  • Incredible setting for a UBi Soft sandbox first person game
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5
As a fan of the Farcry series and one of the few people that really found Farcry Primal a great experience, Avatar : Frontiers of Pandora delivers fully. I actually bought a PS5 for this game because I saw it was exclusive (not on PS4) (while waiting for this to come out I've enjoyed 2 excellent exclusive games already - Dead Space remake, and Remnant 2) Those were great, but even they did not prepare me for the "wow" factor I got when experiencing the jaw dropping tropical setting of Avatar. The amount of varied plant life, streams, mountains, huge trees, vast valleys and swamps- just stunning and exploration is an absolute joy. This is especially true when you gain the flying creature companion you can ride in the skies. The mission to be able to tame your flying creature required you to climb an epic series of valleys and waterfalls. That experience will end up being one of my favorite gaming experiences to remember. Getting back to comparison to Farcry: -same overtaking outpost system, which is addicting -fast travel enabled at camps when discovered -there are a few types of bows which are actually more fun to use than the machine guns, shot guns, etc. - but this game really reels in the selection of weapons. -the shooting mechanics are admittedly not as tight as Farcry games, so people that thought those had not so good gun mechanics might really feel let down. -there is good customization, and a good skill system to distribute points when leveling up. I will get into some criticisms, but to be honest, the joy of exploring such a huge beautiful would (the best, most lush and gorgeous that I have ever experienced in a video game), these few drawbacks so far have not diminished the allure to keep playing and exploring: The cooking/recipe system with combining plants to get buffs and be able to upgrade weapons is overwhelming and complicated. It's definitely ambitious, but I would much rather prefer a simple currency system where I could go to a village and just pay to upgrade clothing or weapons. Having to find certain plants and then combine them with others to get the upgrade you want is too time consuming. There is a huge data base of plants and creatures that get updated as you find them in the world. Much to take in if you want. I would say it's kind of overkill, but I have to commend the developers for taking the Avatar universe so seriously and packing so much into the game. There is much to do and much to see in this game. In conclusion, those that appreciate the generous content and beautiful huge worlds to explore in games like the Farcry series and Assassin's Creed sandbox games (Valhalla, Odyssey) should really enjoy Avator Frontiers of Pandora. This this pretty much is a milestone in that style for this new generation of console ... show more

  • Not to be missed, even if you're not a fan of the movies.
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5
I feel like this game flew under everybody's radar because (A) there's a bit of a weird dislike or disregard of the Avatar movies among gamers, and (B) there's an understandable Ubisoft open world fatigue at work. However, it's not just Far Cry with blue cat aliens. It's a really great open world game. Here's my original mini-review, posted to social media last year but re-posted here in its entirety: Yes, AFP is built on the bones of Far Cry and features a huge open world with lots of side quests, collectibles and enemy outposts. And yes, it's a first-person action/adventure with guns and bows and a map you gradually de-fog to reveal points of interest. It's different in many important ways, not least of which is the setting; the alien world of Pandora, as seen in the James Cameron movies. As a stand-alone story, it can be enjoyed even with a cursory understanding (or even none at all) of the Na'vi (tall blue catlike aliens) and the RDA (human invaders, aka "sky people"). The main thing is that you at least like the Far Cry style of open world games; maybe hunting/crafting as well, which is a core tenant here. If so, I highly recommend AFP. Big, beautiful, and fun. ... show more

  • This game is what current Gen was made for
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5
It took 3 years into this Gen but Massive did it. The PS5 version is incredible. Fast loading, vibrant and jaw dropping graphics while maintaining good fluidity. And the dualsense controls and audio are incredible. This game is going to be the standard for open worlds going forward. Full day night cycle, dynamic weather and graphics at a decent frame rate. Pros: see above and Co-op Cons: main story is meh, the clouds leave something to be desired, the difficulty curve can be frustrating, you cannot go in guns blazing. And Internet connection is required to install, like Jedi Survivor The game however can be played completely offline once installed. ... show more

  • Beautiful World
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5
This game is better than some might make you believe. The world is absolutely beautiful. Yes, it does follow the "Far Cry" formula but I don't mind that so much. Yes, it can get repetitive, but so can most games. There is very little "hand-holding" in this game, so you may need to really read the text on screen and do some searching online but otherwise, you get used to the way it needs to be played. There are certainly some quality of life improvements that they could make and even a few issues that make me scratch my head. You won't find intensely involved missions in this. It's more about exploring and completing tasks with a few large building thrown in here and there. Don't get me wrong, there is enjoyment to be had here, so it's worth a purchase. ... show more

  • Time to head back to pandora
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5
I love the movies and love this game. It is open world so you can explore and experience so much. You can play at your own pace when it comes to missions and quests. There are mechanics to the game that some might find difficult, like the food bar. You have to feed your character so they dont go hungry and have the energy needed to traverse this part of pandora. You can eat basic foods like raw meat and berries but you’ll definitely want to get the cooking aspect down for basic dishes. 8.5/10 ^_^ cant wait to play the dlc ... show more
