I had a hip replacement 11 years ago and was advised by my surgeon not to run anymore. Over the last 6 years I have been wearing the Altra zero drop Impulse (2), Torin 4 & 5 , and Paradigm 6 "running" shoes for casual wear, fitness walking, gym workouts, and Timps for hiking. I generally get an estimated 350-400 miles out of a pair of Altras. Between the 23mm Impulse and (older) 28mm Torin and 30mm Paradigm I find my sweet spot "road shoe" stack height is 28mm for the best combination of cushion, flexibility, and a laterally stable foot platform for good balance on a flat surface and walking across a sloped surface. The Provision is in my sweet spot. In contrast to the neutral Torin, Altra describes the Provision 8 as a "soft stability" shoe. The Provision 8 has a nice wide natural toebox shape but narrows at the arch, and downright grips my heels to provide good comfort along with, and more importantly the lateral balance support I want without feeling overly tight. There is also a pronounced firmness in the lateral (outside) portion of the heel that the Paradigm "stability" shoes no longer have after 9 months (if they ever did). Time will tell but after a few miles of brisk "tire the dog out" fitness walking, I think they work for me. ... show more

    • Loved everything except the arch support, it felt like too much!

After a while it felt like a mushy ball was under the arch of my foot. Unusual for Altra to give me that sensation! Might not bother all but maybe more than other shoes from them might...had to send back.

Ive went all my life unable to fit into tennis shoes and i ran like a penguin because of it. Now instead of embarrassing waddles i stomp with pride and walk in style. Not only did these look fashionable for my simple black t shirt style vibes but it is comfortable as ****. Even my dad tried them on and said he needed them for work. Great looking pair of sneaks. The toe box is wide and luxurious. The shoe gets tight and narrow in the middle. The arch was uncomfortable. I have normal-sized toes and wide-ish feet so maybe if you have big toes and normal-sized feet this is the shoe for you.

First off I am a walker, not a runner. Started buying.Altra shoes, 10 years ago. And besides my crocs, they are the only brand I buy now. About nine months ago, I wasn’t needing a new pair of shoes and the Torren that I just bought before that trashed quickly. I was a bit upset. With the funky economy, I thought I would try to search for the shoes I wanted in the under $100 range and the provision.6 popped up. It was the best change that I have made in a shoe. Now I use lone Peak, I have Escalante‘s, I have TIMP, and four or five other models, but I can’t name off the top of my head. a lot of those I use for walking around shoes, but the provision I use for exercise! Like I said above the provisions changed how my walk feels and how my foot sat in the shoe. The wear on the souls came a lot slower and a lot more uniform. It dictate about a week of steady walking for my feet to adjust to the new way, but Man alive do they feel good! So let’s move on the provision 8. you’re always apprehensive after getting a good pair of shoes that the next model may have too many changes. I skipped.7 because I didn’t need a new shoe yet. But whenever I started looking at new ones, I listen to reviews on the seventh and the eighth. I’m glad I waited. I don’t think the stack height on these shoes is any taller than they were on the six, but it feels more cushion, but still has the same control. It took no time for my feet and shins to adjust and not being in pain after walking in the new ones. These shoes are absolutely awesome. It’s hard for me to not use them as my just walking around shoes right now. As usually my exercise shoes stay for exercise until they are replaced from being worn down. They feel so good. I want to wear them all the time! I know I kind of ramble and there may be some grammatical errors. Please forgive me. I am blind and speech to text , isn’t that great after all these years! Hopefully this review helps somebody and I do need to say that I am a narrow hill, wide tow box, flat footed, man, and Altra is the only shoe I will even try to walk in. Thank y’all ... show more
