Review of - ATOPNUC Tiny PC - AMD Ryzen 3 3250U - 8GB RAM - 256GB nvme SSD - Mini Computer - I purchased this tiny computer to set it up as a - pi-hole - adblocking system, running Ubuntu Linux and the pi-hole application. - The ATOPNUC MX30 tiny computer was on sale for Amazon Prime Day for quite a nice, inexpensive price. - To understand what this computer is, imagine a laptop computer's internals, but without a screen or keyboard. That is what these little computer units are. - SYSTEM COMPONENTS The MX30 contains an AMD Ryzen 3 3250U, which is a laptop CPU with 2 cores / 4 threads, (a couple generations back cpu, but just fine - the ATOPNUC website has similar models with newer CPUs but their pricing is much higher to match). The MX30 comes with one (1) 8GB 2400MT brand name Crucial dram SODIMM installed. However, its in a standard laptop style setup with 2 SODIMM slots, so both can be populated so that the system's RAM operates in dual channel mode. The MX30 also comes with a brand name Kingston Gen4 256GB nvme drive. The AMD Ryzen 3 3250U CPU can likely only operate at Gen3 speeds, but the Kingston Gen4 nvme is fully compatible. Tthe MX30 comes with Windows 11 Pro pre-installed and activated (Windows 11 Pro key checked and copied into a text file using the ShowKeyPlus windows application). The little MX30 unit has the HDMI and USB ports noted in the amazon product description. Note also that the unit I received, very nicely, did not have the antopnuc logo on the top, just a clean black surface. I've left the clear plastic shipping protective sheet on for now. - During 1st setup, Windows 11 Pro allowed me to complete setup using a local account (YAY!) because I did not plug in the network cable during 1st Windows 11 boot and setup. - PRACTICAL USAGE For someone who needs a computer for tasks like running LibreOffice, Krita, GIMP, Mozilla Thunderbird email, Brave or Vivaldi web browser, vlc media player, and other software for basic office tasks, this 2 core 4 thread CPU computer has plenty of capacity. This is not a computer for video editing or high end computer gaming. This tiny computer has a niche and it seems to work well within those limitations. The built in AMD Radeon graphics also seem superior to equivalent onboard graphics in Intel CPUs. For a small business just getting started, a few of these truly inexpensive tiny pcs, plus some monitors, keyboards, and mice, would make a great approach to getting small business office computing going on a minimal budget. - UPGRADING There are 4 rubber grommets on the bottom of the computer that need to be removed to open the computer. A small Philips head screwdriver with a long neck is all that is needed to remove the recessed screws under the grommets. Inside, the are 2 standard laptop type SODIMM slots for DRAM, 1 slot for an nvme SSD drive, and bracket built into the top part of the unit with a built in adapter cable on the mobo for installing a 2.5 inch SATA drive. It took just 10 minutes, with my own extra nvme ssd and 2 8GB SODIMMs on hand, to turn the MX30 into a system with 16GB of DRAM and 1TB of nvme ssd storage. However, even at 8GB ram and 256GB nvme storage as shipped, the MX30 is more than capable of running Ubuntu Linux and the opensource linux pi-hole software application, which is what I bought this tiny computer for. - COMPANY WEBSITE The company - ATOPNUC - has a website with other models, mostly not available on amazon. The support information the website is scant however. The website doesn't even include instructions for opening the unit to install upgrades. However, that process was simple and painless, as noted above. - GOOD VALUE FOR ITS INTENDED PURPOSE The atopnuc website also include numerous other models in a similar housing, but with higher end CPUs, more DRAM, and larger NVME drives, but at expected and reasonable high prices. - This tiny computer is by far the best system of its type and price point that I could find after scouring amazon for these tiny computers for quite a while. ... show more

    • Amazing little PC!

I was specifically looking for a small light gaming PC, and was pleasantly surprised! For the price ($200 after coupon) there was nothing else in this price range that even came close! My next newest PC was a general Dell Inspiron laptop manufactured in 2014, so even at lowest settings on most games, it would not even work. Sims 4 was barely playable! So my most basic requirements was that it would play most games released in the last 10 years or so at minimum settings. I was able to play Age of Empires 4 at medium settings, smoothly, which I count as a win for a little PC with a laptop CPU and integrated graphics! For the nerds, there is a discrepancy in the description. It's an Intel 1G Ethernet port, not a 2.5G port which to me, doesn't matter anyways as I don't have networking capabilities beyond 1G anyways (Due to ISP incompetency....). The 2 USB ports on the back are NOT USB 3.0, rather USB 2.0. Not a big deal to me, powered USB 3.0 hubs are universally available. I was more than impressed with the hardware included. It comes stock with an Intel 500 gb (roughly) M.2 NVME ssd, and dual channel 8 gb Crucial RAM (16gb in total). They also include a SATA connector inside the PC enclosure to add even more space. They also included ample space at the top of the enclosure to place the drive. You may want double sided sticky tape or thermal tape to adhere it so that it doesn't rattle around while you move the PC. I did try an older HDD, and it wouldn't boot with that connected (power issue possibly?). I'll try with a newer SSD (with lower power requirements) and update the review once I get around to it. The biggest question I had when purchasing this was whether or not the MOBO (American Megatrends) supports overclocking (memory, GPU, CPU). I am happy to confirm it does! BIOS is different than I am used to, but all the options are there! Easiest solution is to Google what the options mean in the BIOS, and go from there. Once I work out what my final overclock is, I'll update the review. Swapping RAM and SSD was incredibly easy. Remove the 4 rubber feet at the bottom and remove the 4 screws, and the whole bottom comes off. I purchased a 2TB Crucial M.2 NVME 2280 SSD PCIe Gen4 (this device only supports Gen3, oops! Still works though) and 2x TEAMGROUP Elite DDR4 32GB Single 3200MHz PC4-25600 CL22 Unbuffered Non-ECC 1.2V SODIMM 260-Pin. Note that because this is a mobile CPU (i.e. laptop) you'll need to buy laptop ram (260 pin). Also, the description made it sound like it can only support 32gb of ram. That's per channel. It actually supports 64 gb in a dual channel configuration. Word of caution! I caused two thermal shutdowns on this unit. First, I didn't remove the plastic clear sticker off the top of the PC while I was testing it. Second, these things are really meant to be mounted sideways. The fan directs air out the bottom of the unit. If it's set on top of anything solid (like a desk), it will overheat. Turn it sideways so the fan can move the air out, and it does not get hot. Barely warm actually. There is a reason why they provide a VESA mount adapter with this mini PC. Mount it on the backside of the VESA mount on the monitor so as to maximize air flow. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this unit. ATOPNUC created "A Top Notch" product in my opinion. My main reason for buying this was so my family and I weren't a decade behind the times. I wanted us to be able play at decent settings on newer titles we care about (Fortnite, Roblox, Sims 4, AOE4, etc), and also be mobile and powerful enough for me to take to a friend's house and remote play my Xbox for the heavier titles. Last thing. I paired it with a cheap "Pumpkin" brand 15.6" 4k touchscreen portable monitor (like $250 with shipping?). It's connected via USB-C, and fully supports 4k 60hz with touch capability. It does not have enough power to supply the monitor, so I do have to carry two power adapters, but.... I have a 4k portable touchscreen gaming setup. Compare that to the cost of a "gaming laptop" with similar specs, and you could spend quite a bit more than I did. ... show more

Turned this on the first time and it showed the windows loading action, then the screen went blank. 10 minutes later and it was still blank. Tried several more times with the same result until windows booted into its recovery and could not fix anything. Decided to try a Linux distro in case the Windows install was just borked, but I could not even get Linux to boot into anything but a blank screen unless I booted into safe graphics mode (800x600). Tried with Garuda, Ubuntu and SUSE each in KDE and Gnome, all with the same result. UPDATE: I did find that it works fine IF you use the USB-C port for video ... show more

This is pretty impressive specs for the cost. Bought several. They work great. Not a high end gaming CPU OR GPU but work great for offices and most homes. Mounts right on the back of your monitor, has all the ports you need. I really like the dual HDMI ports. Had no problems setting up.
