Description

Symphonic and jazz trumpet players have always experimented with ways to create a darker sound by using various mouthpiece add-ons to add weight and mass. The Bach Mega Tone Mouthpiece takes these experiments one step further. To create the Mega Tone, Selmer starts with genuine Vincent Bach mouthpiece designs and more than doubles the outside mass. This darkens the sound and allows you to play at higher dynamic levels without distortion. Mega Tone slots extremely well so pitches center dependably, and a slightly larger throat affords less resistance and greater flexibility. The result is a warmer, more powerful sound that adds a new dimension to concert, pop and jazz playing.

The Bach trumpet mouthpieces have been the standard for many years (75 or so). I grew up playing a Bach 7C and later, when I was a sophomore in high school, I moved to the Bach 3C — a bigger inner diameter. (I still find that the 7C is a fine mpc, by the way. And, there are many variables to consider when choosing any Bach mpc.) I played the 3C for years. I used it when I was in college in the jazz band and when I played in the pit for musical (but not operas), and for any commercial work that came my way. By then, I had moved to a Bach 1C for orchestra and brass ensemble work. The switch back-n-forth was never a problem. But, after that, though I kept to the 1C for "classical" jobs, I switched to a Bob Reeves mpc for commericial work. I play Monette mouthpieces these days, though. (I really like them.) But, for the 3 or 4 calls I get per year to play on a C or D tpt, I found thru experiment that a Bach 1.5C is close to the Monette I play, rim wise. Plus, at $55 or so bucks, the Bach cost about one-sixth what I'd have paid for a Monette C mpc. With the savings. Bottom line: you can't go wrong with a Bach mouthpiece. It's sort of a Cadillac (or Ford Continental), while a Monette is a Lamborghini. ... show more

I have been experimenting with different Bach trumpet mouthpieces for a few years trying to find the one that works best for me and this may be the one. Mouthpieces I have played in comparison are 7C, 5C, 5B, 3C, 1 1/4C. The inner rim contour is a little sharper (not painful) than most Bach mouthpieces including the 5C which gives me more precision when hitting my notes which is why I chose this mouthpiece. Although the rim is the least comfortable of the mouthpieces I tried, for me it is most playable and precise through the entire scale including the upper register which is a fair trade off. The timbre of the 5B falls somewhere between a 3C and 1 1/4 C. Interestingly, I found the 5C difficult to play but the 5B easy because of the rim contour. Other than comfort, I don't understand why this mouthpiece is not more popular. If you are buying a Bach mouthpiece I found the descriptions written in the Bach Mouthpiece Manual on the Bach website is a good guide in choosing. Also I found rim contour is more important than size measurements and comparing different brands is like comparing apples and oranges. ... show more

Initially, I had believed the megatone mouthpieces were good, but now worth it. After all, eighty plus dollars for a mouthpiece seems quite excessive. HOWEVER, when I began to play my trumpet with my newly shipped Bach megatone 3c mouthpiece, my views quickly changed. I don't know where to start. I'll start with tone. The tone of Bach megatone mouthpieces, I feel are much more "round"; the sound fills up the room. Maybe I'm over exaggerating slightly, but the sound the trumpet makes with a Bach megatone mouthpiece rather than a mass produced mouthpiece is noticeable. Overall, the tone is more full, and darker additionally. Second, I felt it was SO easy to play when I was using the Bach megatone mouthpiece. I was overblowing; it was that easy. In other words, the player should have more control when using this mouthpiece. Because of this, playing vibrato also came easier. I definitely felt that playing vibrato on the mouthpiece came easily, whereas I had to try very hard to play vibrato on my old Vincent Bach mouthpiece. Additionally, I think the mouthpiece looks cool, which may have aided me in making the decision to buying the mouthpiece. The only people I would not recommend this mouthpiece to are beginners. All trumpet players really need a mouthpiece fitted to them. Well this one just so happens to fit me perfectly. I had owned another Megatone 3C, but the finish came off (my fault). So I got a new one. The heavy weight aspect really helps with tone. And the larger throat really helps to keep the mouthpiece more free blowing than others. It shipped as expected and came packaged well. This mouthpiece helped me with the following: 1) Range- Switching from a 7C to this improved my range actually by about 2 half steps. not much. but it helps 2) Tone- The cut vibrations with the weight really allows for the tone to be much darker and more pure. 3) Intonation- Not much effort is needed to play a note with this mouthpiece, so the tuning of the notes can be better concentrated on. 4) Endurance- Since the mouthpiece requires little effort to make a sound on, one can last for a good amount of time. Especially with a good warm up. Overall, this is a great mouthpiece, and I would definitely invest on one again. You definitely get more out of it than you pay for! ... show more
