  • Battery replacement not available, unfinished app, no other methods of connecting.
While this machine does have all the ingredients to make a good device it unfortunately lacks many major things. It has no way of obtaining any of the footage from the motion after it happened. You can't download it. There's no replacement battery available and it does not last long. Which is odd as it's at its base, just an 18650 battery. Commonly available for 3$ at Every "head shop" at the same or greater capacity than the included battery. They went out for their way to make it impossible to replace without buying another whole device, instead of just adding a battery door. You must buy something that's half the price of the device. After speaking to someone from the company they explained that they do not intend on selling batteries individually, which is disheartening.. because the battery lasts at best a year as a single cell low amperage battery. like all other devices with single cell replacable battery. Would make this an almost perfect device if it had a way of replacing the battery for less than half the price of the machine actually getting footage from it, or adding it to a conventional up security system. Or replacing the battery. like at all. (Plus their now out of stock of the bottom half of the unit so if it dies you need to buy a whole new unit.) Disite the problem Being a single battery they could have, again, just been made with a battery door, like other devices that use this exact same battery. Realistically their charging you at least 13x the price of a battery for the battery. You could argue its because other parts might fail but realistically it won't. They designed it to be able to individually replace the battery so long as you have the proprietary cell they have. Because the drive system is extremely simply and almost flawless (it pulls to one side because it's simple and not a stepper motor, but a cheap simple DC motor, and can't steer, only can pivot as the motors have no power modulation. It's on or off.) This significantly impacts the cost of operation. And it's overall usefulness. So to spell things out No battery replacement (unless you pay half the cost of the unit) One year product life (the battery dies before then) No way to integrate into a security system at all. No way to use on anything other than a smart phone like a toy Can only go forward backwards and pivot. Cannot steer. All the downsides of a simple design without the benifits of easy parts access and replacement No way to obtain video footage from motion detection, or download it at all. so if someone steals the appbot riley they steal the footage too. Which umm.... Defeats the purpose. It's sad because I had such high hopes for this.. :( oh well, I'll have to just make something myself ;-) ... show more

  • If it won't connect turn off Cellular Data during the setup then once connected, turn it back on.
Mine arrived with the box seal broken so I assume it was returned. Not sure which version I received. I decided to try it out anyway. The setup was pretty easy and on my iPad without cellular it works fine. When I tried to install it on an iPad with cellular as a second user (see YouTube video about installing for added users) it would not recognize the bot no matter what I tiried. I looked for a solution to no avail but then I saw a comment on the app page about a user who had to disable Cellular Data in iPad/iPhone setup to make the connection, then once connected, to turn the Cellular Data back on. If you have trouble getting it to connect make sure to turn off Cellular Data during the setup. The bot is working fine and with WiFi turned off it works fine through the cloud too. I tested the upright feature when flipped over and it works great unless you are up against a wall. It will back a bit and then jerk forward righting itself which is pretty darn cool. I don't think it can right itself if on it's side. The video quality is fairly good. Two way sound is fair quality. The bot will easily handle transitions from carpet to floor and over short transitions such as a tile border. The auto dock feature is cool and works great as long as you navigate close to the base station. I would give it 5 stars but the connection issue with Cellular Data almost stumped me when connecting it as a second user. Folks unfamiliar with technology may have trouble getting it to connect. I think it would have a far higher rating except for a couple of hangups which frustrate the less technically inclined users. I stationed ours in the corner behind a lamp base so our Roomba won't knock it over. Once I got it connected I can see it will be a great device to watch over our house while we are away. Time will tell and I may post an update later. ... show more

  • Almost perfect, yet almost has a dealbreaker.
Very few people realize this isn't necessarily a toy. Just one of these bad boys work as an indoors remote monitoring tool for an entire home. The key is the charging cradle. Others fall short of not having this so you're stuck with playing with it when you're at our home. The only real problem with this one is the battery - which has a lifespan of about a year. That's a dealbreaker if you're without soldering skills, it makes this thing a disposable high priced item. As far as I've learned, the manufacturer refuses to address this problem, and one can only assume why. A secondary problem this thing has is that it's not compatible with PC. Just android or iOS. But I think it's fair to say it's not a dealbreaker. Believe me, I've googled alternatives for this device and have found none. Everything out there falls short in one way or another - whether it's size combined with its ability to cruise multiple "indoor terrain" scenarios + ability to recover from tip overs, this thing has no competition. It's mind boggling that something as simple as a remote charging station goes over the head of otherwise genius engineers developing similar technology. ... show more
