  • "McKenna" credibly addresses themes tweens can relate to
My nine-year-old daughter loves the American Girl stories and we have both enjoyed the period films such as the "Kit Kittredge", "Samantha", and "Molly" films. I was initially a bit reluctant to purchase this (since it wasn't offered as a Prime Instant Watch) because it wasn't a period film, but my daughter convinced me it might be a good idea so we went for it. I am glad because there are many positive messages in this film for young girls. McKenna is an aspiring competitive gymnast who is completely devoted to gymnastics, to the detriment of her studies. Since she is failing her reading comprehension class, her teacher suggests a tutor. Initially reluctant to get help, McKenna finally relents but then doesn't seem to like any of her recommended tutors - they are either too intense, lazy, or indifferent and finally settles on Josie, an older teen who is in a wheelchair. Over a period of time, McKenna and Josie form a close friendship and this places a strain on McKenna's relationship with her best friend, another aspiring gymnast who has no clue that McKenna is struggling academically and is being tutored. I felt the drama of tween friendships was well-handled in this film, as was the theme of friendship, peer pressure, parental pressure, and more. The interactions between the various characters was quite naturally done and didn't feel forced or contrived. Some of the characters did seem older than the elementary-aged students they were meant to portray, but overall, the film was well-done. I didn't enjoy the "Saige" film as much as that seemed a bit over the top and exaggerated (it didn't help that the actors were not suited to their roles), but "McKenna" gets a thumbs up from both my daughter and I. ... show more

  • Good movie with positive messages
We're sort of new to the American Girl movies in this household but McKenna seemed like a good movie to start with. Unfortunately for me, McKenna's movie appeared on Netflix streaming after I already paid for the rental on Amazon but such is life. Overall, this movie was cute and centered on McKenna and her gymnastics and school related problems. I imagine these are fairly typical problems for elementary aged children. Like other American Girl movies we've since seen, this has very positive themes. It is probably our favorite so far. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Steve from Beverly Hills 90210 (Ian Ziering) and the My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos as McKenna's parents. I would recommend this movie for any American Girl fans or any school aged children (especially those with an interest in gymnastics). ... show more

  • A Great Movie!
This movie is cute and fun for kids and at the same time it teaches a wonderful lesson on how to have balance in life. And it also teaches good friendship qualities and that it's okay to need help and that our parents and teachers are really there to help us; and though it may seem that they are punishing us they are really doing it because it's what is best for us. I am an adult and i watched this movie and i learned all these things from it. If you want your children to learn good values in a fun and easy way- this is the movie! Besides for all that the music in the movie is so cute and nice and the characters are really good. I personally like watching movies that teach good values and are good examples for my children and this one definitely gets a thumbs up! ... show more

  • Timely movie for young gymnasts
My daughter is a big fan of all things American Girl and is also a gymnast. When this movie was released I knew she would love it. We first rented it through Amazon On Demand and she loved it so much we bought the DVD and recorded it on TV when it aired on ABC Family. She's watched it so many times and she loves doing cartwheels right along with the movie. The books indicate that McKenna is a Level 4 gymnast, but the movie would have you believe the girls are already optionals (Level 7 or better) based on the skills they show in the routines. They probably had the more difficult skills for cinematic value, but it's not accurate. American Girl always puts out high quality content and McKenna Shoots for the Stars is no exception. ... show more

  • Four grade slumps!!!
I bought this for my 8 years old daughter. We changed school in January and the middle of the semester. We watched the movie at you tube for free but when I saw it with her I really want her to have it. She just finished her 2 nd grade and have a lot of trouble in comprehension. She feel very bad even though was reading very well and fast but with a new school that was not enough because of the comprehension. This movie deal with a real problem in our schools today, and I love it because is okto talk about and for my daughter to see that it also happen to other girls, even McKenna... Which is her favorite AG doll. The music is great and has a lovely message of friendship also. I highly recommend this movie!!!!! ... show more
