Description

Paul Schrader, hot off writing the scripts for Martin Scorsese’s immortal classics Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, stepped into the director’s chair for the third time with 1980’s American Gigolo, a gripping tale of intrigue and deception set against the backdrop of sultry late-70s Los Angeles and starring Richard Gere in a breakthrough performance. In a world of wealth and desire, high-end male escort Julian Kay (Gere) offers his love and attention to women in need. • Elegant packaging from Arrow plus Informative Booklet.
Great packaging - Slipcase and a hard box containing the disk and a separate and comprehensive booklet plus double sided fold out original poster and 6 postcard-size art cards. This is a brand new 4k remaster from the camera negative carried out by Arrow Films. It looks like what a late 1970's film should look like. Choice of original mono, stereo and 5.1 audio options. Lauren Hutton looks fabulous. If you are a fan of 1970's cinema and/or of Richard Gere, then you must have this version. Expensive USA import, but worth every cent. ... show more

  • Gere at his sexiest
What can I say not too much because I am sure that this site is PG rated but let me tell you WOW!! This film is what made me fall in love with Richard Gere

  • Armani clothes still look great
This movie was a hit in its day and the actors look great in their Armani clothes that could be worn today to good effect. The plot is a little contrived to give it some interest besides Richard Gere having sex for money. Still worth a second viewing if you saw it back in the 80s.

  • Richard Gere started here....
The low reviews are funny. What did you think you were going to be watching based on the title? Shakespeare? It was everyone's chance to stare at Richard Gere! And then we all fell in love with that crazy Virgo. We are still watching him. What is he how? 72? Still as hot as the day we met him. He is the American Gigolo. ... show more

  • Short of greatness but entertaining
Movie 7 of 1980 and 77 overall in my journey through films of my lifetime. Of all the films of the 70's none were more 70's than this. From the decor to the fashion and even it's conspiratorial plot line. There was even some disco to be seen. I assume these things were still in vogue during pre production and filming so I shouldn't be surprised. I am impressed with the body of work from director Paul Schrader. In particular the way he turns physical intimacy on its head. He makes you ask questions about your own fantasies. Unfortunately his stories seem to be drug down by Hollywood pop plot points. "American Gigolo" suffered from this as much as "Hardcore" did. Honestly I would have liked it more if it had simply investigated the life of the main character. It could have been a deep dive into the life of a male flesh peddler. Some of that is there but not enough. Oh and spoiler... he falls in love AND love saves the day! Sounds cheesy? That's because it is. Too bad really because this could have been special. As it was it was merely entertaining. Pros -Richard Gere is a good lead -interesting characters -never bored me Cons -only lightly brushes deep concepts so we end up short of greatness -drab esthetic, great if you loved the 70's ... show more
