Equal signs on swampy southern circles swim in waves toward the central Dungeon council. Georgia's held soft and sultry evenings across the ages, but Big Boi and Andre 3000 deliver the new South in a refined and supremely talented way. After soothingly being told to "Hold On, Be Strong", "Return of the G" reminds you of the duo's street values early, daring you to keep foolin' around and holding down the old hood on weak hater stilts. This is one of my favorite rap songs of all time, direct, masterfully crafted words over a block bumpin' bass. There are entertaining street level interludes throughout the album. If you're only listening for the exceptional beats, the chatter on the album may be distracting, but it adds depth to the album where many fall short using the same technique. The guest spot by Wu-Tang Clan after "Rosa Parks" is a welcome surprise. This flows into the skinny nighttime lightbeam beat on "Skew It on the Bar-B" with Raekwon. "Old school playas to new school fools...they done changed the rules" echos the disappointment Outkast has for the new crop of popular rappers. So many worthless gold ambitions and misplaced priorities, paper thin when faced with the strongheld streets of Mantua. The title track sets us into a slick groove at the heart of the album. Then in two parts we are instructed on "Da Art of Storytellin'", the first a mystical journey into curves feminine and not always storybook, the second a ham radio swamp battle call to arms. We've really gotten down into the dank gothic depths of this southern castle by "Y'all Scared", the crew of tomb tenders repeats a soliciting refrain "If you scared say you scared" haunting the track. There is so much spirit in this album, Outkast conveys emotion so well in their music. Perhaps it is the rare mix of sounds, diddies, tunes, and voices interacting unexpectadly between the elegant, thought provoking poetic verses. I certainly don't come close to having experienced a life like Andre and Big Boi's, but they connect on levels with the audience that go far beyond the specifics of an upbringing. They breakdown issues that impact us all, with genuineness and skill rare in any genre. It doesn't get more real than Nathanial's minute plea from a prison phone. "Liberation" with Cee-Lo gives us hope of a better future. The last song "Chonkyfire" demonstrates Outkast's blending talent well. A thickly layered syhnthesizer haze holds us in a dark morass, setting scenes like "a dark and stormy night in Atlanta" and "rats, mice, snakes". Then in a ray of the clouds breaking, the cutting violas and distorted electric guitar wail disappear and the piano kicks in setting us on a clear path for the lyrics Big Boi's about to hit us with. In a line that has provided me hope for rap since I first heard it, chiding the fool "making them think hip-hop is dead, exhume the body if you ain't scared." The slang is so strong and fast at times that I lose track of the sequence, but "Chonkyfire"`s substance comes through, a heavy, bulging burn that won't let me off easy if get cocky. Thrown in casually like so many of their genius lyrics across several equally excellent albums, they are not working toward a big finish or radio friendly jingle. "Aquemini" pushes into the spaces between, the rivers of stories and scenes that flow through our lives, past and future.     • Great album! Outkast is the truth and this is one of their best! Hip hop has fell off from this!
Hip hop noawadays has fallen way off from what it used to be. Albums like this show that like nothing else. The beats and the lyrics in this album are top notch and really make me miss the 90's. Outkast was a revolutionary group and made some of the baddest music I've ever heard. Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning GOOD! LOL! Anyway, the group is at their best with this album. The vinyl from Amazon came in great shape and is a good pressing. It sounds loud and clear and has no defects to speak of. A plus is that they gave me the album in mp3 format for free with the purchase of this album, which I really appreciate. I can use this albums music with my digital DJ Controller now. My favorite song off the album is Synthesizer. They were way ahead of their time with that joint, seeing as how we're facing down the onset of AI, robotics, and Elon Musk's recently announced NeuralLink bs. I also own Outkast ATLiens album which is a special edition vinyl with special artwork printed directly onto the 2 albums themselves. I wish this had been a collectors edition as well, but I'll take it the way it came for sure! I give it 5 stars or 5 Source mics (old skool right dere!). Anyway, buy it and enjoy a better time for hip hop! ... show more

Bought this to replace my original from the 90s. What else is there to say? Buying an album more than once means it's an all-timer.

    • Extremely good album, not their best one
I had heard some tracks off "Aquemini" over the years that I really liked and having loved all the other Outkast albums, I bought it finally. "Aquemini" is definitely solid and has it's share of amazing tracks that rival a lot of other artists out there (even some of Outkast's own material). The group continues with the experimentation here but tries to ground it some too and not get too carried away with it. "Atliens" remains my favorite album by Outkast because they didn't hold back and it went to their advantage. Sometimes on this album, I get the feeling that either one of the duo is trying too hard to prove to the listeners that they hadn't gone too soft or that they hadn't lost their roots (I never thought they did). Don't get me wrong, there are some of the best tracks that Outkast ever made here like: "Return of the G", "Rosa Parks", "Skew It on the Bar-B", "Synthesizer", "Da Art of Storytellin Pts. 1 and 2", "West Savannah", "Chonky Fire", "Liberation" etc But there are some tracks on here that just kinda interrupt the flow of the album (like "Mamacita", "Slump", "Nathaniel", "SpottieOttieDopalicious"). It's not that they're bad tracks, it's just that they don't really fit this album in my opinion. With this clocking over 70 minutes though, it's pretty easy to forget the fact that it doesn't flow perfectly with so much greatness to be found here. This is a close second to "Atliens" and it's definitely something fans of hip hop should have in their collection. Enjoy the funkiness. ... show more

    • Mind boggling delivery of music.
Anyone who likes hip hop music will like this disc. I think they won a Grammy award for this one. It was one of the best albums to come in 1998. Still play this in the car. Really clean, hard hitting bass, with Andre and Big Boy really bringing it. They deliver some really fast raps in some of the jams. It's mesmerizing. It's hard to believe human beings can deliver that kind of energy. This should be a very expensive CD to buy. One of the best. This is the type of album that tells a story from front to back, from start to finish. Much prophetic language and perfect harmonies. Must have. ... show more
