Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Taking place nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin’s ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LOS ANGELES TIMES AND BUZZFEED These never-before-collected adventures recount an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living consciousness. Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne, there was Dunk and Egg. A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet. Praise for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms “Readers who already love Martin and his ability to bring visceral human drama out of any story will be thrilled to find this trilogy brought together and injected with extra life.”—Booklist “The real reason to check out this collection is that it’s simply great storytelling. Martin crafts a living, breathing world in a way few authors can. . . . [Gianni’s illustrations] really bring the events of the novellas to life in beautiful fashion.”—Tech Times “Stirring . . . As Tolkien has his Silmarillion, so [George R. R.] Martin has this trilogy of foundational tales. They succeed on their own, but in addition, they succeed in making fans want more.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Pure fantasy adventure, with two of the most likable protagonists George R. R. Martin has ever penned.”—Bustle “A must-read for Martin’s legion of fans . . . a rousing prelude to [his] bestselling Song of Ice and Fire saga . . . rich in human drama and the colorful worldbuilding that distinguishes other books in the series.”—Publishers Weekly Read more

  • Very Captivating and great Character Development
The media could not be loaded. This book particularly I found very captivating and loved the character development. It was an easy read and I think it was a great length. It wasn't took short but didn't drag out. I feel that it fills in some holes with events from the past to better explain the back story. The illustrations are gorgeous and love the attention to details. Very well written and excellent read! ... show more

  • On the surface these are good old fashioned fantasy tales
The stories of "A Knight of the Seven Kingdom" are a treat to read, treating Westeros with much more levity than the A Song of Ice and Fire series does. On the surface these are good old fashioned fantasy tales. Martin, however, shows his skill as a writer by writing an underlying current of tension--we are in the middle of the Blackfyre rebellions, and each new meeting begs the question--which side did you fight for, the red dragon or the black? As the supporters of the "pretender" have been pardoned, the question doesn't have nearly the gravity as the question "Who did you fight for, lions or wolves?" in ASOIF, but the legacy of the first Blackfyre Rebellion sways the stories and actions of characters that weren't even involved, much the way that Robert's rebellion is a backdrop for ASOIF. A couple of reviewers have mentioned that this is a good introduction to the world of Westeros, but I (lightly) disagree. After reading ASOIF up through A Dance with Dragons, to read A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms brings greater depth to the events and characters that are merely mentioned in the stories. To suddenly be part of a world where Targaryens reign, mostly peaceful, to read about Aegon the Unlikely, and Aemon Targaryen as a youth--of Bloodraven, who has a thousand eyes and one--lends significance to things in ASOIF that I think wouldn't be felt the same way if A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is read first. But it's good whichever way it's read ... show more

  • Intriguing story set in the past, fills in some of the back story of the Game of Thrones world.
A knight of the Seven Kingdoms the adventures of Dunk and Egg is a wonderful start to a new story set in the Game of Thrones world 100 years before the events in GOT. While reading just a few chapters into this book I realized why we like George RR Martin’s world so much. It is filled with deep rich characters that are full of pride and have realistic flaws. While I would much rather George finish the original saga before writing off shoot stories based in the same world. It is hard to deny that he writes compelling stories. Since we all know who Egg ends up becoming we are fascinated to see how his story plays out. The character development is excellent as are the wonderful drawing illustrations that accompany the reading. The drawings are superb and paint a wonderful picture of what is going on in the text. They reminded me of the illustrations that accompany Robert E Howards Conan stories which are outstanding visuals that go along with the reading. One thing that struck me while reading the stories is the possibility of Dunk ending up becoming the father of Gregore Clegane and Sandor Clegane since he is almost a giant of a man himself. Maybe they end up becoming his bastard children. George once again made this story so open ended that of course a sequel will follow, the question will be how soon? The book does move along quiet slowly at times where you wish the action would speed up a bit. Dunk is a likable character more streetwise whereas Egg is the intellect of the too. The author gives off the idea that eventually Dunk will end up a kings guard knight, but it seems years away from where Dunk’s life is at currently hence another reason for a sequel for the story. Overall GOT fans should be quiet pleased with the story. The writing and character development is excellent although I thought of Dorne in my mind as a much more of a desert and desolate place than what was described in the story. They seem to be barely in the country and more on the border in my opinion. It was nice to see Dunk prove his valor even if he seems to stubble into things. I would rate this a 4 ½ star story. I found it interesting with great drawings to accompany the text. I kept wanting to read even more to find out what happens next. I can’t wait for further adventures meeting the Starks and heading to the Wall. ... show more
