Description
Only a few very wealthy and determined collectors have ever been fortunate enough to acquire the $4 Stella. While the desirability and value of many collectible coins do not begin to appreciate until well after they are no longer minted, the unusual $4 Stellas were popular with collectors even at the time they were made. Extremely low mintages, however, meant there were simply not enough of these charming gold pieces to go around. A unique denomination, never minted before or since, the seeds for the new $4 Gold Piece had been sewn by the 1870's. With the Civil War over and the country itself secure, America began to look beyond its own borders and focus on international trade. People on both sides of the Atlantic lobbied for a worldwide coinage system that would encourage and facilitate trade. Congressional representatives proposed two new international coins, one being a $4 Gold Piece intended to compete globally with coins of similar value, such as the French 20 franc and the Italian 20 lire. The new $4 coin was given the completely new designation of "Stella", the Latin word for star. Chief Mint Engraver Charles Barber's design for the obverse depicts Liberty with long, flowing hair. A large, five- pointed star is framed on the reverse. The Stella was struck only as Proofs in 1879 and 1880 and was never minted on a regular basis. It's a thrill to actually see the fabled Stella design up close and with your own eyes. Unique, beautiful, and exceedingly rare, it is always very much in demand by serious coin enthusiasts yet seldom appears on the coin market except in the sale of a major collection. The coveted and elusive Stella design is now part of your own enviable personal collection in a splendidly crafted tribute.
