  • Okay
This is definitely a beginners instrument. The sound is decent, but the tuners are rather fiddly (ha!) and come loose fairly easily. I have come across far worse instruments at this price range, but also much better ones. The included music stand it nice, and it is nice that it has a tuner - but the tuner came without a battery. ... show more

  • Fantastic beginners violin kit
I highly recommend this kit for beginners and new students. I'll give you the run-down of the instrument itself as well as the kit as a whole. This kit has ALMOST everything you need to start your violin/fiddle playing journey short of a battery for the tuner (CR2032 lithium battery is NOT included) and one useful item. For reference, I'm an experienced violin player who has played both very nice and very poor "beginners" violins, and I got this kit as a spare for myself and as a teaching/companion instrument. THE INSTRUMENT: The violin itself is above average but basic, and it looks and feels beautiful to the beginner's eye. It can produce a lovely, solid, luscious sound that reflects a solid and precise construction. Unlike some models in this price range, the bridge and nut are exactly the correct measurements--I have too much experience with cheap models where one or both of these is too large and makes playing painful or impossible, so this violin scores major points for its precisely fitted and trimmed parts. The string pegs take a bit of elbow grease and several re-tunings before they stay in place, but after a day or so, I was able to get them tight enough that they don't slip out of tune without the use of waxes or mallets. However, if you have problems with them, there are online tutorials and even products to help the pegs gain tension/traction. The reason I gave 4 out of 5 stars for this product as a whole is that the violin has cosmetic deficiencies that make it look cheap close-up, such as an uneven finish on the chin rest (which appears as scratches in the photo) and obvious flaws, chinks, and imperfect joints in the wood veneer finish. The instrument arrives already strung, all you have to do is to tighten the strings and make sure the bridge is in the correct position. The kit includes a brief but comprehensive set-up guide for all of the parts, from the bridge and strings to the bow, chin rest, and tuner. SIZE: Don't confuse "beginner" violin with "child" or "youth" violin. This instrument is full-sized (4/4) and is suited for teenagers and adults. Younger learners should choose a size based on their height and arm measurements (3/4, 1/2, etc.). I'm impressed with the quality of the other components in this kit, so here's what else is included: The MUSIC STAND and the VIOLIN STAND alone make this kit a super great bargain! Both are of higher quality than most stands you'll find. The music stand has its own carrying case, it has 2 telescopic sections that reach adult standing height, it's very sturdy but lightweight, and I love the spring-loaded page holders that are actually wide enough to accommodate a notebook. It's such an upgrade to what I'm used to. Most of my floor/table-top instrument stands are just made of cardboard, so this collapsible, padded violin stand puts them all to shame! It can accommodate the violin with the chin rest still attached so you don't have to adjust/replace it between sessions. OTHER PARTS: THE BOW is not perfect, but it works fine--the one I received has a slightly twisted warp that won't affect general usage. THE CASE is very nice student quality, with backpack straps, a handle, and a cargo pocket (fits a lesson booklet and chin rest) on the outside, a great quality zipper, and the inside has secure fittings and a compartment for small stuff like the BOW ROSIN, a brightly colored CLEANING CLOTH, and SPARE STRINGS. The thumb-sized TUNER can be clipped on the scroll for fast tuning, and it can be used also for other stringed instruments. It's just a bummer that the battery wasn't included for faster set-up. This is my first time trying to use the FINGERBOARD STICKER. I'm used to "sticky" stickers to mark certain places on the fingerboard and I think I prefer them overall, but I can see how this full-coverage cling-film sticker would be valuable to a beginner. I like that it's very accurate if placed right and is removable, but since it's just held in place via static cling, it sometimes slides and bunches up, so I'd recommend just taping it down. WHAT'S MISSING? If you're a beginner or buying for a beginner, I recommend also getting a rubber MUTE, which this kit does not include. It's a very simple and cheap addition, but trust me, it can save your or your family members' ears/nerves (and maybe your relationship, too, LOL) as well as help build confidence at the early learning stages. ... show more
