  • Worth the cost.
Style: PowerStep
I recently bought a slightly used 2013 F150 FX4 Super Crew, and it had side rails that appeared to be factory installed. They worked great for getting into the truck, but weren't quite the right size or in the right space to be any help when getting out. I found myself sliding out of the truck, which I knew was bad for the leather seats and would eventually cause them to rip. Plus they just didn't look great on the truck. Enter the AMP Research Power Step - Bottom Line - totally worth it. Install - I installed these mostly by myself. I am pretty handy and mechanically inclined, but this would be easy for even the most basic of shade-tree mechanics, so long as you are comfortable with the electrical side of things. Installing the motor and the idler step was easy and straight forward - make sure you follow the instructions and it'll be a breeze. Wiring everything up was simple as well as AMP provides a wiring harness that is perfect, just put in the time necessary to run everything where it needs to go and keep it looking clean. Connecting the wiring harness into the stock harness requires some minor contortion because the truck's harness isn't easy to access, but that's not AMP's fault. Match the colors for the wires they gave you to the wires in the truck's harness (a nice touch on AMP's part, vs using some other color wiring and providing a chart) using the provided wire taps (which are very nice) and you're good to go. The only part I needed help with, and it proved to be a little difficult, was mounting the actual step rails onto the two levers. You need a second set of hands to hold the rail while you attach the one end, and you will need to use the provided screws to PULL the aluminum blocks into the step - I thought there was a fitment issue but it just required a little elbow grease once I used the screws to catch a few threads on the block. The steps look great, function exactly as designed, and are sturdy. The newer design has a 2 second delay before retracting, LED puddle lights as part of the kit (which is great because I have the tow mirrors so no puddle light there), and comes with the safety feature of automatically killing power should something get stuck between the step and the body. And best of all - the come down a little bit lower and a little bit further out than the stock rail, making it completely useful for getting in AND out of the truck. No more sliding down off the seat - I can step out comfortably. My shorter fiance loves the steps for that reason, too. Yes, it's a big cost - but I say it's totally worth it, especially if it saves some ware and tear on my interior! ... show more

  • Great quality, works perfectly, fairly simple to install
Style: PowerStep Plug-N-Play
I'm very familiar with the running boards - was the one option not available for my 2013 King Ranch SCrew and have wanted them for several years. Finally took the plunge and installed these. I have a bad back and it can be a little challenging at time to climb the big step on my stock running boards. Also not fun watching my mother-in-law trying to get in to the truck...The Amp makes a ton of difference with the wider, lower, more even steps. These work great, operate smoothly, and the light is a nice added feature. Parts are high quality, installation was not real challenging, just took some time. Pretty good 9 minute video available on you tube to run you through installation. Referred to it a couple of times to verify the paper instructions. Including removal of old running boards, it took about 3 hours to install, and that was probably 30 more minutes than it should have taken because I tried a couple routes with the wiring before deciding which way to go, and as mentioned by others, getting those screws on right when attaching the board took a little while for the first one, the others went better. The instructions call for a torque wrench, not something i have so I did it by feel and hope it is close. All in all, i saved almost $300 buying thru Amazon and not paying for installation, so am extremely happy with how this turned out. Update 2/3/2021: After ~3 years, I have had ZERO issues with the AMP steps. Still look and work great! ... show more

  • Should have done this sooner!
Style: PowerStep
I had been planning on buying these for my 2010 F150 Lariat for years but never could justify the cost. Now I'm sorry I didn't do it sooner, but the kicker is my wife had hip surgery and could no longer get in the (slightly lifted) truck. These will enable her to easily get in and out now. Installation wasn't bad, removed old running boards and the new clips and brackets use the same mounting holes with no modifications needed. When I got to the wire harness and controller I did find Amp is now using a new model controller with a 9-pin and an 8-pin connector but the wire harness was designed for the old controller with a 9-pin and 2-pin pigtail. I double checked everything and didn't have an adapter in the box so I had to wait for Monday morning to call customer service. The rep was extremely helpful and knew exactly what to do, by the time I arrived home on Tuesday I had the necessary pigtail waiting at the house to complete the install. I couldn't be more pleased with Amp Research products and customer support. After finishing the wiring and mounting the boards to the brackets everything was perfect, no further adjustments needed. A couple of notes: The install instructions don't mention it but YouTube shows the butt connectors are heat shrink as well. Do this to prevent corrosion in the connectors. If you buy the optional trim piece it's much easier to install if you put a thin coat of white lithium grease on the inside of the trim, this makes it slide onto the board fairly easy. My original steps were 18" from the ground and only had about 3.5" of useable surface area to step on. These steps are 13.5" from the ground and the entire 6" of surface area is available to stand on. I'm 240 lbs and the steps are plenty sturdy. ... show more
