable box made the cable box work with the BAFX IR system. I'm not sure why the range was so short before. Now I am able to use the BAFX receiver on my porch with the BAFX transmitter in my room over garage. Update No.2 9-26-2017 Worked well for a couple days. Controlled my cable box with no delays. Stopped working and now I can not get it to work at all. Too bad, this gave a little taste of the capability I needed. ... show more
