  • view too narrow for 10" Newtonian
Size: Long Version
Long version: The field of view of the long version is too narrow for my 10" f/4.7 Newtonian telescope. The view is so narrow that I cannot see all the 6 clips of the primary mirror at the same time, so the collimator does not work for me. The build quality of the unit seems solid. It might work for Newtonians with focal ratios greater than 4.7. Short version: I tried the short version as well, but the unit was defective. The crosshair was not centered in the field of view when looking from the peep hole, although it looked centered from the opposite end. I think this offset was caused by a misalignment of the 45-degree shiny metal insert relative to the tube. The offset was too large to be acceptable. ... show more

  • It works just as it should
Size: Short Version
Works really well, but you have to know what to expect and what to do. Read up or check online videos on how to use a collimating cheshire. The pinhole you look through on this one is very small, and the collimator is very short. The crosshairs are clear, and it works for collimating my 114mm reflector. Edited: May 4, 2018 I used this in the past few days to collimate my AR127 and ST80 refractors, so it works for refractors as well. You can unscrew and remove the crosshairs frame, a much appreciated feature of this cheshire. It looks like the crosshairs can even be screwed into any other 1.25" eyepiece, much like a filter, and used in centering stars and planets. For refractors, you should use a laser collimator to align the focuser tube to the primary lens first and foremost. If you need instructions on how to collimate a refractor, there are a lot of good resources online, especially in the backyard/amateur astronomy forums. ... show more

  • a solid collimating eyepiece
Size: Long Version
I use this with my 10" dob. It has a small field, so if you are very far out of collimation start by just eyeballing down the eyepiece tube and line things up. There are plenty of online resources to use these. Be aware that what it does is center the eyepiece to the center of the mirror. It isn't necessarily the case that the center of the parabolic curve is centered mechanically. Check your star shapes to make sure there isn't any coma after the collimating eyepiece is used. It is well made and all metal. ... show more

  • Wish I had gotten the long version
Size: Short Version
I bought this to collimate a second hand Orion XT8 that was way out of collimation. The XT8 is my second scope, but was my first attempt at collimating. It took me many hours and I still wasn’t really happy with my progress however when I finally got it outside one night I realized it was actually pretty dialed in. I’ve been using it a few times a month for a couple of months now and haven’t had to touch it again. Definitely get the long version if it fits, I wish I had. I going to soon purchase something else for collimating. ... show more

  • Doesn't seat firmly.
Size: Long Version
The problem is the neck where it meets the focuser is not flat and square, more rounded, which allows the tube to bobble easily no matter how tight the screws so the slightest bump and the crosshairs are in a new position. The worst thing is this was intentional because the basic machining would have left a flat square face. ... show more

  • No batteries required!
Size: Short Version
I was given a 114mm Newtonian telescope for Christmas, and promptly dropped it on our first outing. I figured this would be a helpful tool to re-align (collimate) things. It WAS. Found some decent instructions online (don't count on usable instructions to be included) and was able to get my telescope back on track. The wire cross hairs on mine didn't seem to be centered correctly, but I was able to rotate the eyepiece to compensate. (-1 star for instructions and cross hairs). ... show more

  • key to mechanical collimation
Size: Long Version
I bought a used 10" newtonian telescope. I first purchases a laser collimator. It got me optical collimation of my scope. However, I was still not getting the full capability of my big 10" mirror! I read more and realized I needed a Cheshire collimator to achieve mechanical collimation as well. This Cheshire collimator was key to getting my secondary mirror properly positioned and aligned. This Astromania Cheshire Collimator works great, is easy to use and the price is very affordable! Thank you Astromania! ... show more

  • Saved my telescope
Size: Long Version
I used the lens cap with whole that came with telescope to collimate. Thought I was good but still didn't like image quality I was getting. Got this, couldn't believe how far off my telescope was. Looks much better now and am happy with the telescope. Saved it from FB marketplace.
