  • Perfectly fine calipers.
The media could not be loaded. I noticed this cool looking caliper had some pretty bad reviews... And some pretty good reviews. I decided to try it out and I think I got a pretty good deal. This thing arrived today, April 22, 2021. I'm not a machinist or anything like that so I tried to make a video to help y'all out. I think the bad reviews were just duds, or maybe even use error, because mine seems to be very nice for 36 bucks. I don't know anything about dial calipers but my old digital ones were acting up and I got sick of having to zero it out before every measurement. I just didn't trust it enough not to. And so I got this and I think it's great. It's mechanical so the measurement can't possibly be off. Plus it just feels cooler. I did loosen the two set screws on top to loosen the slide up a bit. It wasn't too tight but I like it better looser. I didn't notice any difference in the function. If I introduced a little slop I can't tell and don't really care. It's more than accurate enough. As you can see in the video it lines up at zero very reliably. I measured a 16mm Miutoyo gauge block, the 2 inch side of a 123 block, and the side of a mini anvil thing. It can be hard to hold calipers perfectly. The slightest angle or twist can throw them off. And the phone in my face didn't help but I think I did it good enough for you to see it's accurate. The jaws are perfectly flat and parallel. If I didn't know there were gears on the inside I would never guess. Can't feel or hear them. I bet the gears are pretty complex too. What else... The thumb wheel is very smooth. Cons: The lens is plastic. I'm not sure how to take it apart. I'll have to watch a YouTube video. All in all I'm pretty happy. I'm sure a professional should skip this one and pay 2 or 3 hundred but for me it's so cool to have such a cool looking and precise tool. I say these are way better than digitals. No fuss no hassle, just measure, easy as a ruler. I'll be sure to update if anything happens. Thanks. Update: I've been playing with it a lot and have gotten comfortable with it. I took the battery out of my digital and stored it away. I compared them to the digital a lot measuring feeler gauges and various objects. It can measure one thousandth of an inch accurately. It measures cigarette cellophane at one thousandth. And held up the light, when open to .001 or even .0005 you can see rainbow colors come through and the slit is perfectly parallel. It's very well machined. I watched YouTube videos how to disassemble and you simply pop the top bezel off. Then remove the hands and face and there are screws. I didn't go past popping the bezel off. There's a beveled white ring in there to hold the face down. It was just tight enough to be secure but not hard to remove. One of the videos was a Miutoyo and even it had a plastic lens so I guess that's normal! Shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement if it ever broke. The depth measurement seems to be accurate. Long review but I think it's worth it because having calipers this nice for $36 is just awesome. I take care of it like it cost $200. Common sense tells you that a Miutoyo or starett would be nicer but to be perfectly honest idk how they could be. I'm sure the steel is polished better but other than that? Idk... Maybe they look and feel smoother, but it's obvious that modern manufacturing has gotten to a point where high quality accurate precise dial calipers are accessible to anyone. Pretty impressive. So I recommend giving these a try before you invest hundreds of dollars in big name brands with big reputations. Thanks a lot. Update: lot of likes on this review. Purchase in April 2021, now June 2024. Happy to report they're still working good! I try to keep them indoors and use cheaper ones for stuff like woodworking but I did get sawdust all over these a couple times and just blew it all out. Good to go! ... show more

  • Metric and SAE is an obvious win for hobbiest
I'm just using this for hobby work and it's my third set of stainless steel calipers. The first one I got is digital which is awesome when the battery isn't dead, and the battery is always dead. The second one I bought is a dial indicator, but only SAE measurements (not sure what I was thinking there, other than "at least the battery won't be dead!"). Both of those agreed with each other on their measurements and worked fine, but I had a need for metric, and didn't have a new battery for the digital one so rather than buying more batteries, I realized somebody probably made a dial caliper with dual readings. This set of calipers feels solid and well built like my other two, has a good case with foam insert rather than just all hard plastic, and for my totally unscientific checks on accuracy, it's consistent with my other dial calipers, small metric bolts, pin spacing on an arduino that's on my desk, and some gapping blades I recently bought. Perfectly acceptable for my needs. The thing that solidified a 5 star rating was one additional thing that's included - clear instructions, which also include a bit of information I never knew about my calipers - I can do step measurements. Use the flat outer edge of the caliper to the small stepped edge on the slider. Always a pain to do and it's been right there all along. If I was Dorothy, these would be my red slippers. If it was a snake, it would have bit me, and then I could have measured the width of its fangs! If I had any more cliche's, I'd put them here! In short, these solid, accurate, and the battery will never die on them and well worth the price. ... show more

  • Very Accurate NO BATTERIES - EASY to use. SAE and METRIC measurements
I'm thrilled. I design things for 3d printing, a lot of them things like battery covers and assorted missing or broken parts. This of course makes my wife thrilled with the 3d printer when I can create a replacement part for her dishwasher (in PETG not PLA), that was 45$+shipping and a 45 day wait. I use my calipers A LOT. I've been through 2 of the battery powered ones in the last year. The batteries have to be replaced very often and they're terribly sensitive to humidity and die early because I live in south Louisiana. They're accuracy and repeat-ability left much to be desired as well. SO these are solid stainless - Don't know if the gauge lens is glass or plastic but the calipers themselves are stainless. Its very well made, moves easily and smoothly, and I get the exact same measurement on a part 3x in a row (my cheap Chinese digital did not manage that and their poor accuracy was reflected when I printed first drafts of parts). So I designed a battery cover replacement for my wife's kitchen scale yesterday. The draft part I was going to use to test fit was PERFECT from the measurements. Mind you I'm not a machinist trying to suss out thousandths on a mm, I'm an engineer and hobbyist who is perfectly happy with hundredths. The metric scale is across the top and the SAE scale is across the bottom so you get both. The red dial indicator needle is for metric and the black needle is for the SAE. It comes in a nice a well fit protective hard case with a foam interior to protect it, and you'll never buy batteries again.... That alone is worth the 35$ Now I have a quality tool that I use several times a day, and no more batteries, and no inaccuracies from poor design, poor construction (plastic parts, shoddy fitment), and perfect measurement repeat-ability. I'm super thrilled with this dial caliper. ... show more
